Ugh, absolutely disgusting in so many ways... I'm just at a complete loss for words.

I honestly do like the bit of fray on my black belt, but I also like when the cuffs on my favorite pairs of beat up jeans start to fray as well... Just my personal general preference really but I just usually like the more worn beat up look.

I was VERY pleased with their service. I placed my order and it was processed the very same day, I received my belt very quickly. I believe the owner's name is Hamid if I remember correctly, he personally responds to all queries you place on the site and answered all my ridiculous questions I had at the time, so if you have any questions for them you can expect a speedy response. I'll definitely use them again in the future.

I bought a tokaido extra wide, extra thick satin (http://kuroobiya.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5_9&products_id=63) when I reached shodan. Very nice belt with a great shine to it which I wanted, belt was really stiff at first but after a year of training it has broken in very nicely. Not sure about hirota though I hear they're nice as well. A tokaido satin or silk will fray very easily as it breaks in so keep that in mind if that's something you want/don't want. Hope that helps.

The US Open in Orlando is one of the biggest martial arts expos in the US. Has continuous sparring as well as many other divisions. A few students from our school are getting ready to compete this year, I really want to go to compete as well but the fact that it falls on the weekend of July 4th makes that a bit of a bear... Website is: http://www.usopen-karate.com/ Hope that helps!

Whats open Style Karate?, just curious I never heard of it before. Just means that we're not a traditional style. My master has a background in Goju-Ryu, TKD, Hapkido primarily and to a lesser extent Kali and Kung-fu. Our style is primarily a blend of the first three.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me and provide some insight. I currently have a century lightweight gi (size 6) and a middle weight gi (size 7) and it seems like every time I want to go up in material quality with century I need to go up a gi size because other wise the legs are too narrow. Anyway I was looking at ordering a heavyweight gi from them (possibly iron man) and was wondering if anyone knew how much smaller their heavy weight uniforms run compared to their middle and/or light weight? Thanks.

To be honest I'd never heard of them before you mentioned them on here... where did you first hear about them?
-
Very cool, I was a bit skeptical when I first looked at the picture but upon closer inspection it does look like there is a lot of padding on there... For $30 it definitely can't hurt to give them a try. I noticed that there are only two sizes "regular" and "large" and no other descriptors for the sizes... what sizes did you and your buddies get and can you give me an estimation on how big they are?

I'm a first degree black belt in our system and loving every minute of it!

I've also heard that if tapped, a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick could power the country of Australia for 44 minutes... That'll be the only one I do, I swear. I just couldn't resist.

Oh and I checked and you are correct as far as I can tell, I was mistaken about Chuck Norris he was a non-contact competitor. I shall hang my head in shame for my error

I think you hit the nail on the head with why people don't like MMA. It's not traditional, its not that graceful, its a bit coarse and fairly gritty at times. I know there's also a huge rift between the worlds of Boxing and MMA... Boxing officials are not fans of the UFC... You just have to kind of appreciate MMA for what it is, its pretty much the pinnacle of martial arts competition today but it shouldn't be the poster child for discipline or respect.

Well I added something to a cart and after you do that there's a link that says "proceed to secure checkout" and after clicking that it does lead you to a secure site... Still if you feel uncomfortable you're probably just better going with a bigger retailer and getting the security that comes with that.

I find that kind of funny that you say that because when kickboxing became big in the 70's many traditional martial artists didn't like it and felt it was a fad as well. (Of course I also assume when you say traditional kickboxing you are referring to full contact kickboxing that was made big by guys like Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris and Bill Wallace, so if I'm making the wrong assumption please by all means let me know) Assuming that, I'm not saying I agree or disagree with you on the point I just think its funny. I've spent a good deal of time thinking on the subject actually, because the grandmaster of our system is Bill Wallace who blasted MMA last year in some of his columns in Black Belt magazine and caught a lot of flak for it. So I always find it a little amusing...

I personally think its kind of silly for people to create their own style... unless perhaps they have something really new or really interesting to bring to the world of martial arts. Also in some cases it just seems like arrogance on part of the system's "creator". I suppose I think its kind of silly because if your background is in say... TKD, BJJ, Judo, and Kali. And you take bits and pieces of each and put them together in a new package... you're really not CREATING anything new... On the flip side if you have a school or run a program and say up front that you simply teach "Martial Arts" because of your diverse background, that doesn't bother me nearly as much, no traditional system is complete so teaching/learning complimentary styles is a great thing... but doing so and putting your name on it just seems silly/arrogant.

just wear it when you train and don't worry about it, the belt will be broken in before you know it.

Practice makes perfect ya know? I know september probably seems like a long while back but remember you're still fairly new to this, just keep practicing the movements whenever you have time... eventually they'll become so ingrained in your muscle memory that they'll be like second nature. I'd just say to relax, keep up the practice and let it come with time.

Not sure what a TKD Wavemaster is, after a quick google search I assume you mean this(?): http://www.mykaratestore.com/store/pages-productinfo/product-141/century-tkd-wavemaster.html Anyway, century is pretty good with their variety in products, the main wavemaster is their XXL wavemaster: http://www.centurymartialarts.com/Training_Bags/Wavemaster/Wavemaster_XXL_Bundle.aspx As great a bag as that is nothing beats a hanging bag imo, what they lack in mobility and size convenience they make up for in a superior ability to take a beating (in my experience anyway)

What is THE WORST Martial Arts Related Injury You Ever Had?
jaddensinn replied to Tiger1962's topic in Health and Fitness
I've been pretty lucky as I haven't been seriously injured in my time doing martial arts. I have gone through the basic minor injuries though, pulled hamstrings, twisted ankles, hyper extended joints. The worst injury I've probably sustained is the damage I've done the the knuckles on my right hand from some board breaks, thankfully that's still not as bad as I've seen on others. -
We throw the knife hand block with the fingers tight together and the thumbs tucked in tight.

In my experience the younger the children are the more "high speed" the class needs to be. In other words you kinda need to switch gears ofter to maintain the kiddies' interest. Other than that, you just have to really tailor the activities to things that will still teach the kids but not bore them, karate obstacle courses always seem to be a hit with the little ones at our school. But the thing you always have to keep in mind, and its already been said a few times, the younger the child is the more fickle then tend to be, and really each child will be 100% different in terms of whether or not their attention is going to hold.

Very interesting... my pushups always seem to cap out between 25-30, after that I can go a little longer but form goes out the window So I'm definitely gonna give this program a try and see if I can bust through my plateaus.

I think that hits the nail on the head in many ways. After reading the first post of this thread, Bill "Superfoot" Wallace came to mind for me. He created what is known as the "Superfoot System" and while it isn't anything "new" in terms of martial arts the system is based around fighting in a certain way and using certain techniques to their highest advantage.
