Treebranch
Does anyone here know what Airsoft Guns are? They are basically BB Guns that look like real guns and often act like real guns. The nicer ones from Japan have the same features and characteristics of a real gun. For example, I have a Desert Eagle and a Beretta Pietro, one by Tokyo Murai and the other by Western Arms. They are awesome. We are starting to incorporate them into our training. What do you guys think about using these guns for tacticle training and defenses against guns? Martial_Artist
Pretty nice toys. Much cheaper than using real guns with simmunitions and better than using rubber replicas. At least you can get "shot" with the plastic BB and know whether you just performed a technique properly. Even though the BB moves much slower than a bullet it is the reflexes of the shooter you are ultimately trying to defeat. Treebranch
Have you seen these guns, they're very cool. They have almost any gun you can think of. Some come in 90% metal with 10% plastic which feel like the real thing. Just don't carry these things around in public. You'll scare the hell out of someone or a cop may shoot you. Martial_Artist
I use to buy them in when I lived in the Philippines. I brought some back to the US. They're fun for sure. Here in the US, though, you're right, be careful or you'll end up getting shot or being mistaken for a gun-totin' thug. Warp Spider
They're neat, but if it's for training disarms make sure you get a gas one or (if you're thrifty) a spring powered one. The electric blowback pistols and automatic electric guns have a slight delay between the trigger pull and the actual firing. Paladin - A holy beat down in the name of God! Treebranch
Just look up Airsoft Guns on Google, I'm sure you can find oline stores. Ebay has some as well. Make sure you get the Japanese ones, I don't recommend the Chinese ones. Warp Spider
Don't buy an airsoft gun on eBay! The guns there are usually very low quality. If you live in a country where airsoft guns are legal, https://www.redwolfairsoft.com is very inexpensive and has a variety of products from different manufacturers. Their customer service is kind of lousy though... In some countries, airsoft guns are "sort of" legal - technically they're a BB gun, so you're allowed to have them, but that doesn't mean the police won't confiscate it from you anyway because of the resemblance. In those countries you can usually get them imported under the auspices of a movie prop - but sometimes you need a special license to do so. And like Treebranch said - avoid buying guns made in Taiwan. As you may know, there is no copyright law in Taiwan and they make a lot of cheap knockoffs there. Ideally you should get a gun made in either Japan, or Hong Kong. Alternatively, if you live in the US or Canada, Daisy and Crossman make some kind of low quality spring pistols for airsoft. They're not that good of quality, but they're only about $15 US from what I've heard. EDIT: I almost forgot: if you're using a real gun with simunitions or an airsoft gun, always wear eye protection and a mouthguard. Airsoft guns aren't that powerful but can definately take out an eye, especially at close ranges. In fact, I'd almost recommend getting one of the crappy crossman or daisy airsoft guns. They really aren't meant to be used a close range, and a good one can put a BB through a cheek and into your mouth, or through a lip and still have enough energy to chip a tooth. AnonymousCoward
In the UK, where handguns are illegal except for police use, it is common for people to buy airsoft guns and bore them out to make cheap "saturday night special" type guns. It has been raised in the UK parliament. http://www.parliament.the-stationery-office.co.uk/pa/cm199900/cmselect/cmhaff/95/95ap05.htm "A recent innovation has been the conversion of low powered air pistols to fire live ammunition. This relates to the legally available .22 calibre revolvers manufactured by Brocock and involves converting the "Air Cartridge System" to chamber live ammunition. The "air cartridges" can easily be replaced with a similar shaped metal insert that allows a live .22 or .25 calibre bullet to be chambered in the cylinder and then fired with lethal force." I think a couple of people were shot with these last weekend in Liverpool. There were no details about the type of weapon used except that it was a low calibre handgun and the injuries were not fatal (due to bad marksmanship I think), so I'm presuming that it was one of these. The UK has a big market for deactivated weapons re-activations. A Police officer I know said that they catch a lot of people with illegal firearms when they turn up in hospital after their weapons have exploded during test fires. I've had a few airsoft guns when I was younger...
Warp Spider
That is a complete and total myth. I don't know why people keep bringing that up. You would have to replace the entire internal reciever with a reciever from a real gun, as well as replacing the barrel, because a 6mm brass barrel will not stand up to the pressures from real bullets, not even a .22 caliber. They may be referring to regular air guns. Airsoft guns do not have an "air chamber," unless you're talking about the cylinder, but the piston at the end of the cylinder is made of abs plastic and would definately not stand up to a .22 caliber round. Further, the trigger system is COMPLETELY different from anything you would find on a real gun. You would get better results by putting the bullet in a small piece of drain pipe and heating it with a blowtorch until it went off. Having said that, in Hong Kong the style of play is very much geared towards high-powered guns. You can upgrade an airsoft gun to be fairly hazardous, but that usually costs well over a thousand dollars. Paladin - A holy beat down in the name of God!
