Whenever i spar with a black belt at my school they always do that with me... 95% percent of the time i learn from them... but there's that 5% where they learn something new from sparring me... Those times make it all worthwhile

Right on with this post... definitely some inspiring stuff... time to get out there and train -
Man i am getting really lazy about posting in this thread... didn't make it to a whole lot of classes last week... but lets see... Trained drills a lot!!! I am at a point in the curriculum where there is just all these drills! But there a new kata for me to learn coming up very soon in the curriculum... but boy are the areas where i do most of my blocking sore!!! I gotta get a really heavy gi to wear over my arms lol...

This thread is packed solid with great advice... and i agree with ninjanurse a lot but i also see the wisdom of what DWx is saying.... And I can't see any harm in taking a free class to try the other school... Almost all dojos will give at least one free class to potental students. My school will three free lessons for people to try and decide... So maybe you can see if it all you really hope for or if it falls short of your expectations. Also a a small slightly off topic note: Under the curriculum section the left hand column is similar to the curriculum of my school... Those are some very good self defense arts to learn. I study Inayan Eskrima mostly, but all the FMAs on that list are all related somehow and I have a lot of respect for them.

Any of you guys watch boxing matches on TV? Boxers are constantly letting out sharp hisses of air when they attack.... Not so much of a yell as a , "TSSST" or something... anyone who watches boxing will know what i am talking about.... anyway i find that to be very intimidating during sparring and so i almost always do that especially with punching combos... I also find that exhaling during a block or when taking a hit really helps lesten the impact you feel from the blow (unless you happen to be taking a gut shot from a spinning back kick ) and I try to incorporate that into as much training as i can.... When doing forms i generally let out a decent HAI!!!!! at the right places... that's my little thought on kiahs.... -
Yes, I can relate to that very thing. When a student misses a block and gets tagged in the face my accident, I'll say something like...."Wait, that face-blocking is saved for the upper Dan ranks, so stop doing that until we've taught it to you properly." Students will at first just look at me kind of puzzled, and by then, I can't hold my laughter back, and then they get to enjoy the joke with the rest of us....who've done that very same face-blocking...shoot...I've done the face-blocking more times than I care to remember. along those same lines is the ancient and deadly... Crotch to knee technique! I shall hit your knee with my crotch and you will fall down from the pain and agony in your knee!!!! go ahead and try that technique next time your in class.... i dare you

Martial Arts Made Me A Better Driver

I got the most peculiar visual while reading this. That of like some random worker lurking beside the copy machine with a clever in their hands. Now thats funny! not if the clever guy is coming at you! -
Hi all, Practicing eskrima we do a lot of knife work. I always carry a pocket knife on me because they are great tools useful for all sorts of stuff. So i have decided to put two and two together. I read about the spyderco endura which is a high quality folding knife. Then I kept reading and found that they make training drones for it as well. So i ordered one knife and one trainer. http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/3846/openru.jpg http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/evanandbethany/knives/closed.jpg It is so cool doing all the knife work at my school with a knife that feels just like the one i have waiting for me when i change out of my uniform. anyone else have their own training knife? Any spyderco fans on here?

Muscle Gain or Fat Loss for a Martial Artist

you make it sound so easy -
Last night was free sparring for an hour. Got the crap kicked out of me by a black belt my left leg is so sore. I told him not to go easy on me though. I wanted to see what i could do. I ended up tapping him out once though. he tried to take me down and i got him in a guillotine choke and made him tap! He was so proud! then he tried to do it again and i tried to choke him again, but his sweaty head slipped out from my arms and i ended up getting headbutted real hard in my chin. My tongue was bleeding for a while and i didn't do any more sparring the rest of the night... So i did pad work with a lower belt for the rest of the hour. Then I learned some nifty ground fighting tips and tricks from my instructor. after free sparring it was formal class time. Helped a friend of mine who is two belts down from get ready for his belt test that is coming up in a couple weeks. Reviewed his techniques and forms with him. Helped him refine his drills a little bit. I didn't really learn too much new stuff (except for a couple ground fighting things)... but i always enjoy helping lower belts practice. and it's a great review for me. all in all a great night!!!

On hot summer days... like today... I will wear my black gi pants with a red school T-shirt tucked in. i have a black shcool shirt too... we can wear the school shirt to train in when it is hot. Otherwise a full gi is expected. (sometimes we just wear plain gray shirts too) we are not really that strict... after purple belt you can wear almost any stlye or color of gi you want. Before purple belt you are pretty much expected to be in white karate-gi or school shirt. The black belts all have red gi-tops though... no one else gets those people who are trying the class out usually just wear some athletic pants and a shirt lol....

That makes sense... If i am buddist, i don't care about what the pope says, if i am a christian i don't care about what the high priest of the hindus says... I guess i am just expanding upon your post... i don't really have much else to add

Did some heavy bag work tonight at my house... I have wavemaster set up in my basement so i try to get a good routine going... 20 of each kick (20 on each leg so technically 40 of each kick) same thing with punches (not all strikes, just jabs, crosses, and hooks) then i worked on boxing combos for about 15 minutes - 4, 3min. rounds with breaks in between. then for 10 minutes i just tried to do as many kick, punch, elbow, knee, combos as i could while dancing around the bag like i am sparring. It was only about an hour workout but boy was i sweaty!!! I tried to stretch out good afterwords to improve my flexibility. Then i just walked my dog around the blocka at a very slow pace to cool down. all in all a good night

Has anyone used two diffrent weapons at once?
Tzu-Logic replied to albeaver89's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
In eskrima there are several things that use a stick (rattan aaround 26" or so...) and a knife in the other... I don't really know them yet (too advanced for me) Also there is a whole style called espada y daga which is shield and dagger. -

Hey cool! that's a long time for a forum to be succesful this day and age! congrats! -
First off, LOL jeffrey second, kuma that is cool you thought of that. I don't have a wiifit, but i almost think you could use technology like that to train your consistency with different stances... like seeing how accurate you are with 40/60 stance etc....

i will most likely buy this... maybe not right away... but i will put it on my list.. i played all the way through the first one and beat it!

Greeting, fellow seekers of knowledge, I am not going to try and make a poll for this question but I pose to you: Who here regularly practices meditation? If you do meditate regurlarly, is it part of your ma classes? Is it something you do at home? When do you make time to meditate? Before class? At the end of your classes? When you get up in the morning? What do you meditate "on"... Martial arts? what moves you need to work on? what is happening in your personal life? Just a few questions floating around the expanse of my mind... should be interesting to see what other folks practice

At my dojo there is a class almost every weekday... i try to go to as many as i can and it usually ends up being around 2-3 times a week. plus there is an "open ground" time on thursday nights where you go in and work out with the schools equipment or learn from a blackbelt or find sparring partners or whatever you wanna do. I try to go that whenever i can too. its fun
