KUMITE - Sparring with a partner. This part of Karate training allows students to practice and perfect techniques for attacking, defending and counterattacking with realism but in relative safety. There are seven main types of kumite, they are as follows : 1. KIHON IPPON KUMITE Basic One Step Sparring 2. GOHON KUMITE Five Step Sparring 3. SANBON KUMITE Three Step Sparring 4. KEASHI IPPON KUMITE Two Step Sparring 5. JIYU IPPON KUMITE Semi Freestyle Sparring 6. OKURI JIYU IPPON KUMITE Two Step Semi Freestyle Sparring (Second Step Free) 7. JIYU KUMITE Freestyle Sparring Good Etiquette and respect for your training partner must be shown at all times during Kumite practice. When practising Kihon (basics) in the Dojo a student should step forward with speed and power, Kiai loudly to show good spirit. When practising Kumite in the Dojo a student should step backwards to show respect and thanks to the partner for assisting them in their training. Kumite practice starts and finishes with both partners facing each other in Musubi-Dachi ( Informal attention stance, heels touching and toes turned out at 45%, hands open and touching the outside of the legs ) and both partners Rei (bow). 1. KIHON IPPON KUMITE ( Basic One Step Sparring ) Method On the command Yoi (ready) both partners, moving their right foot, move into Hachiji-Dachi ( Open Leg stance, heels shoulder width apart toes turned out at 45° angle ). The student who is to attack first steps back gedan-barai ( right or left side, as instructed ) and announces the speed, level and technique of attack. The defender concentrates his or her mind on the techniques to be practiced and acknowledges the attacker with the word Oss! The attack should be focused on the designated target with good spirit and control, ensuring that the technique is correctly executed (Stance, Breathing and Kime). The defender must show good spirit and control when blocking, ensuring breathing and stance is correct and must kime the block before the counterattack is executed. Both partners should remain in position and in a state of Zanshin (Total Awareness, readiness) until the instructor calls Yamea! (Stop) and Enyoi! (Relax) When practising with a partner you are responsible for their safety, good control must be exercised at all times! Aims To allow students to practice punching, kicking, striking and blocking techniques with an opponent and to feel the resistance to these techniques when directed at another human being. Demonstrates the importance of correct distance, timing, movement and kime to the techniques practiced. 2. GOHON KUMITE ( Five Step Sparring ) Method Begins as Ippon Kumite, but attacker steps forward five times attacking to the nominated target area and the defender steps back and blocks five times, after the fifth block the defender counter attacks with gyaku zuki ( Kiai only when attack is speed and power ). Gohon Kumite is usually practiced slow to count, fast to count, and then speed and power no count. When practising speed and power the attacker should not move forward rhythmically, but should plan his attacks to catch the defender off guard. The defender should not move backwards until the attack is underway. With all types of Kumite both partners must concentrate fully and approach the training seriously, as any slight lack of concentration could cause an accident. Aims The aims are the same as Ippon Kumite. They also give the student practice in changing stance, gaining distance whilst moving backwards and demonstrate the importance of correct stance and distance in all techniques. 3. SANBON KUMITE ( Three Step Sparring ) Method The method is basically the same as Gohon Kumite but there are only three attacks. Sanbon Kumite is often practiced using three different attacking techniques, i.e. Jodan, Chudan and Mae-geri or Jodan, Chudan and Kekomi, etc. The defender must execute the correct block for the attacking technique used and counter attack after the third block. Aims The aims are the same as Gohon Kumite, but with the added difficulty of the differing attacking and blocking techniques the level of stress in the training is increased. This helps to improve the "thinking skills", i.e. reaction, memory, concentration, etc. 4. KEASHI IPPON KUMITE Two Step Sparring Method On the command Yoi (ready) both partners, moving their right foot, move into Hachiji-Dachi (Open Leg stance, heels shoulder width apart toes turned out at 45° angle). The student who is to attack first steps back gedan-barai (right or left side, as instructed) and announces the speed, level and technique of attack. The defender concentrates his or her mind on the techniques to be practiced and acknowledges the attacker with the word Oss! The first student attacks to the designated target area with the correct technique, the other student steps back, blocks and then steps forward to attack, the first student steps back to block and finishes with a counterattack. The attacks should be focused on the designated target with good spirit and control, ensuring that the technique is correctly executed (Stance, Breathing and Kime). The defender must show good spirit and control when blocking, ensuring breathing and stance is correct and must kime the block before stepping forward to counterattack. Aims To allow students to practice punching, kicking, striking and blocking techniques with an opponent, whilst moving forward and backwards and helps to improve timing, distance and total awareness. Keashi Ippon Kumite introduces the student to the idea of seizing the initiative and turning defence into attack. 