  1. Again, Henry, I'm not trying to prove you wrong or kick your ass in anyway... Just a add on to wat you have said... To shave off the hair is to get rid of human's desires and attachments. Some book I read in Lotus Sect shave all hairs that can be found on their body and looks like a featherless chicken, pure white skin...
  2. Well, I dun believe Jerry or me are offense in anyway, right Jerry? For me, I'm just trying to post what I knew. I might be wrong, yar While I was training under Nghor Chor, we use to punch a pail of water without touching the surface. Shifu says, do it till the water splash. 3 years, I never able to make it work for me, only water ripple was created and shifu says it is the "Air" that moves the water while I was punching down and not the element of "Chi"
  3. this might not be "chi kung", it is just the ability to move the air around the environment to help blow out the candle. There is a art of Shaolin Skill, "Single Gold Finger". The skill after mastering can put out the "Old Candle Technique" by just pointing the candle without even punching or moving any part of your body.
  4. Blind-fold sets start off with normal eye to eye & hand to hand contact. Get the things ready (this is the most simple form of practise) 1) both (you & your partner) sits within a striking distance 2) right hand inter-cross on the back wrist with the left palm touching on his right elbow 3) both can start off by trying to push the other off their original sitting position This practise concentrate on listerning to the opponents movements cause both your hand are in contact. In chinese wushu terms "Ting Jing". If you practise everyday for 2 hours, within a year, you can go for the blindfold with the same routine.
  5. Spread the word (no offense thro), unless you want to improve on your contemp wushu forms, China might be a good place to futher improve as they are always improving on their contemp art. If you are looking for authentic art, search around your region, you might find 1 shifu staying just next to you
  6. I pick up TKD when young and that was school sport. When I was introduce to wushu, I was drug. Wushu had been my motivation in life beside my family and friends... Given a choice to reselect, I wish to turn back the clock and start wushu training from 5 yrs old. For shoes, I prefer flat rubber sole canvas, that what I recommend to all my trainee. Feiyue is a popular brand in Singapore mainly due to our local National Wushu Team member also wearing them. I wouldn't recommend adidas or otomix due to the price and the unstablity of the narrow sole. Another althernative will be those worn by volley ball players.
  7. Leave MMA aside, just wushu itself already has many complication. A complusory routine is much more easy to judge as most judges had gone thru the course and we mark by spoting mistakes. When it comes to Traditional Forms, OMG... for southern art there are Hung Mok Choy Lee Lau. Each family has their unique pattern. Although as judges, for trad routines we judge by 4 cat: Force & Power, Correct Posture, Coordination, Spirit. But not all judges are well verse in northern & southern art, especially the newer batch, which mainly gone thru the contemp wushu training... So, as much as the event planner wish to make things look fairer, individual participants should understand that fairness in not in the dictionary of subjective performance competition. Do not be blind by points. Winning yourselve is more important
  8. By the word "chi" itself means the air that you breath. To improve your Chi means to able to breath better, simple? "How about those Chi Kung?", you might ask. Chi Kung is routine sets that you practise to further enhance (not improve) and accumulate your air within your body. There are 2 basic Chi Kung, inner and outer. Lets talk about outer as it is much more easier to "say". Outer Chi Kung or Hard Chi Kung is a practise to harden your body (head, hands, body, legs, fingers). More indepth will be practise of our blood flow, vein reactions, chinese medicines... Inner Chi Kung or Soft Chi Kung is the practise of building and withholding (or trapping) air in our body to prolong our daily activities. "Chi" can be use for healing purpose. A good chi kung master can use his chi to heal another patient but that require to giveup his chi to the patient. Meditation has the effect of Chi practise but not the focus point. Chi Kung must be impart and not self-train...
  9. Yi Chin is a set of Qi Gong practise...
  10. Do not be fool by the information or research on internet or video clips, even handout brouchers. If you go train in China without recommendation, you will be "chop chop" off your wallet. Most schools, associations, accademy in mainland China now are focusing on contemp wushu. Not say you can't find any good master to teach your real wushu, but why would they bother to entertain you in the first place? Tell you a ironical issue, as chinese, we wanna learn the art of Hung Gar, we don't go china or hong kong, we go poland or germany... hahaha... thats where the real master have migrated to...
  11. In asia country, you wouldn't be able to see this sort of macdojo around becouse before you can really "fly" with your type of dojo, member of other clans or association would have visited you and scout around. If yours truly is macdojo, down you go... Macdojo is active in country out of asian region, why, free country, free speach, free.... Ignorance is the cause and education is the only medicine.
  12. What happen when the shifu is good but the trainee is lousy? Will the trainee turn the table and question the shifu inability of coaching?
