Where Im at in southern california it will get up to 110 and stay there for like a week strait so air conditioning is important. my old school didnt have it so I guess I am kind of lucky now. --> me burning up at my old school.

what about tao of jeet kune do. Is that a good beginner book for someone just learning the martial arts? -
deff some good tips. Im not planning on going to tournies yet but hopefully soon. I have just started my new style and am really anxious to compete someday. in about a year there are states so hopefully by then with some advice Ill at least have a good start.

I was just wondering for those of you who compete in tounaments and events or have at one time, what extra preperation goes into your training? What extra do you do for sparring? or for kata? or even breaking? how much does your training time increase? thanks

Id have to go with bruce. he just trained to hard and was to talented -
no need to appologize, I didnt realize initionally the purpose of the thread. I recently have been so sucked in to brazilian jiu jitsu and karate that I most of the time have no clue what people mean and this is one where I did.

Thanks everyone for the advice it has helped me think things thru. I still have not come to a hundred percent conclusion and I have to decide by tomarrow when the classes begin. I think I am leaning towards goju because I want karate to be my base for the martial arts, it comes down to the fact that I do want both knowledge of both standing and ground but I mostly just enough knowledge to survive the ground. I think I am going to try to find a way to do bjj occasionally. The thing that is so great about the bjj is the way they spar. It is not sparing in the conventional sense they call it rolling but you have to understand that you get to go all out on your opponent because your not hitting so your MA effectiveness is tested every class. In goju the effectiveness is tested also and I am very interested to see if I will have any success in it. I think the fact that the goju class is just a few blocks away and the bjj is on the complete opposite side of town is also playing a factor. No matter what I have developed a new respect for both these arts and am eager to learn something in both of them for awhile.

Sorry PS1, I just watched how the technique was done and I was very excited to give an answer. I wouldnt consider myself a grappler and I have only recently started the martial arts. I didnt meen to ruin the post I just didnt know when someone was going to give an answer. I know this ends up in your opponents guard but I also learned a guard to full mount manuver that I would do as soon as I transitioned. even with this knowledge against a skilled bjj opponent it wont go down like that but it is just somethin nice to know.

Ive been watching videos on gracie and the answer is sweep the opponent.first you need to make sure his knees are not up to far on your body, slide out till your elbows are passed his knees on the ground you need to use both hands on the arm that is choking you. one grabs the wrist with four fingers not the thumb the next hand grabs the upper arm close to the arm pit. then you need to hook the leg on the same side that you have the arm by. you then push up your hips as hard as you can strait up rolling to the side that you have securly grabed the arm and leg. this will leave you in a mounted possition on top. I might be missing something but this is what I have recently learned from instructional videos. It is easier said than done and it is certainly diffacault against a resisting opponent thats hitting you in the face.

I am not interested in MMA its just the principles that should go into a good overall martial artist. I think what jiu jitsu has proven is that no matter how good you are on your feet a complete fighter knows at least the basics on the ground. At this moment I am leaning towards the goju ryu, I think I might try that out for a while and once I have the hang of that I want to find a way to incorperate basic ground fighting. I dont know yet I am not a hundred percent sure.

thanks for the response. Yes the cultural aspects and tradition found in MA is a factor. Yet I am heavily in it for the self defence. I know goju is solid in both of these and with practicing it 5 days for almost 2 hours a day I will be good. The jui jitsu and Muay Thai will be strictly for self defence but with Muay Thai only two days a week how good would my stand up really be? The question is do I want to be good on the ground and know a little standing up or do I want to get into goju and get into that for being on my feet and the tradition and the way it is practiced. That is a tough question for me answer.

any specific reason you prefer bjj? is it cause you practice it? I see you also have taken more traditional martial arts did you take those first then got into bjj? do you cross train with bjj to become more solid? also i see your from NE Ohio I am originally from Cleveland where about do you stay?

if I had the money. That to me would be the best of both worlds if I could do the goju and the jui jitsu then I wouldnt do the muay thai. plus the muay thai is only twice a week, and the jui jitsu is like 5 days a week. The goju ryu is 5 days a week almost 2 hours a day. I am interested in training a lot so both the jui jitsu and goju give me that.

This is my first post and Im new to karate but I would like to know some one on heres opinion. I am currently taking tae kwon do but there is mostly kids in the class and its hard to get real serious sometimes. I have been looking at other schools around my area and have been to two different classes. One class is Okinawan Goju Ryu Class. The teacher is very traditional and the work outs are very tough. I love the style and and have read quite a bit on it. The other class is Brazilian Jui Jitsu. I got to join in today and learned some techniques. The upside in this class would be compeating against people more my age and the fact that there are Muay Thai classes combined two days a week. The problem is I would much rather learn techniques standing up 5 days a week like goju but would also like to learn what to do on the ground. They are around the same price range so thats not a factor. I would just like to know peoples opinions on these Martial Arts and what to do. Thanks
