White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. I love my teacher but what I like about this school is that they don't just teach one thing. You train in Karate for three months and then Jiu-Jitsu for three months. They also offer Judo, Tai Chi and weapons. It makes for a very well balanced training. I also take the cardio kickboxing.
  2. My grandson and I just competed in our first tournament on Saturday. We were in two competitions each. One was for our defensive techniques and the other was for our forms or Kata. There were about 17 in his age group and 7 in my age group which was 46+. I am almost 58 and all of the others were under 50. My grandson got 2nd place in both and I got 3rd in my techniques and 2nd in my Kata. Not bad for an old man!!
  3. Thanks everyone. They talked me into going to the tournament this Saturday and doing the same moves. Will let everyone know how it goes. I have to do 4 tournaments as part of becoming a black belt. So win or lose it is something that I have to do.
  4. I just took my Yellow belt Jui-Jitsu test on Saturday (Feb 16). They break the grading up into different belts since the room is small. I am usually in the back but when it came time for me to test my instructor but me in the front row. Then she had one of the black belts do the attacking. I was nervous but I didn't do anything wrong and felt pretty good about the test. After it was over my instructor called me up to the front before I left and she ask me did I know why she put me in the front row. I told her no. She said because I was her best student in my rank and she wanted the best up front. That was a great compliment coming from a 6 Dan Black Belt. The others all agreed I had a great test. Not bad for a 57 year old man I guess. Hope I can keep going and someday make black belt.
  5. You don't have to change from Karate to Jiu-Jitsu. You can stick to either. You may have to change the night or the place where you take it. I like the change. Also when you are in Karate or Jiu-Jitsu you will still do refreshing on both. It is a good mix.
  6. In this school they will train for three months in Karate and then three months in Jiu-Jitsu then three months in Karate. There are three schools so if you want to stay in Karate and not do the Jiu-Jitsu then you can switch schools and not take the Jiu-Jitsu. There are also classes in Judo and Tai Chi. It's really cool because you can go to as many classes as you want. I only go twice a week and just stay in the three month cycle.
  7. I got my certificate and Green Belt last night. I took the test on Saturday. It was pretty cool. Here is what the school teaches: Japanese and Korean Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, and Tai Chi, as well as other physical activities such as kick boxing, grappling, boxing, and wrestling.

    Board Breaking

My daughter took a video of me breaking the board. When I watched it I noticed on the first kick I pulled kicked and then pulled back. The black belt holding the board told me to remember to kick thru the board. The next kick broke the board and my foot landed next to his. Another thing I noticed when watching this was that everyone in the room stopped to watch me. There were others breaking boards at the same time but they all stopped to watch me. The only reason I can think why they did this was that I was the oldest one breaking boards. Not to bad for 57 I guess!!
  9. This may sound stupid but I am not sure. I got started in this school with my grandson. He started and then wanted me to do it with him. I know they say it is a Japanese style. I am not sure if the is correct. I will have to find out.
  10. I am testing for the first time. I am testing for green belt. Wish me luck!

    Board Breaking

We were showed three different ways to break boards. Hammer fist...front kick and side thrust kick. Then we could decide which two we wanted to use. It is not as easy you some think to break a board. The hammer fist was easy. For my other board I picked front kick. The first kick it did not break. The guy holding the board reminded me to kick thru the board at his chest. When I did that it broke. You have to hit it with the ball of your foot or it will not break.
  12. My grandson and I attend our first board breaking seminar. We broke two boards each. One with a hammer fist and one with a front kick. Pretty cool.
  13. Thanks. There is a lot to remember. Can't imagine what it is going to be like once I get out of being a white belt!!
  14. I hope 29 is not to old. I just started and I am 57!! Wish me luck!