5. JIYU IPPON KUMITE Semi Freestyle Sparring Method After the initial bow and the command Yoi (ready) both partners step back Gedan Barai and assume the free style position (Jiyu Kamae). In the free style position the student should be relaxed, but on guard, ready and able to change stance, move body position, advance or retreat and be able to defend themselves from any attack using arms and legs to block and strike. The stance should be shorter than normal front stance, with the back leg slightly bent and the weight distributed evenly between front and back legs allowing the body to be moved backwards or forwards easily and quickly, straightening the bent leg gives added speed and distance to the body movements. The arms should be held in a position where they can cover or block an attack whilst being ready to punch or strike an opponent. The student who is to attack first announces the speed, level and technique of attack. The counterattack should be executed and then pulled back fully (i.e. gyaku zuki, the student should kime the punch and then withdraw the fist to the hip, the opposite hand should be thrust forward forcefully). Both partners should remain in position and in a state of Zanshin (Total Awareness, readiness) until the instructor calls Yamea! (Stop) and Enyoi! (Relax) Aims Introduces students to sparring from a more realistic fighting stance and encourages more Tai-sabaki (body movement). Improves Maai (distance), using the bent legs to propel the body forwards or backwards over greater distances), timing and Zanshin (poise and complete control, total awareness). 6. OKURI JIYU IPPON KUMITE Two Step Semi Freestyle Sparring ( Second Step Free ) Method As in Jiyu Ippon both students start from Kamae and the first student announces the target area or technique to be used. The second student focuses his mind on the block and counter to be used and replies Oss! After the defender has executed his block and counter, the attacker carries out a second attack without announcing his intended target or technique. The attacker should choose a target area and technique that has the best chance of success and that puts the defender at the biggest disadvantage, making defence difficult. The defender has to execute an effective block and counterattack, pulling back after the counterattack to Kamae and maintaining Zanshin (total awareness). Students must show good spirit and control, ensuring breathing and stance is correct and must kime all techniques. Aims Ochri Jiyu Ippon is the first step to free style sparring. Students are encouraged to look for the advantage, an opening to attack, defending against the unexpected, looking for the best position after the defence to execute the counterattack. Zanshin ! 7. JIYU KUMITE Freestyle Sparring Jiyu Kumite (freestyle sparring) should only be practiced by students who have a good knowledge of Kihon (the basic techniques) r Maai (distance), timing, co-ordination and, most importantly, good control. Freestyle should only be practiced under strict supervision and in an organised and controlled manner. Method The instructor (referee) should explain the rules and the commands he will use to start and stop the bout, and will ask both students if they understand. He will emphasise that there should be no contact and that both students must listen for his commands and obey immediately. The students Rei (bow) to the instructor and to each other and on the command take up Kamae. On the command Hajime (begin) both students should move to put themselves into the best position to attack, whilst guarding against a surprise attack from the opponent. Good spirit should be shown at all times, Kiai all attacking techniques, and execute all techniques correctly, paying particular attention to breathing, stance, timing and Kime. Aims To improve control, technique, timing, concentration and total awareness under the stress of real combat. In time, and with a lot of practice, all techniques should become "motor responses". In defence or on the attack the techniques should happen without the need for you to think of the specific move. The Chinese and Japanese call this the state of "No Mind". Summary Kumite should be considered as a small but important part of your overall Karate training. Without a good knowledge and understanding of Kihon (basics) and Kata (formal exercise) you cannot improve in Kumite. Kumite is a relatively new part of Karate training, when Master Gichin Funakoshi first introduced Karate to Japan he taught only Kihon (basics) and Kata (formal exercise). Kumite as it is practiced today did not exist. It was only later when his son started teaching and Karate was being taught in the universities that Kumite and competition Karate became popular. I would like to finish with quotations