Subject says it all. Fall cycle dan test in Michigan Friday evening. It should be pretty fun. I'm not really nervous, but I'll of course feel better when it is all done. My only real concern is that I don't feel like I'm in as top form as I was about a month ago. As it is I've got three nagging injuries to deal with: a sprained finger, tendonitis in my left knee, and possibly a broken toe! That's what Aleve is for though. Maybe I'll take like 3 Aleve and 2 Red Bulls before the test! I'll be ready for 10 on 1 sparring then!!! :)

There is also a written section which we take beforehand. I've been spending all week catching up on my more obscure korean vocabulary and memorizing dates, number of moves in Naihanchi E Dan, etc. I think I only have to score an 80% on the test.

Luckily, I know a lot of the folks who will be testing, and it is a good solid group that should work together very well. And luckily, there are 3 people ahead of me testing for Sam Dan who will get the real misery :D

I'll be sure to let you guys know how it all when I get back! I'm sure TangSooGuy is hoping that they pull out the shinai on us!! :)

Congrats, tom! I'm sure you'll do fine...I know your instructor, and he wouldn't let you test if you weren't ready..

I didn't get whacked with the shinai until sam dan, but hey, I feel what's good for one region is good for all...I'm thinking they ought to bring that into the game for you guys, too...

didn't hafta do too much real hard stuff for my e dan test, it was just like Cho dan test Plus - more techniques, more forms, harder breaks...been awhile since I tested for E dan, though...1991-92, something like that...the hardest part was the two board ridge hand speed break, and the essay questions.

Then again, i was 17 or 18 and in prime physical condition.

I'm sure you'll do fine, though. just keep on pushing, no matter what they ask you to do.

I'll be sure to send some positive thoughts your way tomorrow...but I'll be caught up in the fact that i get promoted to Sah Dan on saturday :)

I completely forgot about the Region Eight Tournament! When I got my Cho Dan there in front of everyone that was such a rush. I can guess that you'll be more than just a little jazzed.

Congratulations on your acheivement. I have heard the occasional story about the Sah Dan test and I can only imagine how tough that testing panel is!

Tang Soo!

Tom-

I hope your test went well and you didn't have any injuries in the process.

let us know how it went for you when you get a chance.

My own promotion was pretty exciting, I'll have to say that...it's the first time I've worn a new belt in 14 years though, and that is gonna take some getting used to....even though a new belt was sorely needed.

Where is/was the testing done at, Detroit?

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.

Hey, I hope I didn't keep all of you in suspense! I wanted to make sure I got all my thoughts together before I posted. As you can see, I did live through the event.

The test was held friday night in Linden, MI in a local middle school gymnasium. There were 13 of us in all testing: 2 for Sam Dan, 4 for E Dan, and 7 for Cho Dan all from Ohio, Michigan and Illinois.

From the very beginning, the attitude of the group was very different than what I've seen at other tests. Usually when you have a number of students all testing together from different schools you see a lot of individuals standing out either in good ways or bad ways.

What was nice about this test was that everyone was extremely supportive of each other, no one came in with any chips on their shoulders politically, and no one felt that they had to "prove" anything. The attitude was serious, but not tense. The kids testing for Cho Dan obviously had a few jitters, but you could see them fade away and be replaced with confidence by the end of warmups.

I was honored to be surrounded by such a group of brilliant technicians and spirited performers.

How did I do? I guess you'd have to ask my instructor :) But I felt pretty good about test. I muffed one of the breaks, but I moved on and nailed the next one immediately afterwards. All of my injuries seemed to disappear upon bow-in. As for my sprained finger, I just sucked it up and taped it to my other finger. Luckily, no one put me in a finger lock ;)

All in all, it was a great experience and went a lot better than I'd thought. On the way up, I just wanted it to be over. By the end of the test, I was wanting to show more :)

TangSooGuy, I'm sure you'll have no problem breaking in your new belt. I'll bet your students are very jazzed for your promotion!

Hi guys as you can see this is my first post and have a few questions. I am relatively new to TKD and have never heard of an E Dan, Cho Dan and Sam Dan. Can you explain the definitions of these for me? Thanks :)
