  1. Ok, lately ive been seeing posts that seem to put bjj on an untouchable plain because of takedowns and ground game that mma and bjj have to offer. Clearly, the majority of bjj focus a lot on the ground aspect of their bjj style, but to say that a traditional jjj stylist couldnt last in a fight aginst a bjj stylist fighting on the ground is simplely not correct. Because with mma, u are bound by rules plain an simple. And because of that, these matches of who will win and who will lose is a crap shoot. Merely a sport with chess like stragety(forgive my spelling). Im not a big fan of mma but i do study traditional jjj and have for over 20 years. In a ring there are factors such as age, phyiscal strengh and conditioning that make up the game. Which I give these competiors total credit for. These people are very dedicated martial artists and deserve what they work hard for. As due all martial artists. I believe that it is the person studying that defines his/her chosen martial art. But to say that I would be taken down by bjj stylist because im a jjj guy is a closed minded comment. Assuming that i let bjj stylist take me down, I have a very good ground game also. The difference is that I train just as hard as mma/bjj person accept i train for life and death situations and not for sport. For 20+yrs i have trained not to b taken down because, lets face it, if you take a street fight to the ground, u have to worrie about being stabbed, shot or being kicked in the face by another. There are plus and neg on both ends of the spectrum. Us traditionalist jjj fight for self preservation and bjj/mma fight to win a match. No matter the style, we all have one thing in common, and that is to win. This is just my opinion and do not intend to disrespect any other martial artist or the system of study.
  2. Answer to original question: move out of the way.
  3. One of my instuctors wives that i had the privlige to spar with threw me every which way. There was absolutly nothing i could do. Of course she is the highest ranking female master outside Japan:)
  4. Is there any other dojos in your area? Maybe you could find a dojo close by that could acommadate your schedule.
  5. Black belt and skilled blk belt? Im pretty sure u have to b skilled to earn a blk belt? I ve studied MA for over 20 yrs so i prettymuch know all about self control. there were three of them against me. Acorrding to this states law allows me the right to kill during the commission of a class x felony-Mob Action. I felt bad because i have a good heart. It wasnt my kids hands i had to subdue. My point is maybe i could of used less force but when i get attacked i react. Try useing self control when there is a fight envolving 20 people and three of them are running at u. At that time your conditioned responses take over.
  6. Thank you guys. I didnt want it to end like i was a criminal being a bully or something. I prob should have worded the post defferently to begin with.
  7. Are you posting that you committed a crime? You have the right to remain silent according to law. If you feel terrible, speak with someone you can confide in, remember that you may need an attorney, but don't put it into writing and post it on the Internet, Davison. With all due respect to what GeoGiant has said (such as if you lost control during sparring and feel badly about it), I wouldn't put something into writing, such as "went above and beyond the self defense aspect." Ithink i need to clarify: first, there were 20 people envolved. Three attacked me. Police were called and i did speak to the police. The first two officers were also my students. I was in the right to defend my self. What i ment by this post was that this fight gave me an opportunity to test my skill and i did. But i probably could have used less force than i did. And even though i WAS justified in my actions, I still felt bad for having to hurt these people. It was a learning experience.
  8. Im talking about something that happened yrs ago. Before i was a police officer.. And i did get the chance to say sorry to one of the guys. But in my state when three guys attack a person, thats called mob action. My bad for putting up a post such as this one..
  9. Has anybody ever lost control in a street fight and went above and beyond the self defense aspect? I ask b cuz i have done just that and i really felt terrible afterwards.
  10. American kenpo? founded by Ed Parker, a pionerr of Karate.
  11. As far as monkey style kungfu, Ihave seen a break form that uses monkey style flips and role but also drunken boxing mixed in. But i ve never seen a dojo for it.
  12. Iliked it very much. Agood family movie. Its wierd to see a remake of a fantastic movie to begin with. Jakie Chan is a great guy to have .
  13. i dont know.. the last three people i got in a fight with, i knocked all of them out by smacking them. All on diff occassions..
  14. Just think if the zombies were throwing prolectiles and weilding katana. ecspecially if you were on foot and they were quick zombies. Whole Martial Art dojos full of students turning into zombies would b running down the street or threw a forests and you and your friends were traveling by motorized scooters. LOL!
  15. A guy started crap with me while i was at a gas station getting smokes and when i left to walk to my car, the two guys came walking back up and started talking smack. I opened my car door only to have one of them shut it . I took three steps back , drew my glock(handgun) pointed it at the two of them and and said "police officer!" get on the ground now! They did so, called my partner and away they went to jail. i went home and played my xbox:)
  16. I dont think so. Once the UFC turned into the WWF, it was a goner. Which in my opinion is a good thing cuz it stays with traditional MA and keeps traditions alive and well.
  17. This movie rocks! Alittle over the edge but still is a great movie for my collection. There is another movie simply called Ninja that is awesome too. less special effects and has creditable MA in movie such as fumio Demura etc. About the last koga ninja.
  18. OK, im going to add my two cents. First, i was a police officer for almost ten yrs between three departments. I also teach police defensive tactics for the state of Illinois and had been contracted by the federal marshals office as a deputy transport agent. In all ive been through, i dont care if i go to jail for whatever as long as i live by three things= i fight for my family, my friends and my country.period. If u get into a fight and get arrested, u tell the officer that u pled the fifth, and u want your attorny present before questioning. U might get arrested or might not. What matters is u put an end to the confrontation. Now if u beat a person within a inch of his life, u got problems and all u can do is stand in front of that judge and except ur punishment. Law sucks but itwill not stop me from protecting myself or others. Thats my take on it.
  19. After i became shodan in Hako ryu, I recieved my blk obi after two 8 hr daysof testing. It had my name in katakana writing and Kanji that translated big country warrior school on the other end. I was presented with a certificate (scroll like) from nidai soke Ryuho Okuyama, The head of the system from omiya city Japan with his family stamps on it as well as writing. The writing consisted of authorization to teach the system in our traditional manor and to uphold of values. So i guess it depends on the school on wiether u can or cant.
  20. Ok, Im going to try to explain this as not to offend anyone. BJJ was taught to helio Gracie by a judoka. (cant remember name) This happened in the early 60's. The main focus of the samurai hand to hand was Daito Ryu Akijutsu which was Tekada Sokaku's system. Samurai learned these techniques they had to b able to use on the enemy and had to b affective and semi simplistic because of the armor issue. In my system, ryuho okuyama, the founder and ueashiba the founder of Aikido Studied under Tekada. At that time there was only four lisences, not belts. After training for many yrs, the two left and founded their own systems. Both r very spiritual styles. BJJ is more sporty and athletic, TJJJ is still strong in a defensive manor. Now im not saying MMA isnt, but a live fight on the street, and the fight goes to the ground, be ready to get stabbed or stomped on by the guys friends.
