  3. Not really on the criteria as to when people can compete. People can compete when they want. Even real new white belts can, although it might be suggest to hold off a bit if you've joined last week. The important thing, at least for both places I've been, it representing well in attitude and action while representing the school. No idiocy tolerated while flying the flag at a tournament. As to criteria for competing for promotion, no. Neither gym I"ve been affiliated with has had any requirement to compete prior to, or as a condition for, promotion.
  4. The key is to understand that you're doing things for different reasons for children of this age group. It's not about teaching them your MA. It's about laying the movement foundation for them to learn later and showing them a good enough time that you make them want to learn it later. My 5 year old started jits when she was 4. Does she do jiu jitsu? Not really. But she plays some fun games that teaches her unconsciously the importance of how to make a certain positions work. She go some fun movement games that mimic transitional sequences. And she like to go. She's quietly being brainwashed into wanting to do jiu jitsu when she's old enough because she associates it with fun. So, with that in mind, I've go no problem with young kids in a program. Everyone wins, it's just a long term investment, not the immediate skill set pay off an adult would see.
  5. This. But MP and I come out of the same tradition. It's the environment I grew up in the arts in and how I've taught stand up since. Now that I'm primarily a jiu jitsu guy (there, I said it ) it's very true that the "free roll" or our version of sparring is key from almost the very start of your training and is important throughout your career.
  6. From white to blue, no previous experience, it's probably around 1.5 to 2 years. That's averaging around 2-3 classes per week with a dedicated attitude. No scheduled testing, it's when coach says you're ready. It's been that way at both BJJ places I've trained.

  8. The biggest thing, especially if it's your first time competing, is to relax and have fun. Biggest and best thing you can do for a positive experience. Don't over pressure yourself. Just go and check the box. Enjoy the train up as well. Work hard, enjoy some extra gym time (and I strongly advise you start cutting your teeth on a training camp of sorts leading up to it), again, don't over pressure yourself. There's plenty of time for that once you've got the initial butterflies out of the way and decide that competition is for you. Good luck, keep us posted.

  17. 2/13-14 CQB pistol course 2/15 Drilled counters from bottom side. Finished with triangle specifics. 30 min free roll. Focus on a north/ south gi choke from top side.
  18. 2/11 Shoulder Rehab. Drilled moving into triangle via two set ups. then hitting all the specifics of the triangle proper. 30 min free roll. Worked on north/south gi choke with coach.

  21. Both my first art and later the BJJ academies I've been at have both done the shoulder to hip roll. It minimized spinal contact with the floor and doesn't rely on any hands for support and it lends itself to breakfall training to either side and the back.
  22. Thanks, GS. Yeah, it's less than great and at a bad time. Pans in March and all. So.... 2/7 Shoulder rehab work. Hip drills to warm up. Abs Squats Overhead Press Dead lifts 1 mile on the treadmill.
  23. 2/6 Shoulder rehab. Drilled kimura from side. Reverse armbar cross body from side. Great detail work on the kimura. 10 min slow work on takedowns. 20 min light free roll.
  24. I'm going on the "no" column for a couple of the reasons answered. First up, hooks and uppercuts are not often in line with their target thru their arc of travel. Next, you might start with one strike, and transition around some form of guard during flight. I will also concur with straighblast, in that combination work is critical to success. In line means nothing if it's continually evaded.
