  1. This is wise. I'm glad he said that to you.
  2. Chuck Norris is clearly the only option! Seriously though I bet the greatest martial artist who ever lived is someone that history has forgotten. Their name is forever lost along with records of their deeds, but they were an incredible warrior unlike anything the modern world has ever seen. I like to imagine that anyway.
  3. Congratulations! Enjoy your cool rainbow belt!
  4. Excellent post! Some days my instructor will drill us and drill us and drill us. We will sometimes do the same drill for a good 30 min. He says that in the Phillippines they practice the drill for hours until you are too tired to do it wrong anymore. Or he'll have to do squat kicks and push-ups and sit-ups and and a bunch of punch combos and then have us go into forms without a break. I guess he is trying to build up our unconscious competence.
  5. Way to go! This is great community and Heidi is one of the reasons!
  6. Oh wow thank you! I don't get tot check this site too often so I didn't realize it! I'm a very honored! Thank you all for your interesting discussions. I don't always post in every thread, but I generally keep up with everything you are talking about. This is an excellent site full of respectful members. A rare thing on the internet. Again thank you
  7. Very interesting read. Posture makes a world of difference in MA and many other aspects of life. Thank you for your insight.
  8. I used to be a restaurant manager for a while, I had never had anyone physically attack me, but i did have some belligerent, angry people get in my face. I was able to stay calm cool and collected without responding in fear. Also as an I.T. guy when a there is a problem with a major system and something goes down, everyone starts panicking. I use deep breathing techniques I've picked up throughout my training to remain calm and collected.
  9. 100% this. You don't want to make a small injury worse by not telling them and then someone torquing your arm hard. That being said... Good luck!!! Let us know how it goes
  10. My only advice to OP would be to stop looking at the school itself and look inwards. What are you learning at the school? Do you feel like you are learning you art? What is your personal goal in studying the art? Can you achieve that goal at your current school? It all comes down to you as an individual.
  11. Often times death is associated with a new beginning rather than an ending. Perhaps in the same way death may be viewed as a transformational journey, so may training be viewed as a form of transformation. Even if you don't find any spirituality in your art, you can't say a physical change does not occur after much intense training. The wisdom I find in this quote is that with the death of old ideas and ways of thought, new forms of thinking and living may begin. With the death of old muscles and reflexes, new ways of movement and physical power may begin.
  12. This this and more this. My instructor is just a down to earth, normal guy. He tries to teach us to be better than he is. I feel like he is a decent human being outside of class, and that is big factor about how I feel about him inside of class.
  13. We do it all in english. All the techniques have english names. Honestly it doesn't bother me one bit. I'm ok without learning the philipino words for drills and what not.
  14. I don't think you are going to get a hold of him. He posted that last year in June.
  15. Snickers bars are very unhealthy. The "full" feeling from the snickers bar is just from too much sugar. There are many better alternatives for healthy snacking. If you do eat it, don't eat any other sweets for the rest of the day.
  16. I frame them and have them hanging up all in a line across my basement wall.
  17. Hope it heals up well and no further injuries occur!
  18. Alright! Good work! Sounds like you deserve it
  19. I don't usually have music on when i practice. If I did it would be my upbeat techno and electronica music. Maybe some power rock if I'm in that kind of mood. Sometimes I do forms really slowly and with focus. I like to put on some really mellow, ambient stuff songs by desert dwellers, buddha e. sun, or scared earth. Those also make great background tracks for meditation time if you are into that sort of thing.
  20. Good for you man! Keep practicing and who knows what you might accomplish
  21. I have been training in Inayan Eskrima for 4 or so years now. I mostly practice Kadena de Mano techniques, but I know some Dequerdas and Sinawali as well. I feel it is an excellent system!
  22. Wow that is truly special thing. Thank you.
  23. Ha ha I haven't read the manga, but I have watched the anime adaptation of Kenichi. It was a fun show. I study two martial arts currently. They are taught at the same school by the same teacher. We have Eskrima techniques, and we have Shaolin Kempo Techniques. I think they work together very well. But I will admit that out side of some tai-chi excersises I don't have any other training to compare it to. I feel as if learning the two arts together has been nothing but useful. The Shaolin for sheer striking and kicking power (plus some WICKED combos) and the Eskrima for up close, in your face, down and dirty survival fighting. It's like if someone attacks me the Eskrima techs will come out first as a survival instinct, then if the fight continues past the first flurry of blows, the Shaolin part will make itself useful for a longer fight. I hope that makes sense. Thank you.
  24. hahahaha... I always train that faced with a life threatening situation (the only time I would ever fight.) I am going to go for knee and groin kicks, strikes to the throat and eyes. And throwing as many elbows and knees as possible if they get in close. But really you can't pre-plan attacks. You must flow with your opponent. Calm your mind, breathe slowly and deeply. Consciously try to loosen your muscles. Look at your opponents neck/upper chest area and try to see all of them without focusing on a single part. It's not easy to do these things during an adrenaline dump (which you will almost certainly experience.) Perhaps the most effective technique is that of the mind?
  25. Indeed. I fully agree with this.
