How is judging expected to change next year? I haven't followed wkf to closely but will be taking a few students to some of the Midwest competitions. Are the changes on usankf yet? Thank you. 7 judges. Separate scores for technical and athletic performance (the flag system will be gone). It will be in effect from Jan 1 2019 and introduced at the Paris Open in Jan. . The Chairs of the five continental referees commissions will attend a briefing at that event. What will be interesting is how regional events implement it. Hmm, so back to something similar to the old scoring system. Head to head scoring or total scoring in a group? I haven't check the wkf or usankf sites yet but are the rules now published there? Thank you. It’s not on the WKF site yet. I had this appear on my newsfeed less than an hour ago so I’ve just taken my first look at it. https://karateyalgomas.com/2018/11/16/kata-and-kumite-competition-rules-for-2019/ In a lot of ways in operation it’s going to be similar to the old system.

There were still plenty of Unsu and Superimpi. Just not in the finals. Shimizu from Japan did Shitoryu throughout the rounds and in the final. However she also did Team kata and they did Shotokan kata throughout. Some Shotokan stylists seems to have picked up the kata Seisan from GenseiRyu. Things may change again when the judging system for kata changes next year.

I just returned home from the WKF World Championships. I would estimate that Shito Ryu kata comprised 70 to 80 % of the Kata performed in the individual divisions. All four finalists (Male and Female) performed Shito Ryu. In the women’s final both did Chatanyara Kushanku. The Men’s were one Annan Dai and i think the other was also Chatanyara. There was far more Shotokan in the team events.

I think it’s likely to hold its place for Paris 2024. WKF Karate is massive in France. They have a strong team that is fully funded and events get wide TV covered. However LA2028 and it is almost certainly gone.

The Olympic program includes kata. A more relevant question would be whether the Incluson of karate in the Olympics will lead to some WKF based schools to become more sport focused. I have no doubt the answer is Yes.

I have all of the Arawza gis you mentioned. The Onyx Evloution is 7oz which the Air is 6 and the Zero Gravity is 5. It depends on what you want them for. I probably wear the Evolution the most. The Air and the Zero Gravity are paper thin compared to the Evolution. I wasn't a huge fan of the Air but the Zero Gravity is great. It has that similar smooth fabric feel on the surface that the Evolution has. My son who competes has worn the Zero Gravity almost exclusively in competition since he got it this time last year.

Existing in a karate club when I'm opposed to sports karate.

Its not a demonstration sport. The medals will be bona fide Olympic medals. Changes to the selection process for Olympic sports werre made a year or two ago. There are now 25 Core Sports. Other sports such as Golf, Rugby and Karate are subject to approval for each subsequent games. -
Yeah - looked a tough division. Looks like your club did pretty well.

How did you go. Saw your face across the other side of the competition area but was so busy I didn't get the chance to say Hi.

I've never seen the white ones apart from those photos. They certainly look the same and the current model. The Red and Blue ones are WKF approved and they would not make specific WKF approved white ones. WKF changed there style about two years ago and all WKF gloves became more curved to offer more protection. Compare the Red and blue ones on that site to the white ones.

Kata will be included in Tokyo along with Kumite. The divisons will be Male kata Female kata Male kumite - 3 weight categories. Female kumite - 3 weight categories. 10 competitors per division. No team kata? That's my favorite division to watch! Mine also - esp at World level - but no Team kata. The reason Karate and the other new sports got the opportunity to be included was they changed the Rules for inclusion from Maximum number of sports to maximum number of athletes allowed at the games. All of the new sports except baseball/softball have been accepted based on submissions that included 80 athletes. I guess Team kata would have meant another 30 competitors and jeapordised our inclusion.
