  1. I had been to Karate Depot, I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't missing something somewhere. As far as getting cheaper equipment, I agree. My old gear lasted about six months. Although, our sparring matches do get a bit "spirited"
  2. Anyone? Need full setup. Thanks for any help you can give.
  3. Go to whichever one of the schools offer the most sparring. Sparring is invaluable in learning how to fight. Katas are a waste of time when you are cornered in a dark alley... Although they are useful in learning how to perform a certain move, block, or punch. Try both since you have the rest of your life to do them. Good luck and train hard.
  4. Excellent article. Our dojo is based on Christianity as well. We have scripture all over our walls. I think that this is a good thing because MA has gotten a sort of bad vibe over the years. I agree 100% with the article. Meditation is repeated over and over in the Bible as a tool to worship God and to strengthen your spirit and daily walk. A bow is no different than a hand shake. People in Japan bow to each other everyday. Does that mean that they are all going to hell? Seriously, God knows your heart.
  5. Sorry for the late reply but college is killing me. I live in Collinsville VA. Our instructor pays a lot of attention to hand maneuvers and finger locks. He is big on submission without doing a lot of physical damage. He loves to talk about the three types of hinges and how to manipulate them. Then again, I think that he just loves to talk
  6. Hey Telsun, I thought that I was the only one who did Goju-Ryu karate. I am glad to see that someone else does the same style. My sensei teaches jujitsu to help compliment Goju-Ryu and it makes a difference.
  7. I was 24 when I started too. You'll be fine. One of our exercise leaders is almost 70 Trust me, she is not the one you want to be leading exercise that day. Age is more a state of mind. I hope that she never makes sensei though...

    First Class

I got to go to my first class today. I found out that the style Karate is Goju Ryu. My first class went fairly well except for the flexibility part. Come to find out, weight lifting does nothing for flexibility (imagine it). This proves to be more painful than I had thought. Other than that, it was good to go and I enjoyed it. They also mix Jujitsu and some other form of self defense that they teach the Isreali Police??? I dont know the name, but other than that what do you guys think of Goju Ryu?
  9. You may want to try and go for quantity. I started out killing myself to get out 200 every other day. Then everyday, and finally 300 the day I work out and 350 the day that I don't. Doing pushups everyday is not a great idea unless you have trained your body to do so, or just dont have a lot of time to get in shape. Also try using chairs, weights, or one handed pushups if you are short on time. There is something to be said for having three things- BenGay (Maximum Strenght), Aspirin, and a massager. Dont forget to stretch out every few sets!
  10. You may want to consider a Crossbow/Bowflex. I bought a Crossbow and have had decent results with it, it works out about as much as the Bowflex and is much cheaper. There is no substitue for pushups and freeweights though.
  11. I forgot to ask about that What are the differences? Does one just cover blocking and striking more than the other or something? I have a feeling that I am going to have to get a lot bigger and stronger though
  12. I think that Jet Li would be a closer match for Jackie Chan than Bruce Lee. Anyone?
  13. Thanks a lot guys, I think that I have found my place. I talked to an instructor and watched a few classes. He showed me a lot of his credentials and everything looks good. He is a Christian which is a plus for me and has a really flexible schedule for his students (which helps out for college). The other places acted very remiss, almost bored with teaching someone??? This instructor was the only one that acted like they wanted me to be there. I am kind of disappointed with their reactions, karate it is then...
  14. Ok guys here is the problem. There are only two choices that I seem to have where I live. TKD or Karate. I am 24 and am 6'4" and weigh 205lbs, I work out on my Bowflex and do 250 pushups everyday. I am fairly strong/cut and was wondering what anyone suggests? I am quick with my punches but a little slower with kicks since I am out of practice using them. I took Karate when I was 15 and did ok but now I am much stronger and faster now than I was then. What would suit my body type?
