It is best not to try to 2nd guess your sensei..it may come back to bite you! Each student and each kyu is judged differently...sensei looks at different things each time based on what he knows about the student and their training. I once took a test that consisted of only targeted middle punches in a horse stance...it was the most "intense" test I ever took-not physically, but mentally. Keep up the hard work... regardless of how easy this one was, there will be others that you will barely survive !

* DEJA VU!* This is certainly a well hashed out thread !! I say you should train anyone who is willing...after all, someone was gracious enough to teach you.

Kata are a tool to teach you the foundation of your art. There are many things hidden within them that will not become apparent to you until you reach a higher level of training. Remember, No matter what art you study you must have faith in it or it will not work for you.

Home Training for Jiu Jitsu
ninjanurse replied to Shorty's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I agree with Reklats, you ABSOLUTELY need to have a training partner-one that knows how to fall very well. While Jujitsu does have its striking arts, many of the techniques involve very quick and sometimes viscious takedowns. You cannot learn these techniques without an uke. Even an accomplished Jujitsuka needs to practice new techniques and combinations on someone to become proficient. Books are good resources for supplemental training and ideas, but nothing can replace the real thing! Keep looking for a training partner or, as already suggested, someone that will give private lessons. Good luck!! -
At my last grading I had to run 1.5 miles in under 13 minutes (pretty fast pace for an old fart!); then I had to do 50 each of situps, side cruches (both sides), back raises, leg lifts, and pushups..all in under 4 minutes. Then we did curriculum. My previous school tried to push you to the breaking point with various "activities" and made it more of a mental game. Often it required teamwork to help everyone finish-that made the experience of becoming a black belt more meaningful as you truely felt you were a member of the Black Belt Family-not just another club member. I much prefer the former schools way. But things can change......!!

How about "Sensei Says"? Great for self control, listening skills, knowledge of terminology, balance, etc. A good game of Dodge Ball breaks up the class too. We play with nerf balls and aim at the legs only so students have to jump high to "dodge" it. Here's another: Instructor puts two moves together, then each student adds on two more..the result is a custom class-made kata or demo that challenges creativity and physical skills.

WTF Questions?
ninjanurse replied to The Saint's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have always trained to punch to the face, however, in a WTF/Olympic style tournament it will not score a point. Just the rules of the game. -
I know the Shuey's and have seen them (and their students) in action. I have also had some of his students in my classes. Nice people!

Ernie Jr. has been doing muay thai for several years now, and yes, he is an incredible martial artist and an incredible person. Never met anyone nicer, expect for his dad, Ernie Sr. I have seen him perform and fight...awesome!!! -
Never broke anything but my thumb in my dojo.

How much should instruction cost?

Also keep in mind that sometimes people take for granted things they get for free. -

Start with learning a 360 roundhouse kick. Once you can land land consistently then start working on the 540. Basically it is a 360 but you land on the kicking leg-it takes a lot of rotation of the hips and speed. As an exercise you can practice regular round house kick landing on the kicking leg. Caution:this can be very hazardous to your knees!!!! If you don't know how to do 360 round: Start in a defensive stance-twist as if you are going to do a back kick but continue around. At the same time bring your rear leg through-brushing the top of your foot on the floor-and point the knee at your target. From this point-jump as if doing a front jump kick and bring the other leg around to kick. Is this confusing? I wish I could show you!! Hint: whatever leg you have leading in the defensive stance is the one that kicks.

Helping your school grow is as much about retention as it is intro's. There is nothing wrong with finding ways to motivate your students and keep them coming to class...even if it means EXTRA work for your instructors. Yes, a demo team is EXTRA work and is definitely not for the "lazy instructor".