from two masters: The importance of kata to kumite cannot be overemphasised. If techniques are used unnaturally or in a forced way, posture will break down and if the kata techniques become confused when applied, no improvement in kumite can be expected. In other words, improvements in kumite depend directly on improvements in kata, the two go together like hand in glove. It is a mistake to emphasise one at the expense of the other. Masatosh, Nakayama 9th Dan In Kata, we learn with an imaginary opponent, only the body movements and the use of a wide range of techniques of attacks and blocks. In Kumite, we learn to apply, against one or many opponents, all the techniques found in Kata. Thus Kumite is the practice of Kata with Maai. The importance of Kata to kumite in Karate-Do can be compared to the two wheels of a cart. GoldDragon

The History of Hung Gar This section is dedicated to hung gar it's history, forms and training method well all be here. HISTORY Historically, Southern China has been dominated by five Kung Fu styles: Hung, Lau, Choy, Lay and Mok. Hung Gar is most widespread and popular of these.Gar means clan or family in Cantonese, whereas Hung refers to the family name of the man who invented the system, Hung Hei Goon, a Fukien tea merchant. According to legend, Master Gee See,a monk of the Fukien Shaolin Temple, taught Hung the Shaolin Tiger Style. Hung being a curious man, always sought to improve his skills. He added to his Tiger Style elements from his wife's White Crane system, movements from the Dragon, Snake, and Leopard forms, and techniques from the Five Elements Fist.He modified and expanded his Tiger Style to develop a system better balanced in long- and short-range application,a system which better reflected his own character and skills -- Hung Gar. Hung Hei Goon developed a reputation for being a fighter of great skill and was known as "The Southern Fist".The essence of Hung Gar can be found in its name. "Hung" means to "stand tall with integrity." Hung Gar tenents stress honesty, directness, iron will-power and righteousness. Southern China is a wet land of great rivers and agriculture. Trade and transportation center around its rivers. Its population is greater than that of Northern China and its cities more crowded.Hung Gar is well adapted to close quarter fighting in small, crowded alleyways or in wet, slippery rice fields. Hung Gar training emphasizes strong stances, iron-hard blocks, low snapping kicks, ambidexterity, deceptive hand techniques and power, all geared for close-range techniques. The low, strong stances conform well to encounters on barges and rafts. Low snapping kicks are well suited to wet and slippery ground. Hung Gar hand techniques stress ambidexterity and use simultaneous blocking and striking. The blocking maneuvers of Hung Gar were well-known and feared.Opponents often thought twice before challenging a Hung Gar practitioner, for if a block could numb an attacker's limb, how much more painful must a strike be? The training is grueling and highly demanding and fits well the student who is physically strong and compact, of muscular build and who possesses great endurance. Legends depict of Hung Gar students who stood in horse stance the length of time an incense stick burned down completely, anywhere between one to three hours. The Hung Gar curriculum includes empty-hand, weapon and sparring sets. The sets include traditional Hung Gar forms, supplemented by sets from other systems. Each form builds on the basic skills of Kung Fu but each emphasizes a different ability. There are seventeen weapon sets, covering the four basic weapons - staff, broadsword, spear and straight sword - as well as more exotic weapons, including the long pole, hoe, double butterfly knives, trident, long handle knife, Tiger Head Shields, bench and round shield. The sparring sets complete the Hung Gar curriculum. These sets include hand and weapon sets, such as the Tiger and Crane Sparring Set,empty hand versus the horse-cutting knife, trident versus butterfly knives,Tiger Head Shield versus broadsword, and the three person staff combination. Kung Ji Fook fu Kuen (Conquering the tiger Form) Fu Hok Shoeng Ying Kuen (Tiger Crane Form) Sup Ying Kuen (Ten Form Fist) Tid Sin Kuen (Iron Thread Form) Kung Ji Fook Fu Kuen (Conquering the Tiger Form) The foundation of all other Hung Gar forms. The transliteration of Kung in this specific instance refers to the Chinese character I and is therefore sometimes interpreted as the "I Shaped Subduing the Tiger Form ". There are many other translations: "Cross Tiger Fist Form" and "Conquering the Tiger Form". This is the oldest form in Hung Gar Kung Fu believed to have been developed by Hung Hei Goon after his intense training with his Sifu Abbot Gee Sing. This form teaches the practitioner the basic stances and builds his foundation through emphasis on the horse stance as well as developing and enhancing one's breathing capacity. This is the longest form in Hung Gar and is one of the hardest. It is while the student is learning this form that his character, persistence and determination to learn the system are assessed. His patience is also put to the