Thanks! Update: I did some light leg workouts with weights this week and one just before class yesterday. With the help of an ace bandage during class. I made it through fine, no pain at all. I avoided butterfly stretches too, I think they were not doing mich good right now. I will wait a while longer before starting those back up.

Thanks guys. I will give the extensions and curls a try. I went thru three weeks of physical therapy in June but they were mostly interested in helping regain flexability and making sure the surgery went well enough to not cause pain with each step. So far I'm doing pretty good, I tested up a belt last week!

I looked all the way back to June and didn't see one so here we go. I had knee surgery for torn cartilage at the end of May and have recovered fairly well. My problem is now that I have started training again, I am experiencing pain when I pivot on my leg during kicks. I don't want to reinjure my knee. Are there any special exercises to strengthen the muscles of the knee?

I'm in the same boat. Torn medial meniscus, I'm told, most probably. The soonest I can get into a specialist is May 6. I told my regular doc that I didn't want anything for pain. I may just go back on that in the next week if I see no improvement. Good luck,

Any of you injured because of practising martial arts?

Dude! Always wear a cup. I currently have what is believed to be a torn medial meniscus. That is the ring of cartelige in the knee that separates the two legbones. Still waiting to see a specialist to confirm it though. I have a May 6 appointment. Good thing it's not life threatening. -
Years ago I studied Kenpo, made it to brown belt. Now I am training in Okinawan Shuri Ryu.

Thanks all! I just need to remember not to drink any coffee that morning. I'll probably be nervous enough.

Alright! I received my halfway to yellow certificate this week. We get certificates not stripes. I also have my first Shuri Ryu tournament on 2/15. Actually it's a state tournament, not just Shuri Ryu. I have been to tournies before, but it's been over 10 years ago. Wish me luck.

I read that info on Master Leo. Small world. I lived in Hollywood, FL also. 91-94. Hollywood was great, I didn't really care for most of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale though. Decided Indiana wasn't so bad after all, no 30 mile wide hurricanes to deal with here.

det ri men tal \ adj (ca 1656) : 1. obviously harmful : Damaging. You wanted our opinions, so here's mine Freestyler. I am not a sensei, or a danshi but I have had some experience over the years. I fail to see how a martial art, which strenghtens the mind, body and spirit can be described as detrimental. Sure there are what you call mcdojos out there but anyone who does a little research can avoid those. Did you buy the first car you saw for sale? I didn't. Nor did I pick the first dojo in the phonebook. ( by the way A-1 Masters Martial Arts is the first here, and I am not implying they are not great instructors) Our dojo is not even in the phone book. I do not agree with your out look on what you call "the basics." I agree more with Kirves. Starting out slowly on new material gives one the opportunity to memorize the technique wether it be ippon, kata, or whatever, while focusing on form simultaniously. When you have the technique memorized, speed up. The perfect form will follow. You absolutely lost me when you began explaining your opinion of sparring and stances. The only time we have our hands on our hips is while we are streaching out at the beginning of class. I presume you were describing Kiba Dachi, aka horse stance. Often it is at the beginning and end of a kata, but so is a block. In sparring ,as soon as you hear Hajime (begin) you better be moving and fighting or you are going to get scored on. There are no "solid" stances in sparring. In closing, I guess I should say this. The best fight is the one which is won without ever throwing a punch. Martial Art is self defense training, that is true. I personnally hope to never have to use it as such in a real life situation. And just in case, I also know Glockjutsu.

Hey thanks. As I was surfing around today I found a couple pretty good term lists on some Shorin Ryu sites. They should be pretty accurate as well. So who do you train under? I train under Sensei Michael Mattingly. I met Hanshi Robert Bowles and Hanshi Herb Johnson (Shorei Goju) at a local tournament last month. I was amazed at the number of students in attendence. I only started training again in October but I think I can get my yellow belt before summer. Sensei also teaces us advanced techniques but he isn't trying to rush us through the belts. It's all coming back to me now.

I surfed around last night but couldn't find a definate answer. I'm going to go out on a limb here though and say that it's probably Okinawan.
-
You stumped me there. Good question, I will try to find out.

I used to take kenpo lessons years ago, but have not trained in nearly 10 years. I recently began taking classes in Okinawan Shuri Ryu. My sensei trains under Hanshi Robert Bowles, and used to train under the late Hanshi John Pachivas. Both are of the six chief instructors chosen by the late Grandmaster Robert Trias. I am greatly honored to be so high up in the lineage of such a wonderful martial art. Heres my problem. Shuri Ryu uses japanese terminology and I'm having a hard time retaining new terms after only hearing them in class. Can anyone lead me to a comprehensive resource where I can actually read these terms and their definitions? A Shuri Ryu dictionary would be nice. I know I can obtain a copy of a book written by Grandmaster Trias from his daughter but they are $90 + s&h. I really am only concerned with the lingo, I can remember the physical parts of training well so I don't need the entire textbook just yet.

$35 a week. One class, 1 hour long. $10 of that goes for studio rental. We are a small group and we hold class at a health club. So I guess that ten extra bucks isn't too bad since we get to use the rest of the facility on class days. Indoor pool, jacuzzis, etc.

According to the patch on my gi, the one that says "Christian Karate Association," I guess I am.
