karatekid1975 Posted October 16, 2003 Posted October 16, 2003 krunchyfrogg, good point. I'll do the search again, and give you what I find. Is any school within 10 miles ideal? There are a lot to choose from in that area (within 10 miles, that is). Let me know Laurie F

karatekid1975 Posted October 16, 2003 Posted October 16, 2003 Ok, here's what I came up with Schools with websites: Livingston (approx. 8 miles from Parsippany): http://www.njkarate.com/ (Kempo) http://www.karatenj.com/welcome.htm (Tae Kwon Do) http://www.imafit.com/ (Eskrima, Jeet Kune Do, BJJ) http://www.martialartsnj.com/ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) Morristown (approx. 7 miles): http://www.aikidocenters.com/ (Aikido) http://www.mullins-shaolin.com/ (Shao-Lin Kung Fu) Fairfield (appox. 8 miles): http://www.ultimatedragonkarate.com/start.htm (Shorin Ryu) http://www.teamhsk.org/ (sport karate) And there's a lot more without websites I'll give ya a chance to look these over, then I'll post the others Laurie F
krunchyfrogg Posted October 19, 2003 Author Posted October 19, 2003 What style of ShorinRyu? Matsubayashi, Kobiyashi or Shobiyashi *sp* Not sure. As my profile says, it's a combination of 3 styles. I don't know what parts of each style are incorporated. krunchyfrogg Posted October 24, 2003 Author Posted October 24, 2003 That list is very impressive, KK'75. And there's a lot more without websites I'll give ya a chance to look these over, then I'll post the others How about it? mArTiAl_GiRl Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 I had the same problem. I moved from Sweden to Estonia and I had to find a new Dojo. I didn't know what to choose, so I asked my Sensei in Sweden what he thinks and he said: "The style is not important, important is who is the Sensei". And I went to many different Dojo's, talked with different Sensei's and chose the club were the best Sensei was. My mom and dad looked at his rank, but for me what mattered, was the Sensei's personality and how much he reminded me of my swedish Sensei. I guess I just missed Sweden. Anyway, I made a choice, and two years later, I realized how much weaker I've become. And I changed Dojo again, and this time, I looked for a Sensei who really cares for her/his disciples. I found one who cares more than others, who really takes that time to teach a disciple individually. I'm stronger now and much better, but not as good as I was in Sweden... Kill is love
telsun Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 Some wise words there from martialgirl. If you have not been studying long then you will probably find that you can slip into another karate class fine. Go into JJ or something then you may feel a little uncomfortable. Just check out the local clubs, find the best instructor, teaching the best art (in your opinion). You'll know when you walked into the right dojo. Good luck. I keep asking God what I'm for and he tells me........."gee I'm not sure!"
mArTiAl_GiRl Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 that was nice of you. thank you. and.. i guess you're right. Kill is love
krunchyfrogg Posted October 24, 2003 Author Posted October 24, 2003 (edited) I e-mailed that first link you put up in Fairfield, and things look pretty good. I only have to go off of their website and the e-mail response I got from the Sensei there, but the response was very good, and the website makes it look like it could be a decent school. I don't know about the cost or anything like that yet (contract status, ect.), but I did get a free week's pass there, which helps a lot.
