intercept the enemy with some kind of strike that goes in a straight line. never block then counter unless you have to, beat them to it instead or block as you strike. if it comes down to someone attacking you, just face facts that you may get clipped by something. use the samuri approach. strike first, or take them out as you are getting struck.
There should be no rigid stance. you fight from wherever you are at the time deep stances are to strengthen the legs and instill disapline, during training, and if needed can be called upon to be used without fail. facing off with the enemy with a low stance is unwise. starting with an upright mobile stance is the best, it doesnt give away what you know.
