shotokanwarrior Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 I was wondering that when you spar have you ever timed your attack and struck when the other guy is breathing in. My sensei told me to watch for that because it is a good time to attack. Does anyone know why? Where Art ends, nature begins.
Goju1 Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 Yes this is good training! One's Ki or power is weaker when breathing in. This is why breathing katas like Sanchin are so important - you learn to breathe powerfully without showing it. Try this in sparring, don't show your breathing (another reason to be in good shape) and attack on their inhalation.
JerryLove Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 Try punching a bag while taking sharp inhales... then try it with sharp exhales... now tell me why you'd want to catch your opponent on an inhale? https://www.clearsilat.com
Treebranch Posted October 7, 2003 Posted October 7, 2003 I think it's great if you can pull it off, but I'd be more concerned with my own breathing. Having proper breathing helps and it is important, but for the most part the power comes from your structure and movement. The Sanchin is more than just breathing. JerryLove Posted October 8, 2003 Posted October 8, 2003 Agreed. If you actually have time to think about their breathing (as in: watch it and consider it), then it's an odd fight. https://www.clearsilat.com
