Here is a link to video clips from the movie: http://www.wing-chun.ws/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=239-ip-man-trailer-bio&catid=36-giatacomments&Itemid=58/ -
http://www.ipman-movie.com/ It is supposed to be really good. Does anyone know when it will be released on DVD or if it's going to make the rounds here in the States anytime soon?

Chi Sao
bluez4u2 replied to ryukasagi's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Multiple so called "trapping" is necessary to learn the contact reflexes necessary in Wing Chun. However, in a real situation there will not be any fancy multiple traps. The fight should be over in a matter of seconds. -

Chi Sao
bluez4u2 replied to ryukasagi's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
On the contrary, I think that the JKD school could teach you "the real deal" when it comes to trapping, but it just won't be as complex a system as it is in Wing Chun. It will still serve you well. Wing Chun is not complex...it all depends on who you learn from and how much patience you have. It can be learned in a relatively short period of time if you have a good sifu. Bad Sifu's stretch it out and make it more complex than it has to be. -
Chi Sao
bluez4u2 replied to ryukasagi's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I've never really done chi sao just heard of it, which is probally my problem. Yes that is the problem. The only way to learn is to train hard at it for a few years. If you don't have the patience for it then you might as well forget it. If you only want to learn a few trapping moves then go to a Jeet Kune Do school. They will show you techniques but not the real deal. -

How long have you been training in chi sao? It takes many months of training to even begin to get competent at it. It is definately not something that can be learned correctly with just a few lessons. -

That's why I train in a martial art that does not require me to be stronger, faster, younger. A martial art that actually enables you to get better with age and not worse. A martial art that helps my health and body and not messes it up. It's called Wing Chun.

Finger strikes
bluez4u2 replied to NightOwl's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Some of them look like finger strikes but they are really throat strikes with the edges of the forearm. They are slashing thrusts to the neck with the intention of hitting the jugular vein and carotid artery and the windpipe. -
Wing Chun in Action!
bluez4u2 replied to Hart's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
They were both clearly not professional fighters so it just goes to prove that Wing Chun is effective for the common person that trains in it against somebody coming to attack. Clearly in the street you might not encounter somebody with the so called kickboxers arsenal. -
Martial Arts Seminars--Worth The Time/Money?
bluez4u2 replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Depends on who is teaching them and how much time you spend discussing and practicing the techniques. I've heard that seminars with Dan Inosanto are a waste for beginners because he goes so fast. He tries to cover so much that you only get to spend 5 or 10 minutes on a technique before he moves on to something else. I've attended Wing Tsun seminars with Emin Boztepe and those are fun and you learn a lot. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or not. -
I've never heard of Mantis having chi sao like training but I could be wrong. I don't think that the styles would jive much in regards to energy drills like chi sao. I know southern Mantis adopts a similar stance but that's as close as it gets. Eventhough some techniques might look similar, I think the energy is different.

While this is something a hardcore fighter might do, I would not recommend it. Why would anyone want to intentionally want to do this to their own limbs? It just doesn't make sense to me. Learn a more intelligent martial art that does not require this kind of conditioning that could cause problems for you in the long run.

Wing Chun movies

Warriors II is pretty good IMHO. It shows a lot of WC training. It's supposed to be a fictional story of Leung Jan when he was older. quote="HG"]Are the last two any good? I've never heard of them. Prodigal Son is one of my favorite fight films. -
BJJ in a real fight
bluez4u2 replied to AceKing's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Don't get into that kind of situation is the best self defense but it could happen. Maybe walking to your car after a late night. The best thing to do is to be standing up. Going to the ground would be suicidal. The best way to deal with multiple attackers is one at a time. You line them up and never end up in the middle. You always have somebody between you and the next guy in line. -
I attended a seminar with Sifu Michael Casey who teaches Wing Tzun and it was a blast. He is a very talented Wing Tzun instructor and we got some great corrections on chi sao, forms and footwork. I was really impressed by how effortless he made everything look. When I touched hands with him for chi sao he was totally in control. I highly recommend his seminars and classes. He teaches out of Santa Monica Califormia and is affiliated with Emin Boztepe. Check out his website here: https://www.santamonicaselfdefense.com

origins of wing chun
bluez4u2 replied to muadib's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
You have to take these stories with a grain of salt. Nobody will ever know for sure who invented Wing Chun. It has evolved over many decades and stories have been embelished and retold. I for one don't care where it came from. All I care about is how well the concepts work. -

Learning wung chun
bluez4u2 replied to Master Bat's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
You can learn basic moves from a book or video but in order to get good at the applications against a live person you will need instruction from a competent instructor. Robert Applied Wing Chun - Austin, TX https://www.awtk.us
