  1. Look at it this way. If Ki is life force then anything you do, in life, is an application of Ki. This includes getting up from a chair or throwing a punch. True that physics are involved when you do these things. Can you seperate mind, body and spirit? I submit that you cannot. Have you ever gotten off the couch to get a beer with out your body being directed to do so without by your mind? How about getting the beer with your mind and not your body? I don't think so. Unless you are the undead, I am fairly certain that your life force was involved, ie your Ki. As for being afraid. Lets say your walk up on a rattle snake without noticing it. It rattles, adrenaline kicks in and you jump away from it. Was that fear? Would a fearless person stand there and get bit? Hell no! That would just be stupid! The guy that jumped out of the way was being smart, not fearful. Charisma is an application of life force if you are alive. If you choose your course of action based on fear of what someone may do or think, if someone else "makes you angry," sad or depressed(you didn't choose to purposefully display those emotions) then you have allowed someone else's life force to dominate your's. If other people dominate you and dictate your course of action and feelings then your are practicing weak Ki. Don't even think about blowing someone's head off with a Ki ball cauz you don't have what it takes. Can you see any great martial arts master sulking in a corner at a party, letting their boss push them around and abuse them, lying in bed with the shades drawn eating ben & Jerry's cause they asked a girl to dance and she said no? I don't think so. Taking charge of your life may not develop, in you, the power to blow someone's head off with a Ki ball(insert Ki related feat of your choice) but I don't think you will develop that kind of Ki without it.
  2. Having martial arts in common with a chick might help build rappor but no chick will go out with you just because you do karate. want to know how to pick up women? Get off karate forums and go to this one. http://www.fastseduction.com/guide/ Good luck...
  3. Check out this link. http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm
  4. Ki is life force, energy or "The Force" for the Jedi out there. It is in all things and moves through all things. If you are a rock, tree or person you have Ki. You can use it to the extent that you have mastered your life. Ki is the force behind your punch. It is the focused concentration you use when driving or reading. Ever see a group of people shut up when a soft spoken individual starts to speak? That is the force of his personality dominating the group. That is an individual with strong Ki. A lot of people do amazing, unbelivable, thought impossible feats. Most do not parctice martial arts. They are people who have developed powerful Ki. Here is the citation for Audy Murphy's Congressional Medal of Honor. He makes Rambo look like a pansy. He had everything going aganst him, he was short, skinney and from Texas... Yet he was a master and radiated powerfull Ki... Read this. MURPHY, AUDIE L. "Rank and organization: Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, Company B 1 5th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near Holtzwihr France, 26 January 1945. Entered service at: Dallas, Tex. Birth: Hunt County, near Kingston, Tex. G.O. No.. 65, 9 August 1945. Citation 2d Lt. Murphy commanded Company B, which was attacked by 6 tanks and waves of infantry. 2d Lt. Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to prepared positions in a woods, while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him, to his right, 1 of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. 2d Lt. Murphy continued to direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, 2d Lt. Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment, and employed its .50 caliber machinegun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to German fire from 3 sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every available weapon to eliminate 2d Lt. Murphy, but he continued to hold his position and wiped out a squad which was trying to creep up unnoticed on his right flank. Germans reached as close as 10 yards, only to be mowed down by his fire. He received a leg wound, but ignored it and continued the single-handed fight until his ammunition was exhausted. He then made his way to his company, refused medical attention, and organized the company in a counterattack which forced the Germans to withdraw. His directing of artillery fire wiped out many of the enemy; he killed or wounded about 50. 2d Lt. Murphy's indomitable courage and his refusal to give an inch of ground saved his company from possible encirclement and destruction, and enabled it to hold the woods which had been the enemy's objective. " Like I said, everything and everyone has Ki. The amount that you have and your ability to use it is limited to the extent you have mastered your own life. There is no seperation between mind, body and spirit. The best way to develop strong, useful Ki is to actively eliminate fear in your life. Standing up to people who want to kick you butt is easy. Anytime you make a decision based on what someone else might do or think, that is fear. Start making decisions on the best information you have and not on opinions and you will start to develop strong Ki. People will notice the difference.
