  1. I'm definatly not judging the style, I've heard many fantastic things about it and would like to seek out a different dojo for it. In the dojo I'm currently studying with (GKR) They are very helpful and friendly, hence why I have stayed
  2. It was in an enviroment in which I didn't feel as though I could ask the other karate-ka. On top of that, he spoke very fast and in Japanese only, making it extraordinarily dificult to keep up and understand what he wanted me to do
  3. I just finished a kyokushin class and have to say that I'm really disappointed. I liked the style, it seems really interesting yet the instructor was horrible. He didn't think of explaining anything to me, not the moves nor the dojo etiquette. It would have been fantastic if there was more then one instructor and they helped you out. I'll have a look at a few more styles, including muay thai and see if any seem more attractive
  4. What are you thoughts on the karate club Go-Kan-Ryu?
  5. Yamesu, I'm checking out a kyokushin class tomorrow and I was just wondering how you find it, do you enjoy it? Is it good?
  6. Congratulations! It sounds like you did fantastic. I'm considering entering a tournament soon, but it appears you have more experience then I do which makes me wonder if it is such a good idea. (I've been training for 3-4 months) Sparring is essential to self defense as it teaches you how to actually fight someone rather then standing in line punching air. The amount of sparring your dojo does is perfectly fine though, you have many years of karate training to come and will surely become fantastic as sparring as time goes on. I'm curious, after your 9 months of training what grade are you? I'm an 8th Kyu.
  7. Thanks, I will soon be checking out some muay thai and kyokushin classes Hopefully I find these classes useful and wish to continue
  8. Thanks for the responses guys! Does anybody know of a karate club that is full or semi-contact in Australia? I've had a look around on the internet but they all seem to be in different states rather then the ACT.
  9. Thank you for this response, I found this really helpful. "Rush them with your jab/reverse punch" When you say this, do you mean to do this technique multiple times in a row?
  10. I'm currently studying karate with Go-Kan-Ryu which is a non-contact style. I'm starting to think that Full or semi-contact would be more benifitial as I would learn to take a hit and learn how it feels to hit. Should I change to a contact club? Can you reccomend any that are in Australia, thanks.
  11. I'm considering entering into a tournament and would like some combinations to work on in the meantime. What are some good ones? I tend to use the jab/reverse punch alot. (I am an 8th Kyu)
  12. I train with GKR and I personally believe it to be fantastic. They teach you practical was to defend yourself. I don't understand all of the criticism GKR gets, it is a great style and is not as expensive as other styles, in fact I believe it to be quite, which makes me wonder why people refer to it as a "Mcdojo" All that matters is if you enjoy the style/club you are with and feel as though you are learning.
  13. Go-Kan-Ryu White White (yellow tip) Yellow Yellow (orange tip) Orange Green Blue Red Brown Brown (1 black tip) Brown (2 black tips) Black
  14. I started doing karate roughly 3 months ago and I feel confident performing what little katas I know infront of other people. I also would like the opportunity to spar someone as a lower grade before it becomes too intense (As I assume it would be when a higher grade) Do you think entering a tournament as an 8th Kyu is a good or bad idea? How is it that I sign up for a tournament and what is the process like? What are some good combinations for sparring? I tend to use the jab/reverse punch quite alot and am attempting to use a variety of combinations.
