Yellow Belt (2/10)

  1. (in refference to the 100 techs statement) I don't think that's what he meant. I believe what he is saying is be afraid of someone who uses properly developed techniques, as opposed to someone who uses a million barely-trained techniques.
  2. That's not true, unless the gloves are made of something solid. If what you are saying was true, what the hell is the point in professional boxing having gloves? Without gloves, people would be getting killed. Oh, and yeah, you kk fighters wouldn't stand a chance against a shotokan stylist I'm gonna go back to my hitting air, chambering my punches at the waist, minimal contact sparring and doing more kata than kumite now.
  3. Olympic vide games. If chess is recognized, then why not nintendo?
  4. All I have to say, and that is SUPARINPEI! (sp?) I'm not even a Goju stylist and I think a 108 move kata sounds awsome! (even though it's more like 60ish movements when compared to other styles).
  5. Thats what happens when you don't question "is where I'm at a McDojo"? God bless the internet and searching for poular opinions.
  6. Man, that is so *. If they were to fight under MMA rules (which, if Tyson really wants to feed his ego and gamble it all, they should) Tyson would get snapped! But therein lies Sapp's disadvantage, he would *need* Tyson on the ground quick. Without so much as one of Tyson's punches making a clean hit. And maybe not even that, as I know some boxers can use their punches upwards from the ground.
  7. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the god of all fight scenes? Someone came excruciatingly close with the Jackie Chan boob-flinging scene. Jackie Chan as Chun Li (and scrawny E.Honda) in City Hunter! Yeah, I'd have to say the Jet Li vs Generic Tall Blondex2 was a great scene. I liked the Jet Li vs UFC scene in Cradle 2 the Grave, as unrealistic as that was (Li would be tender turkey breast in real life), it was a really good scene. "I'm not Bruce".
  8. I have been training for about three and a half years in shotokan karate, as well as some other styles here and there in that time. But there's this feeling that I have never felt in my life. It is exciting. It drives me to train constantly and hard. It gives me joy in life. I have had this feeling only with one person while sparring. Now, in my short time of training, I have sparred with many people. Some great, some beginners. Never at my skill level. No one who is at a balanced level with me. They were either beyond me, or below me. This one person seemed the closest level with me. When I was taking shitoryu as extra training, there was this one person in class who had experience in other percussive styles. When we sparred at first, I was scared. I was not used to heavy contact. But I eventually got used to it. That is when I noticed this feeling. It was like a chessmatch! Every move was countered back and forth at high speed. There was no holding back (well, at least for me, as it did seem like they were holding back just a little) The strategy for the both of us changed direction on the stop of a dime. When sparring, it was like we were moving as one. I have since left shitoryu, and so has this person. I must say, I hold my technique and quality of kata in higher regards than my kumite. But I do enjoy kumite quite well, actually, and I have never been able to duplicate this feeling with anyone else. Some people come close, but it's never been the same. This person has changed the way I train. I constantly look forward to sparring with someone of equal skill, or the possibilty that we'll someday spar again. I want to become just as strong, if not stronger. The feeling gives me warm chills when a think about it. It makes me think positivly about the future, as well as training. Why do I feel like this? has anyone had a simmilar experience?
  9. I gotta say, there was this one Japanese chica in shitoryu, who trained in boxing and some other styles, and when I came in from shotokan, there wasn't really anyone there who could hold a candle to me (WHOOOOO!!!! I *LOVE* MAH EEEGO!). But this girl was different. This girl would kick my * on a regular basis with her muay thai-esque leg kicks to my thighs. There was something about her that drives me nuts to this day! I don't know if it was the fact that because of her, my training in shotokan has since skyrocketed (someday I want to spar with her again), or if it was the sweaty athletic beauty, but I was going CRAZY! Just two words I guess... DOMINATE MEEEE!!!~ But yeah, in the future I'm going to have to settle down with a serious practitioner who'll understand my need to train. Hell, I'd even settle for a TKD student (take it in jest, my Dojang brethren! )
  10. I'm toasted! I have a sore throat, runny nose, dizzy head etc. I want to train today! Wednesdays at the dojo are the best! I can train for like, 3 - 5 hrs, and I want to show an attidtude that says "yeah, I'm sick, but thats not going to stop me from training". But I can barely stand up. What should I do!? I want to show better spirit in my training, but I'm worried I won't even make it to the bus without collapsing. By the way, is 14 - 17 hours a week of training (8-10 hours of karate, 5 hours of weights, 1 hour of running) overdoing it? It's my passion, and usually the only things holding me back is the possibility of puking or "rectal" sickness. Help. I feel like I'm already dead.
  11. Yeah, I'm (primarily, right now at least) a shotokan student, and I've seen a few karate styles/places that were McDojo'd. I'm absolute crap where I go, not to mention I'm what is probably my sensei's biggest embarassment, but when I took time off to explore other styles, I was like a king. There were people supposedly training longer than me and *I* was doing better than them. I am *the* king of medeocrety!! Now THOSE places were McDo. (kyokushin is another story...) However, I have seen many more McTKD places like that
  12. You can make one. It's cheaper and more fun, plus it's YOUR makiwara. I have a few 8ft 4x4's just waiting to be cut and thrown into the ground once the winter ends.
  13. Yeah, I know. I heard about this place a looooong time ago, but never looked into it.
  14. OMG...how can people be saying that this was an argument? It was NOTHING, in comparison to what happens at the bullshido forums where people are doing the equivalent of screaming at each other like 4 year olds! (kinda makes you think about the mentality those people would have, considering the training they do). I thought Funakoshi was appointed those positions by both the JKA and Shotokai, and that he did not necessarily belong to either organization.
