I trained with GKR for 2 years - if it wasn't for the marketting bullshit and the brainwashing it would otherwise have been an alright style but none of the other martial arts i did during that time ever pushed so hard on money orientated stuff, so it bothered me to the point where I left. I mean this as no offence to you - you like what you like, enjoy what you do etc which is good i'm just explaining my experience with GKR. the sparring done in 'lower' classes in GKR is a bit of a joke, get into some more advanced classes ( i know some regions do this) and you get some actual contact. Also my advice to you is to start sparring the black belts as soon as possible. Also don't listen to that crap about block then strike. Parry and strike at the same time or you're fist fodder

parry, guard yourself well and punch as they punch. Or alternatievely if they are 'charging you' a front kick to the lower abdomen usually stops most chargers, or you could step out of the way and knife hand strike.

im gonna say it first as you'd see for any martial art you're not going to be able to learn anything from a book or movie as far as capoeira or any other martial art goes you might learn how to do ginga though i guess.

i haven't seen coins mentioned here a pocket full of coins can daze any opponent: try and block 10 coins heading for your face - even one will do some kind of confusion and at that point the punches are rolling. phone books are pretty effective -its a slightly bulky weapon so you have to use your legs as well. It also works as a nice shield too if you can make it work. Car Keys ( probably mentioned earlier) can make for some pretty brutal punches. Belt bag of any kind, I was joking with a friend once and made up a 'handbag kata' we tested the bunkai and he was on the ground flat on his back after I'd pulled the handbag from his grip clobbered him, kicked him, then thrown the handbag in his face and pushed him over

The "Karate wars" and inter-dojo challenges.

that sounds like a MA movie i saw once it was a MA movie where two schools fought each other and only one guy survived from one school- his arm got trapped in a forge or something and he ended up with an iron arm, He then made this comeback and beat everyone up with his iron arm. -
what you need is a tat that says 'karate 4 lyfe!!'

fighting a Tall and agile kciker
theswarm replied to superfighter's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
versus a large fighter that enjoys kicking i tend to approach then retreat constantly some people like to bounce alot when sparring like a boxer, I don't. So instead I tend to advance and retreat which usually causes a fighter like this to commit to a kick, as kicks are very easy to read I can generally advance on the kick, or counter strike the kick deflecting it's path and strike an opening. This isn't always full proof as i'm not experienced enough to always make this work against higher experienced martial artists. But it works often- especially on those who are too scared to use their hands. -
by the way the most effortless way of getting your veins popping out is hanging upside down and watch all your veins pop out then if you lift the limb above the level of your heart the veins disappear either that or have a hot shower.

i prefer pictures to words in tattoos that being said i'm getting the word 'spirit' on my right shoulder muscle I have a tattoo on my calf of two fists breaking their rope bindings whoever said don't show your tattoos, I believe, is right - even if you work somewhere where there's room for promotion you don't wanna show it, it WILL slow you down. I like having tats that no one knows about till i crank out some shorts and a wifebeater.

why would you want to? the answer to how is to get blood to flow through them at a higher pressure I would assume. If you do any kind of weight training you'll see the veins appear on your arms.

i like it ill have to try it out

man that'd be cool befriending a black belt chimpanzee tho hey

Commerical Music interests do not always represent that genre's true culture. Much like with martial arts you won't truly start to learn until you're black belt, you won't truly see what's good within musical subgenres until you find the heart of it's underground culture. Rap is definately one where (most) commercial rap makes me cringe and has lyrical content that reminds me of R&B (which is probably one of the only genres of music i totally hate) but the underground rap is awesome.

collar bone snapped in two places from flipping my bmx mid air about 8 years ago wrist from losing control of my skateboard downhill about 6 years ago chipped my kneecap doing hi jump in athletics about 10 years ago. Martial arts injuries: jarred finger - incorrectly blocking a king geri (kin geri? or king geri?), tendons in my left foot all bruised from roundkicking an elbow. I got kicked in the knee that i had chipped - nothing happened though (was all psychological), I thought it was all over and dropped to the ground but quickly got up again after realizing i wasn't injured at all.

blocking a haymaker punch (John Wayne Punch)
theswarm replied to Shotokan_Fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
its a haymaker we can't really assume anything because of course it's situation by situation, however, upon seeing the windup of a haymaker we immediately know which arm and what path it's taking. You can do alot with that kind of information - haymakers require alot of area to cover so if you stepped in on their opposing side and brought the fight to extremely close range using whatever you felt necessary then I imagine that'd do ok -
How do you handle Stare Downs??

omg i laughed so hard at your response -
anything that causes concussion can result in death so holding the left side of their head stable while elbow striking the right temple would do a fair bit of damage a 'board braking' knife hand strike between the 3rd and 4th (i think?) vertebrae will sever the spine...apparently anyway

did you ever used to smoke pot as a teenager? just kidding... nah I can sorta relate to what you're saying
-
size matters you just need to know how to use the fact you are smaller (get in close and low) or bigger (distance yourself) to your advantage otherwise you'll get cleaned up
