  1. You read too much into what I'm saying I said "Wado... he never said those exercises were useless, just that they don't teach timing. And no, none of those exercises that you listed teach any sort of timing." I never said karate has no timing or old senseis had no timing... In fact I'm sure karateka of old did drills to improve their timing. So maybe they have timing, maybe they don't, but it sure isn't because of kata.
  2. Wado... he never said those exercises were useless, just that they don't teach timing. And no, none of those exercises that you listed teach any sort of timing.
  3. Just stand your ground and counterattack... a few controlled strikes always beats a flurry of wild ones. Also, I've noticed that simply throwing a jab at them as they charge usually stops them.
  4. Interesting, considering that free-sparring has little relation to actual self defence. I think free sparring at an early stage can actually decrease one's ability in a self-defence encounter, due to an over-reliance on high kicks and tournament technique. I don't think the phrase "freestyle practice" implies high kicks and tournaments...
  5. it depends on why you are in the school.... if you are there for fun and fitness its fine.. but if you want to learn some combative skills some form of freestyle practice is a must...
  6. Wow you're pretty small for your age... lol.. i am 16 and i weigh only 5 pounds less than you
  7. where do wing chun fighters get power for their techniques, especially chain punching? Whenever I see wing chun people punching, they are punching rapidly but this doesn't seem to allow much body movement.
  8. I have a problem when I'm sparring... when I see punches coming towards my face I tend to look away and move my head back a lot causing me to be off balance and in a bad position... Are there any good methods to correct this? thanks
  9. Yes, I know my profile says I do Kung Fu, and I do. A few months ago, I started taking Shotokan at my local chinese community center for fun and exercise (in addition to kung fu). I now know Heian Shodan. So.. what are some of the applications that you learned or came up with for the moves?
  10. What do you recommend I do to get lots of functional strength without too much bulk (kind of like bruce lee... good physicque but not too big... and lots of strength and speed)? I heard that bodybuilding is very detrimental to martial arts because the muscles are usually more showy than functional. Thanks.
