Can you elaborate on your style's name and or teacher's name? And if you want I can look at the pdf files for you, if you think about email them over to tdraym@gmail.com I can get that one through my phone, other wise I won't get a chance to look at it until i get back from vacation. In our style we do 42 different forms by the time we reach yondan, so even if it's a variant I think I would be able to notice something similar with it, but maybe not. but feel free to shoot it my way.

Getting off the Line.
Fudoshin_Ryu replied to Fudoshin_Ryu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
For some people, not necessarily pertaining to me or you, 'line' is simply where a person projects an attack from, or where he is 'squared off to face'. So I think considering, if you make someone get off his or her own line, your making your line change pertaining to where you attack would have to end up, especially if you have to then alter your body to 'face off' again if need me. Maybe not though, I just like to hear other people's thoughts on this. I myself have been in a few fights, mostly in highschool...small minor fights, it was only in college that I had a small knife pulled on me. Nothing really serious then, because I got off the line..and it seems everyone with a knife seems to lunge forward (and not just in movies as it seems, unless this person seen one to many Chuck Norris or Steven Seagal films). I guess there really isn't any right or wrong to this whole thing, simply it stands with the standards of the 'confrontation' dealing with the aggressor, and 'us'. But I do agree with you on the body movement (you mentioned foot play) In my school we refer to any movement of the body as tai sabaki, and that can also be similarly thought as moving 'off the line' or onto a new 'line' -
So it's sufficient instead of doing a so called 'jump back' to modify it to a 'slide back'?

I notice a lot of Kobudo kata have unique 'jump backs'. Such as Sakugawa no Sho ("no kun" if you like it that way as well). And even in a variation of Annanko no Sai, some kata even have NUMEROUS drops to one knee such as Kanegawa no Tinbei. In Rochin no Tinbei you see a roll (I don't dare say Ukemi for this waza, more like tai sabaki I think). Numerous Kama kata has the practitioners dropping to one knee, and taking jump backs landing in tsuru ashi dachi, as well as in neko ashi dachi. Okutagawa No Kama has numerous shiko dachi (although it's not as bad as kiba dachi in terms of strain on the knees it can be difficult for older and heavier martial artists). What is your take on this? Is it ok to edit these movements OUT of the form? Or does that take away from the whole form in General? How do you go about these changes as age?

I think it's funny how many people get into a martial art expecting it to be something soft and cuddly, and then they automatically expect it to make them into leaders or something of the sort. Pain is something that's natural in life, your gonna experience it with or without sparring, so why do people get so caught up in being afraid of the little 'love tap' from your peer or senior? I can understand when your young...thirteen and under and being afraid, but it's a responsible step in martial arts, sparring that is. Or at least I think so.

Getting off the Line.
Fudoshin_Ryu replied to Fudoshin_Ryu's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was once at a Ninpo Seminar (aka ninjutsu aka taijutsu aka nintaijutsu by Greg Park). And don't get me wrong, I believe it could be a very very very destructive art, once they lose some of the mysticism. But...the first thing I 'learned' within this seminar was the 'deadly' art of Kiai Jutsu against a knife wielding opponent, whilst they are charging at you, at full speed. This I had to laugh at, sure Kiai could take someone off guard, but I don't think it would kill or render someone defenseless for a significant amount of time. Then, this is the part that made me laugh the most, and after this I left, quite dissapointed, I didn't even stay the duration of the seminar, maybe that was rude of me, but I was dissapointed that I paid 150 bucks to go to a "Knife Self Defense" titled seminar...and I was learning junk. Telling me they would next learn to disarm a knife by Atemi waza from the "koga" (they pronounced it Koga...and not koka) Ryu sector of the bujinkan...well when the 'agressor' came barreling at them in the WORST way ever, and they throw up a block and a leg sweep...all the while, getting 'slashed' open by the wooden knife...I don't see how that was a right seminar of knife defense...or atemi waza for that matter...but...I think if they would have 'gotten off the line' they wouldn't have been 'slashed' open by a wooden knife, and a few more people might have respected them a bit more. -
The sun and moon thing, sounds like something due to localization. I never seen any Shotokan practitioners do it, perhaps they do though. I don't recall seeing Kanazawa Sensei doing it in his videos, I know I have seen Kajukenbo and Kajukenpo teachers do that as well as Hawaiian Kenpo practitioners. I will use Suparunpei kata as an example. I witnessed a Shotokan man doing suparunpei, same embusen and everything. But they refer to it as Hyaku Hachi Ho going off the Kanji for Suparunpei, and it's meaning of 108 hands. They refer to their form of suparunpei as 108 steps. So even if a Shotokan man is doing a kata from a different style perhaps they would change the name, is their any way you can contact your Sensei about this? It might even be a personal or a creative form he did for himself. I have an uechi ryu teacher who made a uechi inspired form, giving it a Japanese name.

Shinobi no Mono is a magazine dedicated to Ninjutsu and Bujutsu, has anyone ever heard of it before? You have the option top buy an E-copy where they send you a download link or you could purchase a 'hard' copy which is actually soft as it's paper back LOL. The e-copy is like five bucks while the paper copy is $14.99 I believe. But I was wondering just how well known the magazine is by people! http://www.shinobimagazine.com That's the url, lemme know if you've heard of it before.

Belts what to where at a different school?
Fudoshin_Ryu replied to Dobbersky's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Wherever I go I wear my white belt when I visit or even start a new style. It's respectful to everyone, and my white belt is quite dirty so everyone knows I am not really a whitebelt any how. -
Sort of sounds like Chatan Yara...I believe some styles say "Chatan Yara Kusanku"....look that up maybe?

What's everyone's opinion on "getting off the line" of an attack. I for one don't think people think about it, enough. You see all these people teaching self defense orientated martial arts seminars, against all sorts of offensive weapons, (I.E. Knife, Gun, Machete, hachet...etc), but they always face the opposition, head on. What do you as a person, and as a martial artist think about this? If you need more information on people I am referring to, youtube is filled with "expert village" personnel who demonstrate this type of 'budo'. I do not wish to talk bad about these people, and I don't necessarily think I am talking bad about them, but I simply don't understand how someone can teach self defense without getting off the line, especially when facing a projectile or bladed weapon (well any weapon for that matter!) Perhaps it is simply my own ignorance, where I feel that I MUST get off the line in the occurrence of an attack, but this is what I know, if I am wrong, please tell me so, and I will reconsider the whole concept of 'getting off the line'.

I use "Drop and Give me Twenty". It's a pushup app that you utilize your nose, to count the push up, and I have a very very thin phone...so...it puts a whole new 'mind set' to "how low can you go!". I don't like the cardio apps, no matter where I place my phone (bicep, ankle, waist, even the nike shoe piece) they never record proper distance >< Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, I will check them out also. Anybody else? ^_^

Hey guys, I am new here, and I am planning on opening a school soon. I have noticed a few wholesale sites around like Zengu, etc etc. But I was wondering on a personal preference. I am not looking for the best quality in a uniform as these will be for the most basic of techniques and students. I was wondering if you knew of a good wholesale company or program through a supplier that supplies cheap wholesale uniforms. I am willing to buy in mass as well. Thanks in advance. ~
