  1. As a long time student of martial arts I often wish my friends and other close to me would practice any form of self defense. I worry that they might not be able to defend themselves if need be. I know you cannot force someone to start a practice but I try to encourage them to be fit and aware of their surroundings. Is it my role to try and get another person to start training? Even though they I know they must have that innate desire, or arrive on that thought to begin themselves.
  2. An open hand strike like a nukite can be much more lethal than a punch, but can only be effective if your hand and fingers have been strengthened for it.
  3. Style: Isshinryu Rank: Ni Kyu Days: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays I train under one of the students of Grandmaster Willie Adams, and have been doing so for the last 8 years.
  4. I study under Master Michael Shaefer, who studied from Grandmaster Willie Adams who was tough from Don Nagle
  5. Well right now im in Adelaide, Australia. And I was just wondering because there are loads of street preformers here, and Im pretty strapped for cash. I think im gonna give it a go tomorrow morning.
  6. Just a question. You know how in some places you see street musicians and magaicians, people juggling and stuff. What does everything think about maybe doing katas, or something like that as a way to earn some chump change?
  7. To me, karate is self defense and not sport. It would feel wrong to see it in the olympics. Just my opinion.
  8. I think Japan is one of those places where the elders are held in high regard to the community. I think this idea brushed off on karate.
  9. Not sure how he would like to travel up to Michigan, but this is the only tournament I know of. http://www.naikc.org/ You can find the list of rules and stuff on the site.
  10. In alot of sports, we can practice with the team but when it comes to game time, we are left out because were not the best. But karate is diffrent first of all becasue its an individual sport and an art. You learn at your own pace, and I love it
  11. Haha, everyone seems to know so many more katas than me. Ive been practicing Isshinryu for about 5 years and all I know is, Seisan Seiuchin Naihanchi Wansu Chinto
  12. I would go shuriedo all the way, but thats just me
  13. If you get a Shureido gi, its gonna shrink a tiny bit if you put in the dryer, but just air dry it and itll be fine

    NAIKC

http://www.naikc.org/ Just wondering if anyone else has looked into going to this tournament. I dont live to far from where its being held, so I may attend.
  15. My gi has the round school patch on the right sleeve, and the isshinryu mizugami on the left front part of it. Everyone in the dojo im at has these.
  16. If I were you, I would start with one leg off the ground, preform the kick nice and slow at least ten times before placing the foot back down. This will help build balance, and your ability to do the kick correctly, as well as build muscle in your legs.
  17. I love everything you just said. Technique as well as understanding, is probably the most important thing. Karate is a personal journey each karateka embarks on by themselves.
  18. it looks so easy to break in half
  19. there is definitly a similarity, without any doubt
  20. Thanks for the advice. Im going to purchase these on amazon sometime in the next week, work on technique, nice and slow, and see how things go.
  21. Would anyone recommend training with a weight vest, or ankle and wrist weights on. Ive been interested in buy some lately, and frankly Im not sure how much it will help. Would it make my punches more powerful, quicker, or anything, or would it just build muscle mass and slow me down. Any advice?
