BlackTiger replied to ryukasagi's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
The fear of being hit ? If your afraid of being hit you don't have any business training in any Martail Art or even boxing. Proper training in Kung Fu hurts. Until your hands, arms, legs, etc are properly trained, it is gonna hurt and still might. Wing Chun , all Kung Fu styles, Karate, Jui Jitsu etc. teach fighting drills and power development, As a kid growing up we use to " slap fight" all the time this wasn't M/A it's - old american tradition. Street fighting and bare knuckle fist fighting has been arond the USA forever. My dad used to bare Knuckle Fist fight on the street in Los Angeles for $ during the Great Depression. I knew Bruce Lee and some of his students, they were not afraid , they will stand and deliver. BTW we don't cover up with protective gear , we do it in the raw, and rarely have had any injuries, and only a few minors one in the last 50+ years, this is where a well experienced Sifu comes into play. Yes we are aware of liabiltiy and have insurance. -
LOCATE A SIFU THAT TEACHES TRADIONAL KUNG FU - A SIFU THAT TEACHES KUNG FU ONLY. IT TAKES A FEW YEARS TO LEARN THE TIGER PROPERLY. IT TAKES A FEW YEARS TO DEVELOP THE HORSE, AND CAT STANCES, AND THE FINGERS, PALM, HANDS, ETC TO BE POWERFUL ENOUGH TO USE. VIDEOS WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO " DANCE". IF YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL SOME DISTANCE, DO IT, GO ONCE OR TWICE A MONTH, TRAIN DAILY, GET A FRIEND TO TRAIN WITH. MAKE A PUNCHING BAG OF YOUR OWN, THEIR CHEAP AND BETTER THAN THESE EXPENSIVE MODERN DAY CUSTOM LEATHER BAGS. HOW DO YOU MAKE A BAG ? GO TO AN ARMY SURPLUS STORE, BUY SOME OLD CANVAS, TAKE IT TO A SHOE STORE, OR UPHOLSTERY SHOP, HAVE IT CUT 10 INCHES ROUND AND 4 FEET LONG AND LEAVE ONE END OPEN. FILL IT WITH RIVER SAND 80 LBS. AND HANG IT. IF NO ONE AROUND YOUR NEAR VICINITY TEACHES THIS WAY OR QUALIFIES, IN TIME YOU CAN.

Kiah Shouts
BlackTiger replied to Johnlogic121's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
the reason people shout is to " let the air out" of their body - holding your breathe is dangerous. The Sensei or Sifu knows your letting it out if you shout. In Kung Fu we don't shout, we exhale loudly enough so our Sifu can head it, breathing exercises are one of the top piorities in Kung Fu. Executing a srike while exhaling in very powerful, this developes and understand inner strength, -
"One Punch One Kill" Concept
BlackTiger replied to marksmarkou's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It only takes one, if your properly trained for it. Conditioning the fist , palms, etc, knowing where to hit the target, along with a strong stance will do it. This takes years. I don't feel as though people train this way anymore. A well placed kick will also do it. If the fist are strong enough they can easily break bones, palms slaps can rupture ear drums, and groin kicks send the receiver into lala land. This type of conditioning and training takes more hard work than one realizes. It it isn't wise to teach it. It's too dangerous. This falls into Dim Mak styles which were closely guarded and taught to few students. -

What is "Traditional?"

Shotokan is tradional. Perhaps you have misunderstood my words. No harm meant. -
What is "Traditional?"
BlackTiger replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It is impossible to guarantee anyone can keep any Style 100% unchanged. However if one has been fortunate to have learned from an authentic ancient teacher to keep this traditional is an honor. If this case one should do their best to do so. -
What is "Traditional?"
BlackTiger replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Traditional M/A is one in which the art has been passed down unchanged from generation to generation. -
learning from video's is not a good way to learn any M/A. However I have seen some Kempo teachers that offered a video couse in which you would learn a form then send a video of yourself back perofrming it in order to verify your progress. " hands on " teaching is the correct method. Attend work shops or seminars if possible.

Shaolin Gongfu Forms
BlackTiger replied to tsdprime93's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
if your loooking for a video of each movement of a specific Weapon or style ( form) your best bet is to find a credible Sifu and pay to have it made. -
Keep training with what you already know. Perfect it. Look for a qualified teacher that will come to you, set up a work shop for all of you together and have these on a regular basis. Or travel to a qualified teacher on a regular basis and continue to learn. My best to you.
-
In order to be qualified to teach one must have the knowledge to teach.Example: Is a 5th grade teacher qualified to teach the first year in colledge ? Credible teaching is seen in the performance of the teachers students. Some people are born with a natural abiltiy to teach, They are " people persons", give them knowledge and they pass it on with ease and no ego. A " people person" is liked by most everyone. The longer we train in M/A the better we become at teaching all ages. Children, adults, and old people are still people and should be treated as such. If we love people and teaching we belong in it. M/A teachers are faced with a task quite different then most, we teach all ages, we have to deal with all ages and my hat is off to those of us that succeed.

which style?
BlackTiger replied to Roys15's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Hung Gar closed fist resembles Shotokan. All the closed fist styles of Kung Fu resemble Karate, they are very similar. The confusion I feel is too many people see KF as animal styles only, which is incorrect -