  5. When you do a Kiai (spirit shout) you are exhailing when you strike or push and inhailing when drawing or pulling. I don't think the actual sound is that important but it might help if you shout or scream things like get back, stop and help. In a figh,t in public, sounding like Bruce Lee may get you shot.
  6. I perfer a booted toe kick to the shin while stepping in. A little pain is good to set the tone of the fight. In general I like low kicks to the legs. Hammer fist stikes to the fore arms. Lapel chokes.
  7. Go for Jujitsu. The styles of Jujitsu vary but most include striking, grappeling and weapons. They probably don't have competitions but competitions get you hurt.
  8. Any school that is associated with the Bujinkan http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/phillybujinkandojo/index.html Or look up the Warrior Information Network on the net
  9. There are a lot to jerks out there, so be careful. Unless you are in it for sporting competition you are learning to protect your self. Not get hurt training. After sparring with people that don't understand control a few times I won't work with anyone I don't trust.
  10. My experience if you do a carotid artery choke it takes about 3 seconds from the time you've applied it correctly. The brain has no reserve of oxygen. From my medic training I know that the brain can go about 4 minutes with out oxygen before brain damage occures. 10 minutes w/o oxygen and they are dead for sure. The longer you hold the choke the longer it will take them to wake up. A windpipe choke takes forever but is painfull as hell. They will either tap out right away or in a fight they will loose it and start squirming and making all kinds of horrible noises. In Judo class I always went for the choke if it went to the ground. Being tall and thin I didn't have the leverage that the shorter stockier guys had. Lapel choke was my favorite for a sacrifice throw gone bad or if they muscle you down and land on top of you. Their body weight makes it more effective. Being thin I can confirm that it is harder to choke a thin person. Only a couple of the instructors could choke me out while I could always choke the guys with thick necks... that is if I could get a hold of their necks...
  11. JohnnyS, by your creds you apparently know what you are doing. I am just saying that going to the ground is not the uber move to end all moves.
  12. I would say any MA dojo that doesn't have a collection of trophies in their front window. If they do or focus on tournaments then they are a combative sport Judo, TKD, and some Karate can go either way. It depends on the instructor and how they teach it. Boxing might win you a fight but the fact is that it is a sport with rules. Fighting someone who fights with out rules when that is all you know can ruin your whole day. Krav Maga, most JJ, Gung Fu, Aiki Jitsu and Ninpo are combative arts.
  13. craknek, Isn't it supposed to be: "I will not fear, Fear is the mind killer, I will face my fears, I will let them pass through me..." or was that just the mini-series? Back to the original question. The difference between jj schools is the same as the difference between any martal art. MA started their development long ago when some dude got in a fight, did something that worked and won. Remembering what he did, he then refined it, called it a technique and taught it to his family(clan, tribe, ryu, ect.). Put a bunch of technques together and you have a MA provided your family lives long enough to pass it down. All the jj schools out there had a collection of techniques, skills, tactics that worked and they lived (some technique being barrowed from other schools). There were jj schools that are not around today because of inferior technique or just bad luck. A martial art is nothing more that a set of military techniques (martial means "of or pertaining to Mars" the Roman God of war). What the US Army does with an M-16 or a tank is a martial art. Japanese martial arts originated in China. They were brought to China from India by the monk Da Mo (the Bodhidarma). The were probably brought to India by that Army of Alexander the Great. There are some out there who believe that Alex got the arts from roving bands of Celtic warriors. Since the Celts had no writen records there is no way of proving it. That's the difference between jj schools...
