TKD or Hapkido or Both?
KoreanTiger30 replied to sk0t's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
My school teaches TKD, Hapkido, Haidong Gumdo, and kyuk Too Ki. -
The kamas are one of my favorite weapons. One reson is the traditional side ot kamas and second because of their effectiveness. I was told by my master form Korea who's father used kamas for 70 years as a farmer and I saw a video of his father and his techniques were the best i have ever seen jsut form using them all the time. They were the greatest self defense weapon against swordsman and such. In the hands of a skilled practioner they could defend against about any weapon.

Do blackbelts have a responsibility to....
KoreanTiger30 replied to karatefox's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This is a story that will add some thought. I try to avoid all confrontations as mucha s possible because I dont want to hurt nayone or get hurt in the situation. One night i was coming outside a Target after getting an ink cartridge for school papers and I saw 6 guys harassing a 16 year old girl. You know what I mean. She kept saying leave me alone and stop touching me. I walked over and said is there a problem and one of them replied "this doesnt concern you" and I looked at the girl and she was crying. So I pulled the girl away from them and put her behind me and and that when I realized here it goes because they started circling me. Well one after another tried to attack me and I would throw and joint lock punch and kick well 4 of them lsot conciiousness so I called 911 because the other two ran off. But On arival the police searched the 4 guys and found 2 gus and 3 knives. Still to this day that girl writes me for saving her life. I thought about afterwards what would of happend to her if I hadnt been there. So I think we do have a responsibililty, we train in these arts for a reaosn to stand by the weak and stand up for ourselves. -
TKD bashing?
KoreanTiger30 replied to NightShade_UK's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have done Taekwondo Jidokwan style fo rabout 8 years now. After all the schools I have seen and competitions I have been in it comes down to the line of sport and art. My Master a former Korean Tiger Demo member and Hodori Team member tell sus all the time about the differences. Ji Do Kwan is the School of Knowledge and we base everyting 50/50. Each sid eof body should be complete from punching ot kicking. We do not use sparring equipemnt when we train because we are taught to train our bodies into "iron". However we do go to competitions and you can see a remarkable difference between sport schhols and traditional schools with sport schools the kicks become sloppy and not effective only to get the point. When you watch traditional schools like ours you can see the kicks are landed with speed, accuracy, and quality technique. As well most sport schools dont emphasize punches because you can not score points easily with it unlike our training my comkpetitiors score points all the time with puches because they are solid. -
froms or poomse
KoreanTiger30 replied to IAMA_chick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
There are so many forms that we learn at our school it shard to name them all. Well for white belts the learn the kibon or KiCho forms along with Pyung Ahn forms, Tae Geuk and Pal Gwe are taught through color belts along with nunchuk forms. At Black belt level you learn all the WTF forms like Koryo, Geumgang, and Taebeck and so forth. Um also since it is still a traditional tae wkon do school where they operate under Ji DO Kwan style you also learn the Tang Soo Do forms. along with that black belts are required to learn 3 bo forms, 3 sai forms, kama forms, spear forms, whul do forms, fan form, and sword forms. -
Is archery a fighting art?
KoreanTiger30 replied to KaratekaAikidoist's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I know like said earlier that Kuk Sool Won has archery I alos know that Tukong Musool, Hwa Rang DO , some style sof Hapkiod also have archery. There is also a separate archery fighting art called Kung Sul whic derives form the Hwa rang warrior style of archery it used to be included in the military martila arts in ancient times but in modern kOrean arts it seems to have fallen out of the picture. -
beginner needs advise
KoreanTiger30 replied to Icetuete's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Choosing martila art can be a tough choice because there are alot ot choose from. If you are looking toward TKD there are schools out there that teach a more philosophiical of martial arts in the TKD style. Especially if those school are still members of the old KWAN. I would try to find out that too maybe a JI Do KWan school because I know they are heavy in a more mental training way at least thats the way at some local school around here. If you want some serious combat training with a spiritual aspect i would aim for Hapkido or Kung Fu. -

Shogun- I love the kwan Dao the best because of its weight and its is helping fixing muscle in my shoulder form a hapkido accident , but I have found from tlaking to Korean masters that since Korea and China share a border alot of the kung fu wepons fall over into Korean martial arts and it has been great learning them. I have a friend in Shaolin Kung Fu and we spar alot with the weapons and the more i do that the more quick I become with the larger weapons. Monkeygirl- Here is a fun fact that i came across when researching martial art wepaons in my college paper and that the korean fans had 6 inch blades stemming off of the fan to cut the attcker and also they would have darts in them as well that could peirce samurai armor when opened.

