I hear and see alot of the crane style kung fu in Karate and I know goju and certian shorin styles have a big hakutsuru/crane base. To what extent do you as kung fu students see the crane style in karate? Many karateka say it is the most deadly style of kung fu, what are your thoughts?

Well i can't answer how i see crane used in karate because i have'nt seen it used in karate.I don't think it's the deadliest of the animals either in my own thoughts.I would say snake, tiger, and monkey are some of the most deadly.I like the crane though although tiger and monkey are my two favorite animals.

White Crane is very deadly, as is snake, and dragon forms beacuse of thier fluid unpredictable movements.

the reason you see a lot of crane in karate is b/c crane kung-fu was a influence in Okinawa.

im not sure on the truth of this and i am not trying to say this is right but many believe karate was based on or highly influenced by the crane style.

The Southern White Crane style was a major influence on the Okinawan styles, especially Shuri Te. The Hakutsuru kata or White Crane kata supposedly comes directly from the Southern White Crane system. I have not researched personally the validity of that statement.

To be honest, as an instructor of Fujian White Crane I see very little evidence of true White Crane in Karate including the Matsumura and Goju styles. As for "Hakutsuru" I see little evidence of true Fujian White crane within that which is passed off as being Hakutsuru!

I train in Hakutsuru I don't know much about what Chinse white crane do. I know of the concepts are crane concepts even though movements are more like a mixed of karate and crane in one movement I seen certain hand postions and such. But mostly they look to be diffrent.

As for Hakutsuru there is a lot of good concepts with in the white crane system. One of hte best instructors I found who teaches that is Tony Sandoval. Here is link to him if you want to check out what he teaches so to speka. You would have to e-mail him to get a better idea though.

Me I can careless if some one does true taekwondo, true white crane, true Kenpo or what ever. If they instructor is good and the concepts he teaches are good. Fine by me. For the instructor I have I get shot gun blasted with a lot of concepts and good ideas. The whole are and way of teaching stuff is based on getting across ideas and points. In each form there are ideas that come with it and other forms that have main indeas in it can tranfer the same Ideas into your previous forms. alot of good stuff.

Jeff,

Please read what I wrote, I stated that I see very little real Fujian White Crane (the mother art of all Crane-Fist) in that passed off as being "Hakutsuru".

I have studied Tsuruken (Crane-Fist) on Okinawa and am now linked to the Fujian White Crane of Taiwan and I stand by my statement.

Of all the instructors of Hakutsuru "out there" Mr. Sandoval is the most accurate and has my respect. However, Fujian White Crane is very different in its forms and applications.

Ron,

We had few conversations before in the past. I dobut you remember me. But I respect your opinion and see were you are coming from. I havenn't studied Fujian White Crane so I can't commment on the diffrence between Hakutsuru and Fujian white Crane. I was saying I like concepts of Hakutsuru and to me has crane concepts in it. How it relates to the White crane style you are practing well I can't give an opinion on that.

Only opinion I can give is I enjoy Hakutsuru and Mr. Sandoval is an excellent teacher with regards to concept and theory and application training.

Thank you for your comments though Ron.

I have always enjoyed are conversations.
