Double round kicks (Olympic style)
ninjanurse replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
This kick will always be easier on a bag or against an opponent because you are actually using them/it to spring off of for the second kick. It may help to have a partner hold two kicking paddles so there is a slight resistance to spring off of-in a sense tricking the eye & body so that you build muscle memory to the rotation of the hip. Hope this makes sense. -

Sparring Techniques questions
ninjanurse replied to bushido_man96's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Here are my thoughts: Sparring drills for white belts and up. NO free sparring until after White (we start at the second belt level-orange). Some drills I use: Four corner blocking drills which are basically brush blocks low, middle, and high-adding a counter punch at orange belt. Sparring combinations such as front kick followed by turning kick, turning kick followed by turning kick, etc. At the orange belt level I start adding the counters to them, i.e., skip step back, back kick (as the counter to front kick, turning kick). I make the combinations and counters progressively more advanced as they go up in rank. Boxing drills with hand targets utilizing feints, ducks, etc., again with the complexity changing with belt rank. Bag drills using the same kicking combinations combinations on a stationary target. Lots of footwork! Forwards and backwards with a partner to mirror is always a good one. Out of time! Gotta go! Hope these give you some ideas! -
Have a question about Sa Jang
ninjanurse replied to cnada's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The obvious aside (so wonderfully explained by busido_man), the Taegeuk's progress from simple to complex; adding subtlties of movement and technique that the student discovers after many repetitions. -
Maybe it would get some of the competitors to get their hands up to block more?! At least I know that when that day comes my students will be well practiced in using their hands.

And always remember....respect is earned not demanded.

I agree with both schools of thought here but it really depends on the learner involved. For most, teaching a gross movement is easier and makes the student feel successful avoiding frustration for both them and you. Guided discovery is a very valid teaching technique, can be responsible for those "aha" moments that make you feel so good....and gives the student more ownership of the skill. Of course it depends on how you use this technique and your dedication to it because it does take quite a bit of forethought and analysis to achieve the result you want. I have used this technique in other areas of instruction and have found it preferable in most cases.

At present it's the Taegeuks only....but you never know what changes may be ahead. -

Do you set your leg down between kicks here? I assume this is with alternating legs, right? Are these done by spinning twice? IE, do one spin kick, then the other, setting down briefly between kicks? I assume this is without setting the foot down, right? The "pop up" is confusing to me here. Could you elaborate some more? Thanks, although it looks like I just made more work for you! I appreciate the reply! Turning kick, hook kick: No do not set leg down-hit one side of head then the other Sprint double turning kick:yes alternating legs, using the oppponents own body to spring off of for the second one Back kick hook kick-one spin, do not set foot down Wheel kick back kick-two spins (1st one returns you to your starting position), put foot down briefly Wheel kick turning kick-two motions (1st one returns you to your starting position), putting foot down briefly Consecutive turning kicks-do not set foor down Pop up back kick: pop up kicks are down from the guarding stance by bending the knees, jumping straight up (hence "pop") and executing the kick. The back kick requires a half spin in the air. Hope that clarifies!

The Palgwes are similar to the heians therefore I am particular to them. The taegueks seem...soft to me. But that may be just my systems interpretation. -
Rising Kick and Vertical Kick
ninjanurse replied to Mr Kilburn's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I agree - rising kick is a stretch that we use with the emphasis on the upswing-on axe kick the emphasis is on the down swing, and in my experience verticle kick is just a side kick done straight up which requires amazing flexibility. -
Congratulations! Sometimes the path we hesitate to take is the best one afterall.

Yang Style Tai Chi

While convalescing from my knee surgery I studied Yang Style. I enjoyed it a lot but now I am too busy with my own school to continue. -
I don't like peas, either. Peas are not a food and have no business in anybody's soup!

Agreed! Traditional does not mean that you can't be creative.

Fast & crisp but not powerful. It seemed very "light".
