For what reasons do people fight?
WadoGuy replied to WadoGuy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Do you feel that age is a factor in why people fight? -
Why do people fight? What reasons, right or wrong, do people fight. What scenarios? Why? What makes us fight?

If you had two people to pound on.....

TKD You -never- know who is on the other side of a computer. Please, try to be respectful to all. *rei* -
Yep, now that I've learned KuSanKu, it's like a lightbulb has been lit...i'm starting to see the big picture forms wise in Wado Ryu. pretty neat
-
Quite fun I'm fine tuning KuSanKu right now. The Pinans seem to lead up to KuSanKu. Pretty cool

My favorite kata(s) at the moment are KuSanKu (KanKu Dai) and Pinan Yondan (Heian Yondan). For whatever reason, these seem to flow naturally to me. they're fun

Martial Arts as a way of life
WadoGuy replied to moobrack's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Does drinking and smoking have a place in a martial artists life or lifestyle? Now, when i ask this, i'm not pointing a finger or condemning anyone (cause I enjoy an adult refreshing beverage every so often), but, I'm just curious as to what everyone's views are on this. -
The vid of the drunk kid getting knocked out is funny. Mixing alcohol and testosterone can have interesting outcomes.

A short term goal for me would be to get into better shape. Long term...I guess would be to give back to the school that I've been a part of. That...and...oh...find a wife.

Isn't it great when a blister decides to pop on you in class?

With the countless hours of training that Bruce did, I wonder if it was possible that his body was in such great physical condition that he made himself hyper sensitive to things...such as aspirin..etc.??

How long does it take to get a "black belt"?

BlueDragon, Excellent point. There are a lot of both. America...the land of the free...home of the brave...land of OPPORTUNITY. Many business/entrepreneur types have learned how to make a quick buck via martial arts. -
Martial Arts as a way of life
WadoGuy replied to moobrack's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
For whatever reason, the environment at the school I attend fosters a good vibe. The instructors have seen to it. It's one large family. Our school operates on a premise that after a while, one will be seek honesty of the mind and heart. Everyone helps everyone else. It's a great thing. After spending much time there, the attitudes rub off, thus one can take things to the outside world and be able to use them. I've learned a lot about myself being involved in the martial arts. It has allowed me to grow as a person...and not just physically. *end of testimony* -
Sparring is VERY important. It gives us a chance to *sort of* see what being in a confrontation is like. It also allows us to work on different techniques with a partner. Through this we can discover what works and what doesn't.

Martial Arts as a way of life

There are elements I've learned through the martial arts that I encorporate in my daily life : self control, patience, etc.. now if I could just learn to catch a fly with chopsticks!! -
How long does it take to get a "black belt"?
WadoGuy replied to Aikidoka's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It takes about 5 - 6 years to reach the black belt level at my school, provided you pass the exam...then it could take longer. Last week I sparred with a man who had just received his black belt in another style. I asked him how long he had been studying. He replied with "a year and a half". His performance proved it for sure -
I agree with Tobias_Reece. I haven't competed in a tournament yet, but I've attended several. Tournaments are a good thing as long as people realize that a tournament isn't a real life situation. Didn't Mr. Miyagi have something to say about this is one of the Karate Kid flicks??

About Sparring
WadoGuy replied to Valn's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I agree completely with Karateka. Taisabaki can be a great tool. Getting off the line of attack and working different angles adds almost another demension to sparring. -
Wado Ryu was founded by Hironori Ohtsuka. He inherited/earned the title of Grand Master of Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu at the age of 29. He met Funakoshi soon after. Ohtsuka became Funakoshi's head assistant instructor in Japan, much the dismay of Funakoshi's Okinawan students. Ohtsuka studied with Ueshiba Sensei as well. That would explain some of the spiritual elements and the sometimes "Aikido-esque" feel. Wado is prevelant in the southeastern united states. I think there is quite a bit of it in Ireland and maybe England... not positive about that though.

Wado Ryu is linear. It's very relaxed in comparison to some other styles. ANd yep, it is a synthesis of SHindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu and Okinawan Karate-Do. Interesting thing (which i think is cool) is that you're going to find rather "Aikido-esque" movements and pricinples in Wado. It's pretty neat. Iv'e enjoyed it so far

I study Wado Ryu karate. Our belt run down is : White Gold Orange Blue Purple Green Brown (3) Brown (2) Brown (1) Black Pretty straight forward curriculum for each belt level.

The "school" that I attend is great. Even though it is a large school, the staff are very personable and they know everyone by name. The instruction is excellent and the training is rough in the advanced classes. The family atmosphere is amazing!! I would do almost anything for other members or the instructors. My sensei is a great educator, martial artist, and fighter. He's also a shrewd businessman. He has a good thing going on here. I'm glad to be a part of it