  14. Just my opinion... We will probably never know
  15. Biting would be a major distraction with the pain and blood and all. It won't win the fight but it will make the other guy think. I'm not say'n that grapplers don't have friends but they are not with you all the time. What I am say'n about the other guy's the backup (his friends) is that you are not always going to know if they are there or not. If you are in a bar fight and you got five frends there by all means take him to the ground. If you are there by your self be careful about going to the ground. His friends might sit back until he needs help or quietly move around behind you to strike. Example: If you are in an argument that turns into a fight and you take the guy to the ground and start trashing him. His friend (standing in the background) thinks he can articulate in court how he believed that you intended to cause great bodly harm or death to his pal. Maybe his friend is screaming cauz you are hurting him. He can walk up and knofe you in the back. There is a good chance he will get off, especialy if others in the croud thought you were hurting him bad. If you die that is one less witness for your side. If you have friends there it might be too late for them to do anything. I know how to fight from the ground but I will stay on my feet as long as possible.
  16. My mistake on the bjj thing. I still think Shaq could take him, as is. Shaq is fast regardless of his size. He has to be to play B ball. Bigger, Stronger, faster makes a difference.
  17. Bjj... bjj... bjj... It is a complete system but not invinsible. Being bigger, stronger and faster from all the basketball, weight lifting, sheer reach advantage and roids, I am betting that Shaq could take Tito any day of the week. Tito probably couldn't get Shaq to the ground and would loose even if he did. What say you all u bjj fans?
  18. Everyone needs to know how to fight standing and on the ground. No technique if fool proof. Unless you know you are alone with the guy and it is one on one I would stay standing as long as possidle. Take me down with a doubble leg take down and see how far that gets you when 3 of my friends come out of the crowd and start kicking you. Best defence for that is gun or run like hell... Try that from the ground. I will always try to make the fight as un-fair as possible. If you are over 15 you should assume that every fight you get in is to the death because the little gang banger you run into is gonna treat it that way. He has friends. If you can run first. If you can't hit untill you can run or can land a deciding blow. A grappler will always beat a non-grappler if it is one on one and the other guy isn't thinking about biting you! Learn both, study strategies and tactics, be able to run!
  19. Avoid any Judo Dojo that has lots of trophys. Some teach combat Judo but most teache it as a sport. I knew 3 instructors that blew out knees in tournaments. From personal experience I would recommend Ninpo Taijitsu if you can find it. A authentic Ninpo school sanctioned by the Bujinkan usualy doesn't train kids(under 18) so you won't be too bad off Gramps(I am 31). From what I have read off the forum here I would also recommend Krav Maga, Jujitsu, and Kenpo.
  20. Go with someone else...
  21. If you are looking for grappeling check this place out. The Bujinkan is the real deal straight from Japan. Don't believe all the smack people talk about Ninjitsu. They don't teach you how to be an assasin or spy. It is Jujitsu from the underdog's point of view. I don't know the guy that runs the school but I trained with the guy that started the tenchijin line and he was really good. Check it out and judge for your self. http://soilsgroup.com/bujinkan.tenchijin.yakima/
  22. I found out that, when doing a Tomoe Nage, if you pull real hard on the other guys gi as you go over backwards it drives their face into the ground instead of letting them land nicely on their back. I broke a guys nose with that move once! Another good one is the basic Judo hip throw. Instead of turning into them and throwing them to their front you step past them and throw them backwards over your hip. Do it right and you can land them on their head and break their neck. Kids, don't try this at home...
  23. If he is really torn up over this and he knows you can beat him in a fair fight he might not fight fare... He could bring a knife, plan an ambush or go Columbine on you. Watch your back for him and any friends he may have. Don't pull any punches. If he starts acting twitchy like he miight do something you might want to hit him first. Go with your gut as to how much of a threat you think he is. My opinion only.
  24. Get the book "Path Notes of an American Ninja Master" by Glen Morris. When you read the book you will be able to tell that Glen did too many drugs when he was young but he knows his stuff. Good meditation techniques.
