integrating martial arts into sports

Recommended Posts

I'm only a green belt in traditional shotokan karate, for a long time now i've wanted to learn how to integrate my martial arts knowledge into basketball and volleyball. does anyone here know of any way i can use various martial arts exercises to increase my speed, and strength in basketball especially in my jumping ability, defense, and ball handling.

any feedback is appreciated.

thank you very much

Unless you plan to kick the hell out of a basketball, forget it, unless they allow kicks in the regular game, just use the strengthening and endurance training you get in martial arts to enhance the others

A Black Belt is just a white belt that don't know when to quit!

well, outside of the martial arts, the only other sports i do are track and cross country. the extra flexibility in my legs gave me a better stride length plus i had more power in my legs, which helped exponentally, plus the extra exercise built up my core (torso) a lot better, helping my running form a lot. i didn't train specifically for those purposes, it just sort of happened naturally, as i'm sure any other cross overs would.

Most of the exercises/stretching you do in MA will help out your reaction times and energy bursts in other sports. Keep doing what you're doing.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world.

If you are interested in overall general athletic improvement I would suggest checking out "functional training". Functional training is a method of body conditioning that improves your performance in sports as well as everyday activities. A new book was just released on this very subject titled "Functional Training for Sports" by Michael Boyle.

In general, training in martial arts will make you better in martial arts, running will make you better at running, etc. In order to improve in a specific area of sports you have to train in a way that replicates the movements used while building those attributes that you desire such as speed, agility, strength, etc.

The flexibility you gain from MA will help with everything. Also you learn to have a strong perserverence, which means you will keep going when others give in.

It may not be on topic but I've found that the reverse is true also your other sports can help you with Martial Arts. Take a look at those people who begin MA with no athletic background and see how differently they move. They are very stiff and machine like, and run out of gas very quickly. I've found that my background in football has conditioned me to withstand hits(pain) a lot better than most. Also basketball has given me a jumping and overall coordination advantage over most.

Stay active as much as possible and you should be successful in all these things.

they played trumpets to warn you that I was coming.

Having seen my kids and their friends grow up in the martial arts I think work ethics (perseverance, respect, etc.) and body awareness are two important things that martial arts has given them.
