If you want to be a grappler, take BJJ. If you want to work standup (throws) and grappling, do judo. JJJ is a mixed bag. Some are ultra traditional and are almost more like aikido schools as the emphasis is on small joint manipulation. However there are some JJJ schools that are phenomenal and truly bring a mixed martial arts vibe to the table. The school I go to - San Yama Bushi - is the most effective self defense system I have ever seen. They teach strikes, kicks, a ton of throws, joint locks and they interweave judo grappling in as well. Plus the school has judo classes as well so you can get your live training - randori - that most JJJ schools lack.