This is just a fact that I have picked up from some KOrean masters in hapkido. THye told me that in order to be a police officer in KOrea you have to hold a first dan in hapkido. -

Hapkido Throws
KoreanTiger30 replied to chi_town_guy's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have been doing Hapkido for abour eight years now and we spent the first two months jsut learning how to fall. My master stresses that to the fullest because the outcome of the fight could quickly turn around and counters are always out there. We practiced on mats first because we need to know the proper way to fall so not to injure ourselves. Next we went to puzzle mats, then outside on grass, and then at black belt we had to practice on concrete. if you learn hapkido separtely then they will teach you more in depth information behind each technique (throw). I have seen alot of Korean master that teach throwing in Tae Kwon Do but since it isnt a main focus the students miss out on laot of the important information. -
Would anyone be able to tell me where i might be able to purchase ninja uniforms of different colors like midnight blue rather than black. thanks, Allen

I stated bo as the most universal weapon because of its handy applications. For instance a broom stick is quickly accesible and objects of that nature. Its a great start to learn weapon mechanics especially on future long weapons like spear, naginata, whul do, monk spade, anything along those lines. I came to that realization from teaching weapons classes at a school. The instructor wanted to teach weapons bu tdid not have time to do the class because of other class that were needed. He hired me as an adjunct instructor to teach the weapons class and when we began with the bo the student became familiar with holding a weapons. It made it much easier to adapt to future ones.

Do instructors pay for classes?
KoreanTiger30 replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
At my school you have to take an assistant instructor test and once you pass that you get paid to teach the classes and tuition is free and even for multiple styles in the school. -
TKD & HKD: My first two instructors were former Korean tigers captain nad coach and they knew how to push you there wasnt a day I left without feeling sore. they always respected me and wouldnt be afraid to talk about anything with me. Then They had to move (one went back to Korea for a little bit) Then the school got sold to another Korean master a young one. He was about 27 but seemed mor worried about money than anything else. I left the school because he was trying to ge tme to drop out of college to open a school under him. This master also became my first Haedong Gumdo instructor. Then I decided to go to college around where my first master lived and then I felt home again and he continued my Tae Kwon Do , Haedong Gumdo, and Hapkido training and then introduced me to Kyuk Too KI.

Its never a good idea to in school date I speak from experience. I used to go out with this one girl and its really hard if you're an instructor to focus. We broke up mutually but then she started resenting me so I left the school becuase of her and alot of drama and politics wiht the master. Then we also have this group of ours for a demo team from the old school we all learned. Well two of my friends out of this group decided to date and it lasted about a month. Ever since then there has been a split in the group and now I have to set up times for the rest of us to practice with one and not the other.

kyuktooki - korean kickboxing
KoreanTiger30 replied to aznkarateboi's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
it encompasses mainly Tae Kwon Do leg power and speed, Hapkido joint locks and submissons, and Yudo (Judo) throwing and grappling. Usually like a combination of Korean art's hand techniques mainly from hapkido as well but also some Soo Bahk Do. -
What woudl be better, sword or staff?
KoreanTiger30 replied to BKJ1216's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
kchenault- I know what you mean about how hard it is to find a Haedong school. I am on th eastcoast and there was a split in Korea between the two federatins and now there are schools popping up everywhere from New York down to the Carolinas. My Master got appointed the east coast representative for the International federation (Original before the split) He he trying toround up all previous Masters from that Federation in the states to start teaching it again. I will let you know if a master will begin teching in your area. -

What woudl be better, sword or staff?
KoreanTiger30 replied to BKJ1216's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
In Haedong Gumdo (KOrean Sword art) we start off using a wood sword (mokgum) and then after so many belt slevel if your techniques are worthy they give you an imitation steel sword (gagum) and then once black belt you receive a sharp blade (jin Gum) the reaosn being is your techniques have to be so proficient that if if you techniques are sloppy it will damge the blade if you practicing cutting. We cut straw, bamboo and such that are equivalent to like human necks, and waists. You must practice control with sword thats why we do candle extinguishing where you put the falme out without touching the flame with the sword. Also we do sword techniques in Hapkido and bo staff is usually taught before sword in Hapkido , but for more detail fighting with sword I turn to Haedong Gumdo. -
I voted bo satff because its the most universal weapon, but my favorite weapons are the cane and whul do (Korean for the Kwan Dao)
