Different arts and styles prefer different kinds of knots. Here's one way to do it: http://www.combatteam.com/belt.html
You can easily find other instructional sites by just googleing the web for: tying karate belt. Not that hard...

There was a post on this recently in the karate forum, I think.

Don't worry about sounding stupid. I think most people will have trouble tying their belt correctly at first. I know I did.

It might be best to ask your martial arts instructor to show you how to tie it, though, just to make sure you're doing it the way he wants it done.

You should definately ask someone from your own club, particularly your instructor.

The method shown in that link is considered the 'wrong' way at my club, so it just goes to show that every club prefers a different method.

Exactly. There are ways to tye the belt that in some cultures are only used for the dead people. And in some cultures that is the normal way of tying the belt. If you use the wrong way, you may be insulting the school. Agreed, this is an extreme example, but just to show you you should really ask the people at your school instead of asking here.

The "do of belt tying" is style/school specific, some for cultural reasons others "just because". Personally as long as everyone in the same school ties their belt the same way I'm cool with it. This happpens to be one of my martial arts pet peeves!!!!! Sorry, I just can't help it !
