  1. Btw, this is not a rip on TKD, but the instructor. So anyway, I am known by my Goju sparring partner as Mule because of my powerful kicks. So, I kid of wanted to go to a TKD school and see if I compared to them. I read online about a place with a 30-day trial. "SWEET," I thought. So I get to the place and the instructor is your typical guy who probably got picked on in school. I didn't judge. I shook his hand respectfully like I do when I meet anyone, and without knowing me, he clearly squeezes my hand as hard as he can instead of a respectful firm grip. Didn't bother me too bad, so I took my first free class. He then proceeded to pair me with a 6'6 2nd Dan black belt to spar with. I'm like, "ok, he is just pairing me with someone who has good control." WRONG. I saw him whisper to him in the corner while we were gearing up. Okay, I'm getting annoyed by this point. First thing he does is go for a full speed kick to the head. I caught it, and I said "This is supposed to be light contact." He then tries a spinning back kick, and I tackled him out of rage and started a ground and pound. They then told me not to come back. What the heck? Bad school, bad instructor, bad experience.
  2. Karate Kid 1, 2, 3, & Remake Never Back Down 1 & 2 Street Fighter Anime (All of them) Bloodsport 1 & 2 Kickboxer Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 Shaolin Chastity Kung Fu (So bad it is good) Best of the Best 1 & 2 Dead or Alive Kill Bill 1 & 2
  3. I know exactly what you mean. I went from a street fighting thug to karate point sparring in full gear. The two are miles apart. I'm used to going all out without fear of getting hit. I don't mind taking a few to get in close. As far as the dance fighting, I imagine it would be a little like fighting a kung fu master using drunken monk. I'd go for powerful low kicks.
  4. Since when are strength and honor mutually exclusive? Are the people who's job it is to protect law and order without strength and honor? Are the weak meant to be subjugated by the strong? Should my 60 year old parents be at the mercy of anyone 20 years old and strong? Should small women be at the mercy of large men? Does honor amount to a pinch of crap when your family is under attack? You are confusing real world combat for fairness in hierarchical combative sport. I was referring to thugs who carry guns around to scare or rob people. Of course anyone would defend their family with anything they had. Law enforcement, and those without a reasonable way to defend themselves need something like a firearm or pepper spray. Those people all know what category they are in. I choose not to carry a firearm for many reasons. Mostly, because I am confident in myself and have the means for self defense without excessive violence. Sorry, I should have been more clear in my last post.
  5. I have a large, muscular build, but i am pretty flexible. I would use a head kick if the person was under about 5'9 because my high kick height is about 5'7-5'8. I don't think someone of that stature would attack me since 6'2 200+ lbs. On someone tall i might kick to the sternum. Never below the belt unless they point a gun at me. Then I'll be angry. A gun is for someone weak and without honor. It should be used for hunting. I think the key is knowing your limits and being comfortable in your abilities. If you practice something everyday, there is no reason you couldn't do it in a street fight.
  6. My sensei makes us do the exercise, form, punch or whatever over and over until we get it right. The whole class does it until everyone gets it right if it is a group activity. I hate kids that goof around. As for a punishment, adults generally listen, so they may not hear the instruction correctly. No need to punish that. If a child just outright refuses to do something, you tell the parent he cant do anything until he wants to listen. Simple. Should an adult do that, there is no point in having him in the class anyway.
  7. Autographs from martial arts masters definitely outrank those of hollywood stars in my opinion. Not in cash value, but in the memory. You definitely have a different feeling when meeting a true master. In Hyuk Suh really is.
  8. My Brother is a 1st Degree Black Belt in Kuk Sool. He taught me everything he knows. I have to tell you, the only way to really get it right is to practice with a partner or at a school. A mirror helps a little, but to get the joint locking, pressure points and all of the important things, you will just have to get in to a school. I have read a lot of MA books and studied them well. I started at a dojo, and I had it all wrong. It wasn't far off, but it was enough to almost have to re-learn everything. The books, in my opinion, should be used for a supplement to what you have already learned. That is how I use mine now. Remember this one thing even if you don't listen to anything else I have said: A belt is what holds your gi together. Your belt color means nothing when you get to a real fight. Those are the exact words coming from a 9th Dan Goju Ryu Master. PS. I got In Hyuk Su's Autograph at a Kuk Sool Won tournament in '04 or '05. You couldn't meet a nicer man.
  9. I'm a little late on this thread, but I have a playlist I wanted to share. I listen to it when I am hitting the bag and/or jogging. Here it is in no particular order: Prepare Yourself (Johnny Cage Theme)- The Immortals Eternal Life (Rayden Theme)- The Immortals Mortal Kombat Theme- The Immortals Mortal Kombat Annihilation Theme- The Immortals The Next Door (Street Fighter IV Theme)- Exile Fight to Survive (Bloodsport Theme)- Stan Bush Streets of Siam (From Kickboxer)- Stan Bush Push it to the Limit- Paul Engemann Sun Doesn't Rise- Mushroomhead Dragula- Rob Zombie 99 Problems (Remix)- Jay-z/Linkin Park Second to None- Styles of Beyond/Mike Shinoda Fists of Rage- Kid Rock Knock a Hater Out- Savage Bombshell- Powerman 5000 Headstrong- Trapt Wave 'em Off- Will Smith Someday- Flipsyde Stronger- Kanye West/Daft Punk Passion- Blackalicious/Dialated Peoples False Pretense- Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Under the Knife- Rise Against the Machine Remember the Name- Fort Minor Yes, they are nearly all from a movie or video game, but without those movies and games, I probably wouldn't be a martial artist.
  10. Forget that. You could join a reputable MMA gym that is open 12 hours a day for that kind of cash. I pay $60/month for Goju Ryu. 2 Classes @ 2+ hours each per week. We also do Kempo and Boxing there. It is equipped for MMA as well, so in our down time before and after class we can train on our own.
  11. Teddy Roosevelt was a Christian, and he said "Never hit if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting, but never hit softly." The Bible, as even the most devoted Christians will agree, is very metaphorical and up to interpretation. That being said, if you truly believe it is the right thing to do, then I don't see how it could possibly be held against you in any afterlife that there may be. Now, my personal take in fighting is that if the other person engages you, you have no alternative. There is a gigantic difference between disarming with force and killing someone.