Jimmy Woo's San Soo Kung Fu is a mixture of several Kung Fu styles. I like the fact they put their emphasis on self-defense . -

hung ga
BlackTiger replied to jctkd's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I am new to this froum but old in Kung Fu. As I read through this I found it to very interresting. I don't want to rehash an old subject - I would just like to add some information. Hung Ga is an extrenely strong fighting style. Some ancient Masters claimed it originated on the Chinese Boats. It was named Hung Ga and refererred to as the Hung Ga Boat Style in the old, old days. Boats are unstable, they move up down, back and forth etc. Because of this participants were taught a low stable , solid. strong stance. Jumping and kicking was limited because of the lack of space. If one encounters a Hung Ga Boat stylist on land, they will be surprised by their method of fighting, and will be in for the fight of perhaps their life. They slug it out on the spot and move right through the opponent. Hung Ga Boat fighters prefer Closed fists styles . Vertical Fists, elbows, palms, uppercuts , backfists, leg stomps, leg sweeps, and a few kicks. This is only one method of Hung Ga training there are certainly more. The favored Animals are the Dragon and the Tiger/Crane. -
Hung Kuen
BlackTiger replied to Jay's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
My post didn't get in - my fault as I am new to this forum- My question was has anyone heard of the Hung Ga Boat Style ? A few of the Old Kung Fu Masters knew it from years ago and taught it. They claim Hung Ga originated from the boat people of China. A boat isn't stable and always rocks back and forth.Students were taught to stand in a very low , very solid horse stance. There isn't much room on a boat so jumping and kicking are limited, as is moving around, it is a stand and deliver fighting method one might say a "slug it out " method. -
Hung Kuen
BlackTiger replied to Jay's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
That's great you've decided to try Hung-Ga. There's a steep learning curve in the begining stages. Remember there's a method to the madness. Stances, bridge conditioning, basic drills & Gung Ji form will make up most of your initial training. In our lineage there are four hand & seven weapon forms: -Gung Ji Fook Fu/Subduing the tiger in an "I" pattern -Fu Hok Seung Ying/Tiger & Crane double form -Ng Ying Kuen/Five animals fist -Tiet Sing Kuen/Iron wire fist -Broadsword, Pole, Butterfly Swords, Spear, Tiger Fork, Kwan Dao & Fan Check out http: //yeeshungga.com/tradition/ Is anyone fimilar with the Hung Ga Boats Styles ? -
STUDENTS SHOULD FEEL FREE AND AT EASE TO TALK WITH THEIR TEACHER ABOUT ANYTHING , ECPECIALLY SOMETHING LIKE THIS. STUDENTS ALSO SHOULD SHOW RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER -SO SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE. IF IT DOESN'T END AND END NOW- ONE OF YOU WILL HAVE TO GO. I HAVE BEEN TECHING FOR MANY YEARS AND I HAVE ENCOUNTERED SIMILAR SITUATIONS - IT IS THE TEACHERS RESPONSIBILTY TO RUN A " CLEAN CLUB" - HOWEVER WE DON'T HAVE EYES IN THE BACK OF OUR HEADS - SO TELL THE TEACHER. GOOD LUCK =

TRUE FUJAU VERY TRUE. IT IS WISE TO LEARN THESE THINGS ONLY WITH THE SUPERVISION OF A QUALIFIED TEACHER. I AM OVER 70 AND MY ARMS, FINGERS, KNUCKLES, ETC, ARE IN EXCELLANT CONDITION. I WAS JUST RESPONDING TO A QUESTION. I ALSO TEACH HEATH- M/A IS AN EXCELLANT METHOD OF PRESERVING HEALTH, GETTING HEALTHY AND STAYING HEALTHY. I HAVE A STUDENT THAT IS 94, SHE STARTED 2 YEARS AGO. SHE DOESN'T PUNCH THE BAG BUT SHE DOES USE HER CANE.
-
IF YOU WANT TO REDUCE THE METHOD, USE A CANVAS BAG FILLED WITH SAND- TO DEVELOPE THE POWER AND STRENGTH IN HITTING- MOST PEOPLE PREFER THE NEW LEATHER PUNCHING BAGS AND THEY HAVE THERE BENEFITS. HOWEVER IF THERE IS AN ARMY SURPLUS STORE AROUND, BUY SOMETHING OF MADE CANVAS, HEAD TO AN UPHOLSTERY SHOP HAVE IT CUT, 5-6 FEET LONG-10" IN DIAMETER. fILL IT , LEAVE ENOUGHT TO TIE THE END AND HANG IT. IN THE BEGINNING IT WILL BE SOFT BUT AFTER SOME TIME IT WILL TURN INTO " A STONE WALL". WORK IT VERY GENTLE FOR THE FIRST SEVERAL MONTHS. SKIN TEARS AND BLEEDS IF HIT TO HARD OR TOO OFTEN IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS. OTHERWISE A PIECE RUG WRAPPED AROUND A 2X4 ATTACHED TO A WALL WILL DO A GOOD JOB ALSO.

Good information. The need for this type of training is indeed fading out. Here is one old Kung Fu method. When I got into the animals that use this method we started with the 3 barrells - one sand- one uncooked beans-one small rocks- lots of Dit Da Jow is needed. Along with canvas bags filled with river sand usually 80-100 lbs. Working all of it every other day. Hit the bag with the figer tips thumb included (along with everything else). Add training grips , tennis balls, and or rubber balls. This type of training requires patience and time- over doing it = injury., Add the Animal (Tiger) Form- when ever we did any Tiger moves or Forms - we tightened our fingers as much as possible and never relaxed their strength until we finished the form. One can also increase the strength in all the Animals with these methods.
