a movie can not be just for entertainment because that goal alone is not enough to make the creators (actors, composers, directors, editors) have the will power required to make a film. Its a physically, mentally, and emmotionally painful process.

but that doesn't answer why it can't be just entertainment.

long kiss goodnight is an entertaining film.

it didn't set out to have any deep meaning.

true lies is an entertaining film that didn't have a deep meaning.

the usual suspects is an entertaining film that doesn't have any deep meaning.

the matrix is an entertaining film that doesn't have any real deep meaning.

there is sometimes an idea behind the film but then that's just a device with which the film is spun around.

the idea is just the tool with which the director holds his film together with, his desire to make it entertaining.

though i admire all most all movies, right down to the mystery science theater class ones, for the amount of work and effort put into them, it is still possible to sit down and just pure and simple enjoy it. i could sit down and stare at a bag of cat food, and ponder all of the love, care, effort, and plain work that went into it, or i could just give it to my cat and let her enjoy it. personally, i prefer the latter :) though i enjoyed kill bill, and definitely appreciate the amount of effort, time, work, research, emotion, etc. put into it, i certainly enjoyed the movie as a whole more than the "animal instinct" meaning behind it. i see it as more of an homage, personally.

prove to me that True Lies, the Matrix, and The Long Kiss Good Night (movies i also liked) has no basis, no symbols, and no meaning, and i will prove you wrong. this does not mean you can't sit and just enjoy the film if you want. Certainly there are films PRODUCED simply for entertainment, but none are MADE simply for entertainment. As they say in my own field "You write for love, you publish for money." I personnaly like looking for the reasons the director wanted to make THIS film, and more importantly, because they never get enough credit, why the screen wite wanted to write it.

yes but like i said before, any deep meanings and symbols, you probably associated to the film yourself.

I'd have to agree with that mostly. Sometimes a writer is writing for a specific purpose (other than entertainement, such as the book Animal Farm. (I know it's not a movie, but still a similar concept) The vast majority though don't have any real meaning.

The only one of those movies listed that I've seen is the Matrix, and although the notion may seem "deep" to some, it is completely absurd when you look at it from an informed standpoint. I can't speak on those other movies because I haven't seen them.

well, taht is the difference between a writer and a screen writer.

a writer creates for the story.

a screen writer creates for the screen.

that's why a great deal of good books can't be filmed or when they do, it is a horribly bastardised version.

Fact is there are serious films and fun films. Kill Bill was a fun film. There are films with deep symbolism and films that are meant to provoke us through shock. Kill Bill is the latter. I would say that Tarantino is a good director, great is a matter of opinion I guess. It might get an Oscar for something. It will not get best film or best director, or best actor. I'll bet money on that.
