  1. LOL, those guys were ridiculous.
  2. It's not performed explosively though. But yeah, the palwe forms gets better and better. I don't like the first ones. We aim for explosiveness in many of our forms in my school.
  3. You know, I think I knew that. Today hasn't been my finest of days.
  4. Palgwe forms are fairly linear and explosive. The first few forms are kinda bland, but once you hit Saa Jang, the forms are much more interesting to watch. You'll probably see some similarities to Shotokan, too.
  5. Once enough time has elapsed, would it be appropriate to ask how you all felt about episode 7?
  6. The wife and I finished it in 3 sittings... We would have finished it in 2, but some friends wanted to have dinner that night and we had to wait on the last episode.
  7. Has anyone seen the new Jackie Chan movie The Foreigner? I saw it with the wife and a friend this past weekend, and I highly recommend it. It's really nice to see Jackie Chan in a serious role. Don't go in expecting lots of action, though. The movie's mostly a drama with some action scenes!
  8. Protective gear certainly helps, and if I were to go all-out full-contact, then yeah, I'd prefer to wear that gear. That being said, protective gear only helps to reduce the risk.
  9. I think I better-understand your original post, now. Some martial artists claim that they should never teach everything to the student (some old-world idea about a student betraying the instructor nonsense.) To me, I feel that knowledge should be passed on, and should never die with one who held it before.
  10. My kicks have been improving! I am definitely working more on technique than height at the moment. Ultimately, getting my foot off the ground was (and still is) the big challenge.
  11. With all the talk about CTEs in the media lately, I don't know why anyone would want to go full contact with boxing, or any other sport. There's tremendous risk with getting repeatedly knocked in the head.
  12. Sometimes folks get carried away in my TKD class with explanations or demonstrations. Example: We learn a basic wrist release. Practice it twice... Then the black belt who's working with us spends 10 minutes showing off all techniques that could come from what we learned. That's 10 minutes of class time that I won't get back, and it was pretty much wasted, as I retained very little of what was said, and did not get to practice the basic thing I was taught. As I've mentioned before, I teach math at a community college for a living. I was hired to teach the lower level classes (pre algebra, basic algebra, etc.) Could you imagine if I went "Full Knowledge" on students who were learning fractions? Give them a taste of some calculus? Or how about a treatment of smooth manifolds in R^n? Even better... Ramble on about why a closed convex hull of a set in a topological vector space is important. I think I'd lose them pretty quick. I'd love to talk about it, as I'm starting to forget it all! But alas, I can't.
  13. While I didn't tear the muscle (much, that I know of...), I did have a lot of issues with my hips in those areas (iliacus/iliopsoas/sartorius.) Round kicks were my bane! The issues were rather persistent, and debilitating enough to encourage me to seek medical attention. My primary care physician prescribed me 6 weeks of physical therapy. Not only did I go to PT, I made sure to do the exercises virtually EVERY DAY. The exercises included various stretches, as well as strengthening exercises (from leg lifts to balance exercises, to other forms of resistance training.) I did plenty of research online, and I found that martial artists, dancers, soccer and hockey players all suffered from similar ailments. Some of the research also indicated that the issues have a tendency to go chronic fairly easy without proper care and allowing the injury to fully heal. I highly recommend that you see your doctor and try to get some PT!!!
  14. It's really looking like that brand isn't worth it, doesn't it? I'd write a review on Amazon (be sure to share those pictures!) Also, it might be worth making a Facebook or Twitter post about it. Again, my Meijin gis have some of the same flaws to a lesser extent, but cost half as much. Heck, they're probably made in the same factory!
  15. Here's a fun article, if you haven't read it already. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41750080 The thief's quote at the end made my day.
  16. Welcome, sir!
  17. Thank you very much for taking the time to post the review! I suspect you got a knock-off. Doesn't the Seishin gi have an embroydered crest on the back? Yours looks like it's silk-screened. While I can't afford $240+ for a uniform now, I've certainly investigated these (and I noticed the price difference on Amazon, too.) The price difference makes me think there's something fishy going on. All this being said, my Meijin gis has mostly the same features as the Seishin (no high waist, no crotch vent and no fancy label on the back.) It also has some similar issues with the finishing touches - treads not looking tidied up and what not... but I paid about $240 total for the both of them, after shipping.
  18. Agreed. His presentations are a bit overwhelming in that sense, but I find that's about par for most internet-personalities, however. But yeah... he pretty much nailed what I was struggling with, and that's the landing. Another issue I was having, and realized it fully during last night's class, is that we are frequently either practicing these kicks without a target, or hitting a shield. The first one leaves you vaccuously performing the technique, and the other has a target that doesn't want to move. Last night, one of my instructors used a focus pad. It provided a target, and allowed me to complete the kick by going through the target, and not bouncing back some. I was way more confident about performing the technique and landing.
  19. You know... Jesse Enkamp just posted an article about nerves in Karate. Just about everything he says in the article is pretty much identical to what I'm trying to tell the students in my math classes. Take a look! http://www.karatebyjesse.com/overcome-anxiety-grading-competing/
  20. Our master instructor's instructor was Korean. When our master instructor is present, I get the sense that the terminology and culture are roughly accurate. Our CIs are a bit removed from that, and frequently disagree with how things are pronounced. We start and end class every day by bowing in/out and some brief meditation.
  21. Yeah, going to PT and visiting a chiropractor were really the way to go for me. A crooked pelvis and relatively weak hip muscles along with trying to kick hard (and probably with relatively poor technique, as I'm still a beginner) lead me to some pretty uncomfortable days!
  22. My wife and I really enjoyed the first season, and we're excited for the second. Some other shows we're looking forward to future seasons of: Game of Thrones West World Man in the High Castle House of Cards
  23. Heh, I'm still waiting to find a movie that's really scary! (Well, besides Idiocracy... that movie seems to be coming to fruition a bit too soon!)
  24. How is your (kicking) training now?Much improved! Thanks for asking, sir! I don't have any issues with any of my normal kicks (front, side, round, spin-hook, crescent, etc.) The only kick that kinda seems to aggravate things would be my jumping round kicks - lots of hips required for that one!
