Those that do not give up have passed the hardest test of all. (Sorry Tommarker...I had to say it!!)

I like this thread and I agree with you Tommarker. In fact this is what I have been trying to get across to my 17 year old who is taking English 101 and can't understand why the teacher marks his papers down for using cliches ! I keep telling him that they are old news, say nothing about your own ideas/feelings, and people are just plain tired of hearing them. Thanks for starting this (hopefully) thought provoking thread!

Most tracks from any "2Unlimited" album will do. There are a lot of techno remixes that are good. Soundtracks from Spawn and Blade have some good stuff. Some stores sell cardio tapes that have songs with different beats per minute so you can choose the perfect speed. Mortal combat is used alot but there are other tracks on the soundtrack, such as Scorpions Theme, that don't get used as much. Listen to a lot of stuff and something with jump out at you eventually.

There is a good article posted in the articles section on kata. It may help.

Martial arts injuries: broken thumb, broken foot, torn hamstring, head injury, arthritis requiring surgery to fuse collapsing bone. Other: subluxation of thoracic vertebra/herniation of lumbar discs in a snowboarding "incident" (in the half pipe baby!!) which still gives me problems but the way I see it is... pain is relative to how much fun you want to have!!

Laurie, One drill we used to do with the little kids is this: Get strips of material (we used cut up belts or ribbon) approx. 10 inches long. Have them put the strip through their belt in the front. Pair them off , as in sparring, and let them try to get each others "flag". They can block, move around, feint, etc. but no hitting, kicking, or grabbing. Another one: Take a soft foam blocker and a piece of xray paper and use have the kids kick or punch the paper, and block the blocker-wherever you happen to put them. It is basically a targeting drill that mimics sparring-especially if you move around, back & forth, etc. Still another: Come up with "combinations" of techniques that they can do using their partner as a target. After they are comfortable with it, teach the counters to the techniques and have one partner counter the combination after the first one is done. Eventually they will be able to counter (with out contact of course since you aren't "teaching sparring" ) at the same time. Hope these help!! Heidi

Basically you just have to make yourself go out and do it when you don't feel like it. Soon it become a regular part of your training routine. I hate running too but I feel like something is missing when I don't get my runs in. To work up to a 5k ( or 10K) you can try this: walk briskly for 10 minutes then, run for 2 minutes, rest for 1 run for 2, rest for one, etc., until you get to 20 minutes (30 minutes total) Each 2-3 runs, increase the run time by 1 or 2 minutes until you can un for 20 minutes without rest. Then start adding minutes using the same formula. Don't worry about the mileage, only the amount of time you can run without stopping. Eventually you will work up to a 10K...and your speed will have increased dramatically!

First of all, I acknowledge that there are different jujitsu styles and different interpretations of what randori is. In my experience, jujitsuka do not "randori" in the sense of play as in sparring because of the visciousness and finality of many of the techniques. Certain techniques can be practiced as in judo randori and grappling or "ground play" is an exercise to learn body skills and mechanics of techniques, etc. however it is never practiced in a realistic manner as that would lead to the death of many ukes. Traditional styles never randori as in judo or sparring as in karate or TKD for just this reason. Modern/sport styles however do utilize such "play" in their practice and even go to sport jujitsu tournaments to "randori". When I say "be careful what you play with" I mean exactly that. It would be ill advised to play with lethal techniques with an inexperienced uke and/or do them as they are intended under fighting conditions for "play". It is a matter of philosophy in many cases, neither opinion being better that the other. Now if that isn't as clear as mud! -
One does not need karate in order to become a better person. Karate(martial arts) is but one of many paths that a person can take.

What made you do the Martial Art that you do?
ninjanurse replied to Metsubushi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The reasons why I started martial arts in the first place would be prime material for a good pyschology book . The reason I began to study the art I do now is this: I was a Nedan in Shotokan and was feeling that I could improve my fighting skills by become more athletic and flexible (I was tired of getting beat in kumite all the time!!!) Afterall, I had a school and students that needed a better example than I could provide at the time. In addition I had a young son who was quite the handful and didn't take well to Mom & Dad teaching him karate and being his parents too so....we decided to find a TKD school to take him to, with the idea that I would also benefit by developing fighting skills, ie. speed and flexibility. Well, needless to say, I never looked back....my husband took over the Shotokan school and I stayed with TKD. It was a challenge to me to learn and that's what drew me to it. Middle aged, slow, in-flexible.....now 10 years later, still middle-aged ( ), fast, flexible, and in better shape that my kids! My Shotokan background has served me well along the way...and I use the philosophies and principles I was taught everyday. It has made me a better TKD'ist...funny how I got what I wanted only the other way around! -
Welcome. What do I owe for that "seminar"?

Well, some of us get in those licks to the head anyway HEHEHEHEHE! How many times did I get warned at the test anyway Laurie?

Cash, Cash and Cash...
ninjanurse replied to Ben's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
WARNING! I figure I am paying for what I get out of something so if I am not getting what I want...I go somewhere else to play. Cost is relative to value. If you look at a Mcdonalds restaurant, you get a lot of food for a little money...a good value right? But....what is that crap you are eating!!!!??? " Mcdojos" come in all flavors, not just TKD. And not all TKD schools are Mc dojos. We need to stop placing labels on styles and start looking at what they have to offer each one of us. Some of us are ok with having clogged arteries and hypertension at the age of 50 and some of us would rather live long and healthy lives. Look at what you are getting for your money, not at how much money you are spending. I do not regret one cent that I have paid for martial arts training for myself or my family because I knew what I was getting and what we recieved was worth alot more than what we paid...many times over. We have also had the experience of taking martial arts for several years from a dojo that didn't charge money. What we received in the end cost us a lot more than any amount of money you could ever imagine...a truly devastating experience both mentally and spiritually. Ok...I got that out of my system now....I'll be fine now..
