cymry Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 So would I be right in saying that Pankration is a style that advocates striking over grappling: more punching than kicking, and lots of close range striking. When they grapple it's usually limb destructions, strangles, or injurous takedowns, techniques that keep them standing. If the fight does go to the ground, they will try to finish it off by striking before going into a grappling hold if need be. (Although they are good at both. )
cymry Posted October 18, 2003 Posted October 18, 2003 Does anyone know of Pankration classes or seminars in the UK, preferably North West England/Norh East Wales, or in and around Dublin, Ireland.
martialartsresearcher Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 pankration started in 648 b.c. in the greek olympic games, and its a lot like MMAs.
TomanGaidin Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 Keep in mind that modern day Pankration, as taught, is probably (guessing, here) more akin to a mixture of Muay Thai and BJJ than 'authentic' Pankration as it was all those years ago.
cymry Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 BJJ - take the guy to the ground. Pankration - finish it standing up or make sure only he goes down. BJJ - grappling over striking. Pankration - striking over grappling.
cymry Posted October 30, 2003 Posted October 30, 2003 I would say that Pankration is a mix of boxing, ju-jitsu and Greco-Roman wrestling. There are some kicks but not that many.
