  1. Zaine is correct monkeymorgan. Your health takes precedence over your Martial Art, surely? Sorry to say this but you will not be able to do much of ANYTHING if you are a cripple for the rest of your life. A fact which your Sensei does not seem to take on board for some odd reason.
  2. Congratulations to you!
  3. Many and much congratulations to you on your successfull grading!
  4. I go to two classes, but the same school. My Sensei in the MAIN school says i should grade. The Sensei in the SUB school says i am not good enough yet to grade. At the risk of causing an argument with the both of them this coming Monday night-05/03/12, i will NOT be turning up to grade. For the record, i am only a white belt and i dont think i have done enough either, though i have been to every class at the both schools since i started last year. I have been told that a student does not have to grade if they do not want to--for the ''qualified'' amongst you on this forum, is this true?
  5. I have to agree with you, part of being a martial artist for me is being humble. Buying your belt before your test just assumes too much and if I figured out a student did that I don't think that I would pass them. I agree with you both, its not something i would contemplate. Its not just about incuring the wrath of the Karate Gods (!), as another poster says, but there are too many variables with it, and with life in general also. Accidents, illnesses, long-term unemployment etcetc. These things and more may neccessitate taking a break, or long breaks, away from Training, some things may neccessitate having to give it all up for good! I'm not saying don't, just saying its not something i would do. But whatever floats yer boat, floats yer boat!!

  8. When i read your post on page one Sensei8, i did not bother to read the other 8 pages! What you wrote said it all to be honest!
  9. Not graded just yet, but am about to in March. I have to say though, not all dojo's are 'mc'dojo's! Yes there ARE unscrupulous ''Sensei's'' out there who operate in this way, and take as much money as they can and teach nothing whilst giving out 'candy belts' and false praise. But there are SOME decent and hard-working Sensei's out there in different parts of the world who are not really interested in the money, but give of their time gladly to help and to teach others what THEY have learn't from those who have trod the Martial Way before them.
  10. Club: Sussex Shotokan Karate-Do. Location/s: Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, UK. Broad Oak Village Hall, Heathfield, Kent, UK. Sensei's: Ian Hollidge, 3rd Dan, Adrian Pryor, 2nd Dan.
  11. Yay, one up for the good guys for a change!!
  12. I go on youtube quite a lot but i save videos from Masters like Kanazawa Sensei, Nakayama Sensei and other such knowlegable people etcetc, for reference in helping me with movements in certain Katas. I look and browse, i save and cross reference, but i dont join in. I just use it as an extra resource to help me in my studies of Shotokan Karate really. But big up to you guys that have your own videos going on, and all the very best of luck to you all!
  13. Its K K K all the way for me! Traditional Karate has Kata at its very core.
  14. You are right MP-those ARE cool exercises! I shall be speaking to my Sensei in the very near future, to see if we can incorporate them into our warm up, and if not then i will try them at home--thank you for that!
  15. Could it be used as a block and an attack, but using the ball of the foot only? I dont suppose its something you would want to do all the time though, with all that pressure on that turning knee. Must get 'Nakayama' out, he will know!
  16. LoL, i am 54 and have just started training! I feel alive, invigorated, happy and very much contented when i come home after my two sessions a week, its absolutely amazing because i have never felt this way before about ANY form of excercise, indeed before i took up Karate, i looked for excuses to get OUT OF hard work, but now i relish digging the garden and moving stone/blocks/bags of cement and slabs as an aide to my Karate training, so BRING IT ON I SAY!! Todome sums it up perfectly in my opinion, and what a laugh it was too!!
  17. I use just yer basic one a day vitamin tablet, and a one a day high strength cod liver oil tablet, for supple joints. Some of the supplements/vitamins/powders/teas mentioned above require further investigation by myself because i need to find that 'balance' of what works and what doesn't, so i'm off shopping soon! With regards to the Arnica Zaine, it comes in tablet and a cream form, (for bringing out bruising--distilled witchehazel does the same job.), as i am sure you are aware of!
  18. Does your glucosamine work well for you rd2022? I use high strength cod liver oil tablets, and a basic one a day vitamin supplement. I was wondering if there is anything else on the market that i could use, especially with regards keeping the joints supple and 'oiled up'!
  19. ''Liam o'grady'' , the double european champion. A 4th degree BB. The story is in The York Press about HIS rape and defilement of a 13 year old girl. Thankfully the majority of trainers in the Martial Arts are above board.
  20. @JusticeZero: People who hear this a lot usually hear it because it is said a lot, by many other people who hear it a lot also! Truth be known sir, you probably have more Martial Arts experience than me, i only started Shotokan Karate late last year, the same with Tai Chi. So i bow to your experience in such things BUT.....i stand by what i said. Tai Chi IS one of thee most deadliest of all the Martial Arts and whether it is called 'grand ultimate fist' or 'ultimate fist' or whatever it is called, a dictionary does not do it the justice that is required for this most noble of Martial Arts. Have a nice day sir.
  21. Also may i say, because i forgot in my last post, (!), that Tai Chi can be a really good ''crosstrainer'' for other Martial Arts styles such as Karate.
  22. I would respectfully suggest to the many people that think that Tai Chi is for the elderly, (as a form of excersise promoting good health and vitality in the later years of their lives), and has no combative use to it, that it is in fact one of THEE most deadly of the Martial Arts. Not for nothing is it called the 'Grand Ultimate Fist'!
  23. My two cents only: Can a motor car run without the internal combustion engine? No, it cannot. Kata IS Karate from time immemorial. If nothing else, it keeps the brain active. Think of all the blocking/attacking movements in all the Kata ever devised, there must be enough there to fill the brain's data base. I may have said before, but i much prefer Kata than Kumite, and there again, Karate would not be Karate without Kumite. Kata and Kumite run in conjunction together, without the two there is no Karate.
  24. Hmmm, a very thought provoking and interesting post--thank you for sharing that!
  25. Never EVER will i change from my style of Shotokan! Kyokushinkai is said to be the 'Strongest' Karate, (Kyokushinkai 'till i die!), but no one can argue with guy's like 'Bassaiguy' either with what he says about Shotokan! (It's SHOTOKAN not SHOTOCANT is our saying!). Besides, i have an afinity with the Great Master Funakoshi-he died the year of my birth.
