You know how you can build chi and store in the dan tien? Well, can you use it up? In healing and/or fighting?

You were doing really well until this part: Using your body has it's advantages. I think both ways can be useful in their own places. However it appears you think boxing punches are tense, which is wrong. A boxing teacher will tell you the exact same thing you just said: and yes, you use your whole body to throw a ball, you just don't tense it all up, like you seem to think. I'm sure it's the same in baseball and football. I am not an expert in those, but I can tell you that it is the same in soccer. When you first start out you think striking with all your power and swinging your leg as hard as you can will make it go harder and faster... that is wrong. When you learn the proper way to kick you are not tense at all and everything is fluid. Same can be said for boxing. I love wing chun, but I also love boxing. ... oh and I love soccer too

A picture of your favourite technique.

Yeah, it's like sand in the water and stuff ... Ever stand on a beach like that? The sand shifts under your feet when the water comes in.. or at least I remember it doing that... it's been a couple years since I've lived close enough to the ocean to go to the beach -
Why some MA people get beat in real fights
fungku replied to craknek's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I said I would try and diffuse it. I have failed if he turns violent. If you hit first, anyone watching could say that you are the agressor. If the person happens to be a trained fighter, then it may be a good fight. If I happen to lose: I get my ass kicked, train harder, and next time I won't lose. There is nothing wrong with having confidence in yourself. I am not 'afraid' of losing, it will only help to motivate me further, and willlearn from my mistakes to make me an even better fighter. It's a slight risk I'm willing to take in case this ends up going to court. That one moment where you let him go first may be very helpful to you. Like I said, he'll have one, so he better make it good (during my 0.5 seconds of being on the defensive). -
A whip-chain is about 3-4 feet long, I am not good about judging distances, and then there is a rope javelin which is about 16 feet long. I think that if you have extensive weapons training: staff, sticks, nunchuks, whip-chain and rope javelin (like Jackie Chan), you will be able to use anything as a weapon, like a towel , or a shirt, or even raw dough (okay, that's from a movie )

Why some MA people get beat in real fights
fungku replied to craknek's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
He won't hit me in the throat first And I won't be on the defensive. Just because he is the first to attack doesn't mean that I will be on the defensive. Maybe for his first strike, but he better make it good, because it will be his only one. -

I'll always wait for the other guy to go first, but from there on it's offensive. I'll always try to diffuse the situation first. If the other guy gets violent, I assume I've failed and react with enough violence to stop him. -
Fat Guys
fungku replied to BigGuy's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Anyone can do Kung Fu, though there will be some things you probably won't be able to do, btu you can make up for it with others you can do better. If a fat guy is in the right stance, they can be pretty damn solid. They also havea lot of weight behind punches, and throws, etc. -
I don't think they are too bad, if you train reasonably. I practice with some very hard plastic (acrylic I think) nunchuks. They could easily break a bone, or crack a skull I'm sure. I've never done anything more than hit myself in the elbow. It hurts like hell, and I can't bend my arm for a while, but I've never gotten anything worse then that. Once you learn the basics, which you can practice slowly, it would be very difficult to hit yourself anywhere other than the elbows (maybe knees). There are foam practice ones as well, but they are way too light, I don't really recommend them, a friend filled the inside of his with silicone to make them a little heavier, but they were still pretty light.. Staff is fairly good weapon to start with, and sword isn't bad either. Nunchuks are grea too. I'd really love to learn Rope-javelin and 9-section whip chain (I have one, but practice with an extension cord, because I'd be likely to kill myself otherwise).

So practicing drills with groin kicks is an acceptable replacement for sparring with groin kicks?

13yr old masters!!!!!!!!!
fungku replied to Kaju_influenced's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
At my Kung Fu school, for black sash testing you had to fight all 6 sifus (they are from different areas around the province, and all 6). They would then test your abilities. I don't think a 13 year old would be able to defend themselves against adults effectively, even if they have all the skills required. I think Junior BB is a good idea, and that when you are 16 you should be able to test for a juniour, and when you are 18 you should be able to test for an adult one. I'm not discriminating or jealous of teens, I recently just was one. -
I'm against it. And for the people who think oil isn't involved or that it's what Iraqi people want are kidding themselves.

What about the breaks, and eye-gouging?

We have a pretty low serious crime rate. I don't know of anyone, or heard of anyone killed by a gun except for a hunting accident.

heres a potential situation ,
fungku replied to jiu-jitsu fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It's probably been said, but if there is no possible way to avoid the fight, I will be going for very fast kicks to the knees and groins. And will mercilessly attack throats and eyes. It is also best to get them together. Push them together, anything, try and make them get in eachother's way. I was at a seminar where they did that once, and thought it would actually be very effective, though I probably wouldn't think about it. One thing is for sure on my side, I can instill fear in people. I don't know why, but I'm good at it in tight situations. This has come in handy a couple of times, and it was definitely an asset in High School (most of the hockey team and I were not on good terms, due to the captain of the team being an asshole, and I being someone who doesn't like seeing other people getting picked on). Weak-minded and scared individuals are usually the followers and the people who only fight in groups. It would most likely be people like this who would try and attack you in a group (I won't say always). it would be good to put this fact to good use though. Do you guys think it would be best to take out their 'leader' first? What if that just makes them all want to retaliate and raises their fighting spirit (which is a bad thing), or would it make them afraid and hesitant? OR would you take out the others first? Assuming you have the advantage of being smarter and faster of course. If the others went down from eye-gouges, groin kicks, and legs bent the wrong way, I think the leader would lose will to fight, as well as anyone else. These are all just the toughts in my head though (from just a little bit of experience). And unless you are very powerful and very fast it would be extremely difficult to pull it off. It's also hard to think clearly in a situation like that, (and all the adrenaline making your hands shake with anticipation?). BUT, If you can make these people fear you, you have a better advantage than you normally would, it makes indivuals hesitant, instead of acting as a group. The way you look helps, stay calm and commanding, or appear like a complete psycho who is not afraid and can't wait to taste their flesh. Either way though, don't act afraid, and stay calm. They want and expect you to be afraid, it would be unsettling (even if only slightly, but every little bit helps) that you are calm and are not afraid of them. It's not only physical but a mental battle. Show no pain, show no fear, show no mercy. -
To me they are similar. Eye-gouging and breaks are things that can cause permanent damage, like groin kicks. All of them are things that could happen in a fight. So saying that groin kicks are also something that could be used against you , and saying that it is necessary to spar with these to be properly prepared, it is only logical that you should want to spar with all these other possibilities as well? Right? I know that if someone goes for my groin, I'll most likely be able to defend it like any other part of my body, despite not sparring with them specifically.

That's funny We've got puck-bunnies around here. That's what we call girls who go after the guys on Hockey teams.
-
Most styles of Kung Fu that I can think of, would let you start weapons early on
-
I like JerryLove's point: If you aren't training effectively because you don't spar with groin kicks, what about eye-gouging, head-butting, biting, scratching, hair pulling, breaks, etc? Personally, I want to have children someday, and I'm confident in my ability to protect my groin.

In my kung fu school there are all kinds of neat sounds a very coarse "Waah" kind of noise (tiger). There is also some "hnnt" sort of coarse exhaling sound with some others, there is one that sounds like a laugh too I remember when I first joined and I was watching a seniour doing a form I almost laughed my ass off. It was new to me, so it was strange, though now I practice it, and it's awesome. A form where you are pushing out with 'bridge-hands' and deeply exhaling, it sounds pretty funny the first couple times you hear it.

Why must american television insist on continually making a mockery of Kung Fu?
