Take their balance. I can't believe that the most obvious way of defeating someone is never discussed here. If you take their balance and know how to manipulate their structure, you got them. Moving to the right place is the key to off balancing them and being in the prime position.

Make sure the clinch causes the unbalancing and then take them down. Otherwise it's just a wrestling match.

Which may be just what you want. Either way, they cant throw flurries of punches from the clinch.

but knees and elbows might be flying about unchecked at that range.

hmmm does that mean that the most effective way of striking with fists is to throw rapid punches at the head with no control?

not good.

that feckin front kick is keeping me from getting close where i want to be...

and the old wing chun instinct to fling an elbow is getting me in trouble when i do get in range.

i 'll get used to it soon enough.

Yeah, but you can throw some mean stomp kicks to the knee if you still have your balance. Always take the path of least resistance, it's just the smart thing to do. If you have your balance you have your strength, if you are off balance you are fighting to stay up. You can't do much when you are off balance, so make sure you make the clinch mean something by taking your opponents balance. I guarantee who ever you are fighting will be much easier to handle while they're trying to catch themselves from falling.:)