test time and time again with this form. Fu Hok Shoeng Ying Kuen (Tiger Crane Form) This is the most famous and popular of the Hung Gar forms and is said to have been developed by Wong Fei Hung. This form stresses the cultivation of the Tiger and Crane as well as a balance between the two complementing each other in the form. While the Tiger is utilized for teaching one to refine his physical entity (power), dynamic tension breathing skills and courage. The Crane develops whipping power, evasive tactics, waist movement, and calmness of the spirit and balance. The Tiger form of training provides the hard or external methods of Hung Gar while the Crane form provides the soft or internal balance between the two. Sup Ying Kuen (Ten Form Fist) This is an advanced form featuring the five traditional animals of the Shaolin Temple, the Dragon, Snake, Leopard, Tiger and the Crane. It also contains the five elements (wood, water, metal, earth & fire) found in Chinese philosophy Each of the animals teaches the practitioner an important lesson. The Dragon teaches internal training in Hung Gar. It is the first animal represented in the form. The Dragon is a spiritual and supernatural creature and transcends from the easily understood real world. The power of the Dragons strength can appear and disappear at will. Its domain is therefore internal power and spirit. The Snake trains the fingers and is for striking the vital points on an opponent's body. It is utilized in the training and manipulation of Chi (Vital Energy). It teaches pinpoint hitting of vital areas. The Practitioner focuses his Chi all the way up to his fingertips in order to deliver and generate power correctly. The Tiger is designed to strengthen the constitution and has a fierce spirit. This animal emits ferocity, courage and strength since it is the strongest of the animals. Dynamic tension, vigorous and strong hand techniques in the form of Tiger claws is what characterizes this animal. The Leopard is the embodiment of speed and power. It has swift penetrating attacks. The Leopard fist strikes always involve more than one strike and always at extremely quick speeds. The Crane stresses balance, quick foot movements, pecking, hooking and deflecting movements. It is a lively animal whose essence can be seen in its beak attacks and pecking motion. The Metal element involves a strong slow stretching power. The entire arm is used as a solid unit. The elbows are always bent slightly in this movement, as there is less susceptibility to the arms being broken. The Wood element is a simultaneous block and strike and is the shortest arm movements in Hung Gar. This element teaches long and short arm sequences. The Water element are strikes which are of a constant nature. A series of battering blows similar to the pounding of ocean waves upon the shores. It is the swinging motion of the practitioner's arms which are the source of the Water element's power. The Fire element is characterized by a straight punch. Its more common name is the Sun Punch because the fist forms the character Sun in Chinese characters. The sun is a fiery mass. The Earth element is the last of the elements and closes the form. It develops a strong foundation. (Boxing is rooted in the feet, developed in the legs, directed by the waist and is expressed through the hands). Since the practitioner's foundation is so strong, he is capable of delivering some very destructive blows. The Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Leopard and Crane are said to give the practitioner five ways to manipulate and use his strength while the Wood, Fire, Gold, Water and Earth elements are said to give him five ways to generate and transform the power in each of these forms. Tid Sin Kuen (Iron Thread Form) This form was created by Tid Ku Sarm, one of the best martial artists in the history of China. He was one of the famous Ten Tigers of Kwangtung. Through the years he passed his knowledge of the set down to one of his students, Wang Fei Hung. This form is the highest set taught in the Hung Gar system. It takes the practitioner into the realm of internal Kung Fu training, which is the ultimate goal in Chinese martial arts. Tid Sin's limited footwork is based solely upon the movements and spirit of the Dragon coupled with vibrating sounds and various intonations of breath control with twisting movements which stimulate the internal organs. Each emotion (Happiness, Anger, Sadness, Sorrow and Fear) is said to be translated into a breathing tone producing different vibrations, which affect different organs. From the breathing sounds comes a strong type of power, which is emitted from within the practitioner. There are twelve types of training methods contained in this form. They are Hard, Soft, Lineal, Isometric Contractions, Linking, Dividing, Supporting, Stationary, Circular Transition, Determination, Exactness and Immobilization. These twelve types of training are designed to control and improve the internal functions of the organs. It is a dynamic tension exercise used to increase the flow of Chi throughout the body. It is an efficient means of body building and stamina development. The combined pugilism of