  1. For me, I have to attack the problem from the angle of the whole "tactical system". The way that presented is a bit odd. I've ran across a couple of these types over the years, most people won't go to that level if they have zero qualifications, but I've seen some. Quality "tactical" guys will usually operate out of facilities that have little in common with your standard martial arts academy. They are not, in my experience, secretive about their background or why they do what they do. All legit guys I've trained with are very cool about telling you what their qualifications are and where they learned them. Most are also pretty humble and nice guys. That wording alone, and with the lack of information, would make me wonder. If there's one question about what the school is putting out there it would make me wonder about the rest of the programs. At the very least, I'd have them dig deeper.

  3. Justice makes a really good point here. Too often the "McDojo" accusations start flying just due to cost. Even some of the more obnoxious advertising campaigns OFTEN, not always, used by McDojo's are perfectly acceptable if the product they are endorsing is quality. I don't even really have a problem with certain schools labeled "McDojo" solely because they are no-contact, sport/ exercise places with no combative output--As long as they advertise as such.
  4. 2/4 Drilled side control with knee traps on near arm. Move to arm bar, then kimura. 3 min rounds of breaking guard 20 min free roll 4, 3 min rounds of sparring. Kickboxing focus. Great, right back to injured shoulder. Trashed it when I whiffed on a cross during the last, hard round, of sparring. I know, just better then I go and mess it up again. Here comes the ice again.

  9. I go against the grain on this one, with respect to everyone who has spoken already. No way. If they choose to enrich their lives later on, a few years down the road from their infraction, maybe. But no way I would teach them any form of combat art while they were anywhere near that cycle. If a juvenile has ended up incarcerated or in any sort of controlled environment chances are high that they've been on the offender side of some sort of violent act. I won't argue that they need something, but the addition of skilled violence to their make up at this point isn't the way to go in my opinion. Teach them chess.

  11. Great call on the thread idea is right! It's really cool seeing everyone's journey summed up and their long term goals. For me, 5 years ago I was just starting BJJ. I had been doing MMA for quite some time and on the ground via that, and some shootfighting study and comps before that, but I really hadn't delved into pure, in the gi, BJJ before. I was a new white belt again. It was great. I had just given up coaching at the MMA place I was and moved on to a laid back, technique heavy, awesome jits gym which was a radical departure from a training vibe. I loved it. Still do. Now, I've been recently awarded a brown belt in BJJ and have gone on to study it almost to the exclusion of all else. I try to do just enough maintenance work in my other arts to keep a hold of that skill set, even it they might not be quite as sharp in some areas. I had to move BJJ gyms due to logistics. Luckily, the switch was very amicable and I've maintained good relations and love my new gym as well. Now, I'm focused on polishing everything. Locking down some loose ends. And getting ready for the Pans in March. In 5 years, I want to still be doing BJJ. Probably not competing anymore, but still at it (okay, competing if I'm not injured- sometimes). I'd like to have started iaido by then as well. I'd really like to study something with NO overlap into combatives and then work. I just don't have the time now with my other martial goals. I'd also, 5 years out, like to have taken the time to codify my core art as well and document the growth its gone thru in the time from when I started it to where all its practitioners have taken it now. What ever comes 5 years from now, I hope I'm still a martial artist with an ever evolving mindset.

  14. Self Defense. What everyone else has said about overlap can't be argued. No matter why you primarily study, the other reasons listed will also be developed to a greater and lesser degree. That said, sd has been and still is the primarily reason I go to classes. Now, it's not as preeminent as it used to be, but it is still at the top of the list. Given what I do, it's hard not to place that as the most important aspect of training.

  16. Pretty much what everyone said is spot on. The UK is getting it's fair share of excellent BJJ black belts as well, so if ground work appeals to you defiantly check it out. You won't spend more time on the science of the ground fight that with BJJ.
  17. The head coach is the one demonstrating technique to everyone. The person he's using to demonstrate it on is one of the senior students (usually the most senior on the mat). People that he is purposing putting others with are experienced students who can help the other (newer) people with drills. The guys moving smoother and slower than everyone else have been around a bit and the ones with wide eyes and the uncanny ability to make every movement difficult while holding their breath are the new guys.

  19. 1/26 Drilled sweeps from bottom side using the Americana configuration. 30 min free roll. The ribs continue to improve and let me roll harder with better people. Keepin' my fingers crossed.
  20. A couple of great questions. As far as work goes, I do law enforcement for a living so there is an absolute direct correlation to training and work that has been helpful. The ability to bring hand to hand training into the dynamics of situations I've been in has been a great help to going hands on with people. In return, my work has let me pressure test the principles and tactics I've been trained on. It's win, win. On a personal level, there's the confidence and self-determination that you take away from a long time associated with the arts that's helpful in seeing task thru and not being afraid to jump in the deep end of things.
