Kendo, iaido or fencing?

Recommended Posts

Since my Muay Thai instructor left, and this will be the second martial that ive stopped doing, i though id like tried to try something different. Once my gym membership runs my parents say i can take another martial art and i think that i would like to take a sword art. These are the 3 sword arts that are taught in my city, and i was wondering if you guys could tell me a bit about each and what they are like and which one would be the best/most fun/coolest to take.

Also which practictioner would be most likely to win in a fight?

I'd take Kendo :D I've heard that its hard but the sparring with the bamboo swords would be worth it. I wish there was Kendo where I live :bawling:

Not sure about iado.

Fencing is pretty popular. I think its where the two people wear white and use the Zoro looking swords.

And the one that would win the fight would be the one that actually carries a sword around

Iaido is very good. Kendo is good if the instructor teaches Kenjutsu as well. Kendo would probably be the most fun.

oooooooooo, i really wanna take a sword art too :) we learn the sword in my school, but i have to get a bit farther in my training; i'm working with the staff now. kendo looks fun, but it also looks EXPENSIVE. none of that equipment looks cheap, + tuition. but it seems like it would be well worth it if you could find cheap armour.

on the other hand, iaido looks very very pretty and graceful, effective, and everyone i've seen do it seems relaxed and at peace. it's pleasant just to watch them :) and you get to wear those neat hakama pants :P

i was never one for fencing myself, but it looks to me that all they really do is poke, which would just seem really annoying to me. i don't know, it dosen't look so fun to me, but that's just me.

well ive taken fencing, and kendo, and hopeing about starting aikibudo soon(similar to iaido).

fencing, i dont know, its ok, but not as fun as kendo, fencing is kinda to controled, where you can hit, how you can stand all that. kendo is much more active and full out. though it is more expensive.

id go with kendo, but if thats to expensive then iaido !

There are 3 weapons in fencing - epée. foil and sabre. Epée is not "too controlled", basically the rules are that you have to hit the other person anywhere on their body before they hit you.... (The other two weapons have more in depth rules, but I've avoided those).

Epée is really good fun - I can't compare it fairly to Kendo or Iaido as I've not studied them.

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