  13. The art of Shaolin comprises of 72 skills and 108 art. Art are routines or form practise, where skills are the different type of conditioning of body. Some example are: Iron Palm, Golden Finger, Metal Shirt Body... There is one style of taichi from the scripts of Zen or Boddhirama, namely Zen Style Taichi. Zen Style Taichi focus on powerful waves motion to defend and attack. Similar to white water rafting
  14. The gesture of respect is to put your left palm over right fist at a level of your chest. The actual meaning is "Chor Qing Lung, Yeow Pak Fu" - Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger. Also can be phrase as: "Mm Ho Say Hoi Kit Heng Dai" - Five River, Four Seas, all are brothers. The above saying are due to the legend and cutlural of Chinese. The green dragon & white tigher is due to spiritual beliefs and the rivers & seas are the landscape of ancient China. The are many other forms of respect, some have hidden meaning due to the Ching Dynasty where the Ming trying to overthrow the Ching. Alot of secret socitey are form and to hid from the Ching army, hand sign ang other posture are form. Some art like Wing Chun also have the hidden agenda of "Fun Ching Fok Ming" - overthrow the Ching Dynasty and rebuilt the Ming Dynasty...
  15. What is the essence of wushu (I use the term wushu to represent all CMA including taiji and others...)? Wushu is not only about how to fight, it teaches moral & ethical values, it is a Way of life, it builts a better community and promotes friendship. I don't deny that wushu was created with the element of fighting spirit, and in the past, there could be times of unrest and turmoil, but do you learn wushu now because you want to fight with others? There are people who interact in Martial Arts thru application. Why? Is it to fight? Is it for self-defence? Given the fact that they have acquired the ability to use their skills, have they ever encountered any life-threatening situation? If no why do they still carry on their sunday activities? I could only make a guess that it is their passion for Martial arts thru interaction in application of fighting skills. Also there are people who keep learning many arts and there are more arts he wishes to learn. I believe he loves different forms and types of MA and possibly of the knowledge he gained from them. Most contemp wushu practisoner learn wushu because of the beauty of the art, for competition sake, to learn the techniques, to know more friends, for the sporting spirit...etc No Master will teach you wushu and tell you to go and fight. Most want u to turn out a better stronger person. There is a purpose why you want to learn wushu, but I strongly believe that many don't learn wushu to fight others. Reflect on yourselves, when you 1st got to know abt Wushu and wanted to learn, what was your idea of Wushu? What was ur mental image of Wushu and how did you categorize it? Was it one of a good healthy image? A noble art with noble practisioners? In the nutshell, I would say, interaction with the MA (be it different ways of interaction) is the key factor why people pick up Wushu. Think and you will be amaze by your own thoughts...I know I did.
  16. San Soo = Shan Shou??? If Shan Shou, dan will be something like Chinese Kickboxing with Mogolian Wrestling
  17. I've search thru the board and found alot of practisioner will compare this art against that art, or how good this art can be... My personel views will be: There ain't no Better Martial Arts, There is always a Better Fighter. July 2002, a gp of Wingchun exponent was invited to Thailand for a friendly match. The art of Muaythai won the match. Apr 2001, Mauythai practisioner was invited to China to exhange with San Shou fighter. The winner: San Shou. In the nutshell, there are no superior art over any other, but the practisioner will have to work hard to overcome other arts, yar
  18. You have already created a style of your own. Most southern art like Wing Chun, Hung Gar or Choy Lee Fat will have most of the techniques you are looking at.
  19. The 5 Big Family (Gar) of southern art: Hung, Mok, Choy, Lee, Lau. There are another 13 famous southern art too... most can be found in chinese websites.
  20. "Compulsory" routines are international standard routines that was formed by the Chinese to promote wushu to the world. The routines includes: Changquan, Daoshu, Qiangshu, Jianshu, Gunshu, Nanquan, Nandao, Nangun, Taiji. Compulsory routines are usually use for international wushu comp as a standard for all country to compete in. But this will be changing as China is making wave into Qlympic 2008. There will be no moer standard routines but standard movements. You have to chorograph your own routine with the sets of standard movements IWUF had state in their book. IWUF - International Wushu Federation (base in China) is the governing body for all local wushu feds.
  21. I do mainly on Hung Gar. Along the course, I pick up on Nghor Chor, Pak Kua, Hsing-I, Zen Style Taichi and Southern Shaolin For coaching sake, learn the contemp wushu and the new compulsory routines.
  22. Wushu competitions in Singapore have both category, Trad and Complusory. For international wushu comp, you have no choice but to follow the IWUF rules and regulations. But I believe most local comp will have a trad event for those practising trad art, yar