the Tiger and Crane styles, otherwise known as Hung Gar Kung Fu, is a southern Shaolin system designed to strengthen the physical constitution (the bones of the body) as well as the sinews (breathing and spirit). It is a most respected system whose training concepts are steeped in morality, rigidly traditional and uncompromising in preserving the original standards of Shaolin Kung Fu. Each hand form and technique in hung gar stresses stance. Once you master the stance all else well follow. Now to continue the history of hung gar. hung hei gwun learned shaolin tiger boxing from abbot gee sim see.hung started learning kung fu after the ming government was overthrone and replaced by the ching.hung who's original name was jyu but he renamed his self after the first ming emporer hung wu,hung became a laymen in the sil lum temple and after abbot gee sim sim see watched him practice, seen that hung's skill was exceptional and took him on as his diciple and trained hung in the tiger style of kung fu.how did hung get to the temple and why? Well hung was beleived to de decended from royalty and was well off (rich or close to rich)he became a tea merchant, after a fight with some ching offial's hung became a outlaw and fled to the southern sil lum (shaolin) temple there he learned shaolin kung fu and be came one of the sil lum sup ghiet(shaolin ten best) not only was hung one of them but he was beleived to be the best(fong sai yue was also one of the sil lum sup ghiet). after he graduated from the shaolin temple and returned to the circular world hung married a women named fong wing chun(not to be confused with yim wing chun the creator of wing chun kung fu) Thought all of you would enjoy this:))

Thai Boxing Started in 1650 when King Naresuen of Siam was captured by the burmese, he was offered freedom if he could defeat Burmese champions. He successfully defeated 12 of the finest Burmese boxers and became a national hero. This made Thai Boxing a national pastime. The actual origins may date back further but this is unknown due to the Burmese book burnings in 1776. Thai Boxing is an adaptation of the Thai military arts. In peacetime the weapons of the battlefield were laid down and the soldiers would fight empty hand to keep their edge. At that time there were few rules, no rounds, and no weight classes. In this time period boxers fought barefooted, their fists and forearms wrapped in hemp rope and combat was extremely brutal. Training methods were vast and varied. Banana trees were kicked, kneed, and elbowed, softening the tree until it could be wrapped on the trainers arms for kicking. This is where the unique creation of the Thai pad got it's start. Thai Boxing also find much of it's root's in Buddhism. People who see Thai Boxing for the first time often wonder about the pre-fight ritual that takes place before every authentic Thai fight. This ceremony called the "Ram Muay," is a spiritual ceremony which seals off the ring from outside influences, pays homage to gods, parents, teachers, loved ones, king and country. A great deal of significance is placed on the Ram Muay since it displays the spirit and heart of the fighter. Both the Ram Muay and the fight itself are accompanied by music from a four piece ensemble. The pace of the fight is often dictated by the music played on the side of the ring. Because the Thais quickly adapt to anything which may give them an edge, Thai Boxing has evolved towards greater efficiency for centuries. Most recently they have adapted various Western Boxing techniques, training methods, and strategies to their already formidable tools. In the past 50 years Thai Boxing has enjoyed even greater popularity. Modern western style gloves, weight classes, and 3-minute rounds have been adopted. Because of the rigorous nature of it's testing ground and the directness of it's techniques, Thai Boxing and Thai Boxers are some of the most highly respected martial artists throughout the world. * Thought you would enjoy this * *bows in respects* GoldDragon Martial Arts ( Ist Degree Black Belt)

Hello all, and greetings MortalDragon. So good to see all you in here 'kicking' and 'punchin' away on the keyboard as you make some typos (lol) I was so happy. I had some tough competion..Got kicked in the head, but....LOL! Like I said in my last post, we all are not perfect, but yet still learning. One of my students were sad the day we returned to our Dojo while we were throwing a Party and one of my students came with tears in his eyes and asked me,"Why are we throwing a party when I didnt even place in my divison?" I smiled and placed him on my lap and said," This party has nothing to do about winning or loosing fights, its about how well YOU did. Sure, we all stumble and fall at times but down inside we are all winners." He smiled, hugged my necj and thanked me. After he left my office he went to the bag and was doing some moves with a smile upon his face:) ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------Well, I better stop babbiling before you all hate me. (smiles) I will post when I can. Till then, stay strong, and remain focused on your goals. ~*~*~*~GoldDragon Martial Arts*~*~*~ :karate: :karate:
