For our regular staffs (not long or short) we say between chin and eye brow for length, but if you can't find one just right, go shorter instead of longer (makes some of our spins easier). As for weight, I'd agree that learning with a heavy staff is great for building up arm muscles.

Another good thing to remember anytime you do physical work is to keep moving around and cooldown well to avoid a buildup of lactic acid which can cause soreness in the morning

We had a visiting instructor this week who did joolbong (nunchaku) with us. He was telling us that it's illegal to own them in Texas, but it's not illegal to carry a gun.

I try to train at home, but there's not much room in my apartment. I have however found just enough room to do most of my bongoligi (spinning staff techniques) without hitting the ceiling too often. There's a small field outside the appartment I think I'm going to try next time I get home before dark

I've been reading about workout routines, and one thing I've noticed is that they all assume that I already know how much I can lift, and honestly I haven't got the foggiest. For example some routines recomend just a few reps with weights near the max, and some call for lots of low weight reps. My question is: does anyone have suggestions for finding what my max is, and what is "low weight"? I'd assume trial and error is the only way, but how much rest should I have before each trial (as obviously if I try something it's going to affect each successive try)

I agree .. I've just begun learning the first 15 bong oligi (sp?) and I've watched the advanced students and I can see how important the basics are. We spent the whole first day just working on the first technique because most of the other techniques are just a variation of that one. -
Well, I'm not sure if that helped or made me more confused Everything I've found about the rage lt pro has said that it's a laptop video card. I was thinking last night actually that since you ran the spinning box test fine with directx7 but not 8 that your drivers might just need to be updated (drivers are how your hardware communicates to windows basically) Now the problem is that this card is old enough that I doubt ATI is still making new drivers for it. These were the latest drivers I could find at ATI's website: http://www.ati.com/support/products/pc/rageltpro/win98/rageltprowin98drivers.html?cboOS=Windows+98&cboProducts=RAGE+LT+PRO&eula=&choice=agree&cmdNext=Next Near the top there are two choices for "display drivers" I'd choose the second one if you don't think you need that dvd stuff it talks about, otherwise choose the first one. There should be instructions included on how to install it. You might also want to consider calling ATIs tech support. I think if you go here: http://www.ati.com/support/index.html You'll be able to email them. They'll probably be a lot faster at helping you than I'll be able to

Somewhere near where the Manufacturer was there should be a Name: listed. If you can't find it there here's another way to find the same info. Right click on My Computer and choose properties. Click on the Hardware tab then click on the Device Manager button. You should see something called Display Adapters. click on the + next to Display Adapters. There should be something listed there. It'll probably say ATI Somethingorother. Post whatever that says here.

Did you find the name and manufacturer of your video card? It should be listed right above those tests you did. If you post that I can tell you if you'll have to spend money or not

Assuming you're running a Windows machine (95, 98, 2000, ME or XP) go to the start button then click on run type in dxdiag and hit ok (directx is a microsoft product and this is the diagnostic tool that's a part of it) It'll start collecting information about your system and bring up a window. Each tab will have some info given. Here's the info it would be useful to have: From the 'system' tab: DirectX version (also the game might say it requres a certain directx version so see if your's is at that number or higher) From the "Display" tab: In the box labeled Device give the name and manufacturer. In the driver box there should be a version given That should be enough info for now really - oh what OS are you running? (I think someone above asked) My guess is it's your Video Card (aka graphics card). You can get a good one for less than 100$ now and you can get a not-terrible 3D one even cheaper. I think it could also be that you have a new enough video card but you don't have the drivers or directx version high enough for the game, which might give that error.

A few weeks back I decided to see what I looked like without my goatee (which I've had for at least a year and a half) It ended up just making me look about 3 years younger :lol

lol good question! My girlfriend and I always argue because she prefers my hair short (like 2-3 inches) and I prefer it long (like mouth or chin hehe)

My instructor told us that when he was testing for his black belt he had to drive overnight to get there. His mom thought that wasn't very fair because he'd be so tired, but he told her "What if I was driving overnight and someone attacked me at a rest stop? Will they care that it's not fair I'm tired?" So I suppose I sort of support the notion of not knowing when you're being tested, because you don't always get to choose your battles.

thoughts on Kuk Sool Wan?

You can also find links to the history of kuk sool. And the solution to your problem is to start taking kuk sool over the summer and then continue kuk sool at school I realize that might not be a possibility though. I know there's an instructor in Davenport who's a good friend of my instructor and comes to our school occasionally. Looks like there's also one in Clinton. What university do you go to? The hapkido club at University of Iowa was fun and actually the 15 techniques we learned there were really similar to the first 15 I learned in Kuk Sool. I've heard differing accounts of what Hapkido is supposed to be but the Hapkido club at U of Iowa (and Iowa State - that's where teh UIowa instructor trained) has takedown techniques at white belt and later kicks and punches. I've only seen the movies, haven't read any of the comics. However, when Magneto said "We like what you've done with your hair," that, to me coupled with her name, indicated that she had been fairly close to the "bad guys" previously.

Are these fingerpad or fingertip pushups? Sometimes when we're doing our conditioning we'll do 5 5 fingerpad pushups, then 4 4 fingerpad etc. until we get to 1 1 fingerpad pushup. No real trick to it, but I think doing the 5, 4, 3 etc. helps gradually build up the required muscles as opposed to just jumping right into it.
