Grappling art for a tall, thin guy.

Recommended Posts

Are there any throwing/grappling arts that particularly lend themselves to someone 6'0", roughly 160 lbs, very thin frame, but strong for my weight? Will I get destroyed in Judo because of my high centre of gravity?

EDIT: Fixed a typo

I used to do Judo when I was younger, and was similar height and weight to yourself. I struggled with throwing somewhat, but relying on sacrifice throws helped me overcome that to an extent. In groundwork, I don't think my extra height gave me any disadvantage however.

I've now filled out a bit (195lb) and do Ju Jitsu, where I've not found any problem because of my height. So a groundwork/takedown art would probably be fine - BJJ, Vale Tudo, traditional Ju Jitsu etc.

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.

Thanks...I guess it might just make me work harder eh?

As a follow-up question, does anyone know of any good grappling schools in Toronto, Ontario?

BJJ definately. There are many tall skinny world-champions in BJJ e.g. Comprido, Roleta, Royce Gracie etc.

Sounds good. Just make sure it's not another TMA bashing cult. Some of these BJJ schools have turned into superiority complex cult gatherings instead of respectable martial arts schools. Just make sure they teach you to respect your opponent regardless of style. Other then that I highly recommend BJJ. You can't lose with Judo either.

Tapped out, knocked out, or choked out...Take your pick.

Which style would be better for take-down defense, BJJ, or Judo or TJJ?

My main style is karate, so ensuring that I can use my karate will be important to me.

You know, I haven't met too many guys who bash TMA's. Sometimes it happens, but the guys doing the bashing have all trained in those arts anyway -e.g. sometimes I'll bash TKD, but I've also got a black belt in it and feel qualified to pass comment.

As far as Judo, all the BJJ people I've met have great respect for Judo players and would love to learn more throws.

WAGGNEY FABIANO, HES IN SCARBOROUGH, HES A WORLD CLASS , BJJ BLACKBELT, FIGHTING FROM NOVA UNIAO, his academy is called karma martial arts

I checked it out, it looks like the club is in Woodbridge, not Scarborough. I might look into it, but it's pretty out of the way for me because I live in Markham and go to school downtown.

He does sound like a more qualified teacher than the ones at the place I found on Queen Street though.
