  1. The boxing guard blocks "only" the face just as much as the karate guard blocks "only" the mid-section.
  2. Its still very possible to "cover" the face without blocking vision, or at least have your hands in a high position where the face can more readily be protected.
  3. So you find it easier to hit smaller moving targets than the largest part of the body(mid-section)?
  4. Just a couple of points: I practise for self defence among other reasons. From my experience i have noticed that most fights start from closer than this hand position is designed for. Also in a self defence situation most attacks are usually directed at the head, not the mid section. My reasoning is simply this, i would rather protect my head and move my hands to protect my mid section if needed. As opposed to protecting my mid section and having to move my hands to protect my head.
  5. Sounds like a good story. Do go on....
  6. Do any of you see an issue with training in karate and using the boxing guard?
  7. I like using joint-locks to setup strikes and strikes to setup joint-locks. Its all relative.
  8. I know a few people who think like this, until i kick them in the nutz. But seriously, everything is fair in a real fight. I remember my dad said to me once "Son i wouldnt mind getting you to do boxing for a while so you can learn to use your hands, people dont appreciate getting kicked in the groin." So he is one who thinks like that, even though he used to do karate. But i really dont think the person is going to appreciate getting hit, nomatter what the target.
  9. Just adding to that comment by aefibird. My instructor always says that even if you do the wrong technique never do it half hearted. So always do your best with each and every technique, even if you know its the wrong one.
  10. Kime means 'focus point'. Its basically the point in time, usually at the end of the technique where all your power is focused. I doubt you will be judged on your kime(or lack thereof) in your first grading, but keep it in mind for future training.
  11. If its not 2 much trouble.
  12. Do you have any pictures of your stance AngelaG??
  13. Wow, after 7 years of training with them you think they would atleast notify you about the closure. Anyway, goodluck with your search for a new dojo.
  14. Hey everyone, This question is for the shotokan guys in particular. http://www.zanshin-shotokan.com.au/gallery/nswdojo/sylvania/pages/karate-006_gif.htm What are the reasons for using this hand position in shotokan sparring? Are there any advantages in using this and not a guard more like a boxer would use that protects the face? Looking at this picture it appears there head is left wide open. Would a shotokan karate-ka use the same hand position in a self-defence situation? Also any other styles who use a different hand position please link to pictures or describe. Thanks.
  15. Easy to say but sometimes hard to do : RELAX. Just remember, you wont be doing anything new at the grading. Its just a repetition of all the training you have already done. If you have worked hard in your training you wont have any problems. Oh, and good luck.
  16. There are lots of kenpo guys/girls on this forum, they are actually flooding this section with posts so they can have there own section on the forum.
  17. If you go to your local dentist you can have them made specifically for your teeth.
  18. It depends on HOW the arts are taught, if they are taught in seperate classes but at the same training hall then its not really mma. If they are taught in the same class i.e. "mixed" together, then that would be mma. If you cant work out whats best it would be a good idea to ask the people your making the site for. Hope that helps.
  19. I agree with this, the idea that you are fighting multiple opponents at the same time is not the purpose of kata. Its ok to visualise that your fighting one guy for some of the moves, then you move onto another guy and another. This may well work for multiple opponents if there attack corresponds with the sequence of the kata, but usually its better to breakdown your kata with the idea of fighting one person. That way if you ever have to face multiple opponents (good luck to you) you can face each guy ideally (but not likely) taking parts from different kata.
  20. If you dont like learning forms and you do a style that teaches them ask your instructor to show you some applications, if your still no satisfied change schools. I personally place alot of importance in kata training.
  21. I think you pretty much answered your own question >>>
  22. Theres no shame in being beat-up by a white belt.
  23. Depends what country your in but you may need to register it has a business and get insurance which can be costly at times.
  24. Find a training space and start advertising.
  25. He may be hit by twice the power of your kick, IF it lands. But this leaves you with half the balance you would have had if you didnt kick. I dont think thats a risk i would be willing to take.
