  1. I think it is wrong to just fight back an attacker. However, if they are in your bedroom or decided to get close to the subject, chances are that they may not be armed. These stories to me just show that there are reasons not simply to go around assaulting women these days unless you DO have a gun!
  2. Be respectful of other people and other styles. I hate it when people are so negitve about each other.
  3. Seattle is not a small town. Perhaps you could find something good.
  4. I think he has a really good idea on the car. But yet, I think martial arts instruction is so competitive anyway that in a town like San Jose there would be many options availible.
  5. Any dojo should be investigated to see if it is legit or not. There should be some kind of TKD federation registry. Also, if there are investigations of cult-like behavior and rumors it is not truely a school, one should not train there all the time and have interest in other schools as well. You should not make a valid decision before both being experienced with her modus opperandi and other resources.
  6. Go ahead! So much the better if you can master both forms.
  7. Keep going. Trying different forms of a disipline might help you understand everything else, and perhaps assistance on any primary form.
  8. What kind of test is this? i think I agree with everyone else here by saying that it is absolutely wrong and pointless to see two kids not yet 11 having such a serious role. I will not be serprised if the sanctioning body would put serious penalties on the organizing comittee for this. If it was a school, I would ask for their affiliation certificate to be revoked!

    On failing

In life, as in karate, missing a belt makes no long term difference. The problem that I see in people these days is that once you are "out" of a test or other work medium they take it as failure. It is not. You should be prepared to take the test enough times for you to make it. Tiger Wood's father just died at 74 so I guess most people have plenty of time to make whatever next rank they want to, no?
  10. I think that schools should teach both ways in order to allow students to train hard in whatever disipline they are interested. However, as far as training for tournaments and such, those given students should have a firm head as to what they are training for. I agree with the comment "points fighters tend to stick to their ways", and I think there is a good arguement there to control the styles that a particular student does as to not embarrass the school when they try an illegal or an unorthodox tatic that is not appropriate for a given tournament.
  11. I am sorry for the confusion my friend. I just can not figure out how some of these names are created and where they came from. Please understand my apologies and fustration. Thank you.
  12. I stand corrected. I would take him or her up of course, but then, my cowardice and geographical reasons prevent me from it. Rock on.
  13. I think it is appropriate to recreate "heritage sports", especially if they are genuine percursers to modern national sports. I think it is appropriate for TKD sports universities to consider a traditional base such as what you are talking about before actively teaching TKD. Not knowing how serious TKD sparring matches are like in Soul and the other cities, I can not say what level of consideration one should have to doing as much training as possible before being ready. However, knowing your reaction to one of our American athletes, I would not challenge a Soul resident to traditional TKD without at least considering that such percurser sports are at least on your history books. Martin
  14. You should continue training for as long as you can. You can never leave something you truely love and live for. As for avoiding situaitons, it is best to leave self control in the head and be able to judge when to counterattack/defend yourself. Do not make martial arts success become a barrier to making it look like you are a normal person.
  15. I think the responder had a good idea. I think it is wrong simply to have an electronic scorer on the chest of a traditional TKD tournament. Reminds me of the situation at the 88 Olympics where one gold medal was decided simply as a matter of "home country" 4-1 gratitude (instead of obviously a 5-0 against scorecard). My suggestion is to use the traditional boxing round 10 point system. However, I do not think that will be well recieved.
  16. I think it is a valid arguement to create standards of attainment of all belt grades. Having something like a mental disorder on my own, the hardest thing on my mind is to prove that it is a simple situational assessment problem and not say a general condemnation of my ability to size up something like estabishing the proper proceedure to deal with a common problem that often happens. I would suggest a grading system that shows that a person is able to handle each skill level. If someone is damaged before a serious test, the person should be able to reschedule. If you have a more perminant disability, one should consider both alternative tests and the possibility that you can not get past a certain level of skill due to your problem. This is a difficult question for me to discuss.
  17. I think that Power has a good point. There is a genuine system of using sparring as a means of testing one's skill in controlled siutations. However, I suscribe to the idea where one should have as many appropriate means to grab potential partners (such as Curie asking if you plan to visit a certain town or area). Lacking of course a system where this sort of action is regulated, I am at a loss to suggest how to go about this without looking like a fool or a "loser". Martin
  18. The dojo/training class should have strict bully rules. Any report, with witnesses, of students hassling other students or outsiders pressuring students should be dealt with promptly. I would suggest a mild first penalty for insiders in trouble such as missing a few key classes. A potential reward situation should also be considered at the same time. Continued acts of improper conduct should be directed to the master in charge and penalties including expulsion can be continued as the problem escalates. Martin
  19. I think it is very funny to see someone using this post as a means to find sparring partners. MC has a point though. Anyway, I think this is crazy.
  20. Sounds interesting, a tournament where both submissions and knockouts were allowed. Well, I would like to know what you mean by fighting at "half power". I can not visualize it. Thanks.
  21. Just curious, Was your sparring matches knockout/submission only? How young were the students involved in those matches? Martin
  22. Nice website. Perhaps unfortunately our next thread topic would be the age minimum of your sparring matches. Nice site.
  23. I agree, I think inviting bullies into the karate class might show some personal respect to what they need and of course show them resp ect to others. Good idea.
