Happy to hear that you’re back in the dojo and that I inspired you to start this thread. Best of luck with your training, keep sharing the journey
-
Thanks bushidoman Just finished another solo-session with strength/endurance - kihon - kata But things are looking brighter ahead (at the moment) and hopefully I’ll be back in the club dojo as soon as autumn semester starts. Hope you’re all having a great summer, filled with karate
-
Just a quick update: No more club training for adults this semester Keep training on my own, but miss sensei’s guidance and the social aspect of sweating and growing as a group. Hope you’re all well and training

Yes, I love it, and it has become a natural ”next step” in my solo karate practice Just finished another session with conditioning/kihon on the Versys. Find it fascinating to notice that the way I perform kata afterwards actually seem to change subtly when it comes to understanding of distance, required power, timing etc. Quite some time left before we adults may return to the club dojo...hope you are all well and training in spite of everything

Finally time to add some actual impact to my solo training sessions. Our family got a Century Versys vs 3 today. Just tried it for the first time and love the way it makes the techniques feel so much more logical. It also encourages creativity and deeper analysis of application of various parts of katas. As well as conditioning various parts of hands, feet, knees etc It feels like actual impact adds another dimension to the session

Happy to hear that, both of you

Thanks a lot bushidoman, sensei and aurik. Your support means a lot, hope you’re well and training

Just finished todays solo session, no club training right now for me due to harder Covid-restrictions Hope you’re all well and training
-
Thanks a lot, Bushidoman. Of course the cold came back again, had one or two club sessions before that (being home with toddlers who are ill usually ends up that way ) but today I was back in the club dojo for a double session after a couple of weeks absence from club training. So good to train hard together with likeminded karatekas again. Hope you all have a great weekend.

I see, we do (did, before Covid) those kind of exercises from time to time in the club dojo as well. I used to end my solo sessions with those, but they got lost during the time the club dojo was closed, will pick them up again. Thanks for reminding me how they were done. Today the cold had let go, and I could again do a solo training session with high intensity, full power. Felt wonderful.

Thank you very much Bushidoman for the encouragement and advice. By ”concentration kick” do you mean standing on one leg and doing mae geri, mawashi etc with the other, or is it another kind of balance exercise? Would love to know more

Congratulations on the promotion and for sharing those pics.

Thanks a lot sensei Two steps forward, one step back...currently having a cold, missed yesterday’s club session. Have to stay home from work for a couple of days now although the todo-list seems to grow exponentially each day I’m gone. Also sprained my thumb really bad shortly after the first club session. A stupid mistake putting too much weight on it when getting down to stretch. At least it’s not broken One thing is a beautiful karate-related silver lining though: The ”Cobra Kai” series is available on Netflix. Great for binge watching while waiting for the cold to surrender and the thumb to stop aching.

Finally back in the club dojo for a double ”Covid19-modified” training session, yesterday. First training of the autumn semester. Good to be back. Hope you’re all well and training

Sorry to hear bushidoman, hope you find ways to keep training anyway. Thank you sensei, hope you and all at KF are well and training in spite of the way all of us are currently being challenged.
-
I usually do the following parts when doing a longer solo training: 1. Strength (includes warm-up/stretching) 2. Kihon, usually slow-walkthrough-full speed 3. Kata, at least the latest requirements for next rank. Last session of the week I preferably add all the kata I’ve learned so far 4. Bunkai (against an imaginary partner) As my daily routine I do at least: 2. (blocks low-mid-high, block-lead-hammerfist drill, punch high-mid-low and kicks (mae, mawashi yoko geri x2) and 3. Go ho no uke (perfect for very limited space) of the above I’ve also started putting together this YT-playlist of ”follow-along solo practice”, maybe you can find something useful there: Best of luck with your training!

Just got the information that our club dojo is currently closed for at least the rest of the month because of the Corona Covid-19 outbreak in our region. Think it is a very wise decision by our C I, but I will really miss the intense, challenging club sessions Wish you all a great weekend

Welcome back and best of luck with your continued training
-
Thank you Aurik, sorry to hear about your private hardships, hope you find the best possible way through them.

Glad to hear you find joy in the new challenges and that you keep training

Thank you very much, Sensei, your support and knowledge means a lot.

I have kept training, moving closer to a 3rd kyu level, but I must admit I have struggled somewhat lately. The struggle has been mostly with the spiritual side of my MA training. I do wish my MA-training to be a spiritual journey as well. I have come to realize that I actually wish to incorporate elements of my daily spiritual practice from a Christian tradition into my daily MA-sessions and even club sessions (for instance during the sitting mokuso we always begin every club session with). For a while I feared that I would either have to separate the physical training from the spiritual or would have to look deeper into a different spiritual path (from some other tradition) in order to continue with karate on more advanced levels. After giving it a lot of thought, reading a lot by karatekas such as Iain Abernathy, doing a lot of research and by changing small aspects of my daily routine, I think I am now starting to find the right way ahead for me. How my karate and my personal spiritual practice can and will complement one another and make the continued training one of body-mind-spirit - as I want it to be. Hope you’re all training hard and well, today’s training consisted of a solo session for me including strength/kihon and Ji no kata 7-8, Sanchin, Gekisaida ni (with bunkai patterns), Juroko (with bunkai) and Pinan Godan (with bunkai)

My first double club training for the decade took place yesterday. Always wonderful to be back in the dojo after a few weeks away from physically demanding club sessions. Looking forward to a new year and decade as karate- and budoka. My goal for this year is to keep up the daily kihon/kata routine, to test for 3rd kyu and to participate in any club camps arranged. Wish you all a great MA-year

Welcome to the forum, looking forward to following your MA journey as it continues

Happy to hear about your training and experiences again
