Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum but while I was searching the net for an answer to the question I'm trying to answer I stumbled on this site and noticed that a lot of ppl here know what they're talking about.

When I was younger an unckle of mine once made my nephew black out in a matter of seconds without hurting him or anything, he just blacked out and woke up again a few minutes later, asking my unckle to do it again lol.

He did this by doing something in the area around his neck which can't have taken a lot of force since then he would have hurt my nephew.

About a week ago we were talking about this event (my unckle died and we were talking about what he was like and the time we had spent together with him, hadn't thought about it for years) and I became intrigued by it so I started my search.

Now, I have found some stuff about a thing called the sleeper hold, where you block off the 2 carotid arteries in the side of the neck, causing a temporary black out. However, I'm pretty certain that my unckle didn't use that since he didn't put my nephew in a head-lock and he used only 1 hand...

Could anybody here please explain to me how this is done exactly and what's the principle behind it? It would be very much appreciated since I have been searching fot the answer for days and haven't found it.

Thx in advance,

Christophe

From what you have described, I'd say that it was indeed a carotid restraint hold. It's is the only way I know of to put someone out without causing any unnecessary harm. However, your uncle must have had massive size hands, or yur nephew a skinny neck to be put out with one hand  .

Usually when applying the carotid, you use the bicep part or your arm along one side of the carotid, and the forearm on the otherside without placing any pressure along the front of the throat. With even the minimal amount of pressure you can make someone go to sleep :brow: .

It's worth mentioning that some people have slightly different anatomy that makes that technique ineffective. Or so I've heard. Plus I'm pretty sure I have that too, on account of the RNC just makes my voice go all funny and eventually starts to suffocate me.

Was he pinching from the front or back? I have heard of a one handed carotid pinch being done, but as Pacific said, he would have to have large hand to reach both.

Did your uncle have pointy ears and come from the planet Vulcan by any chance? :-P

From the front.

I guess he could have reached both with one hand yes, since my nephew was a lot younger/smaller at the time.

I found the carotid arteries, but what do you have to do then? (only using your hand like my uncle used to)

Also, how long would it normally take? I think it wasn't more than 10 seconds although that seems a bit too long I'm pretty sure it happened faster but it's a little blurry since it was such a long time ago.

How long would the person normally stay unconsious? My nephew was back on his feet in a minute or so I think as far as I can tell.

Btw, does anybody know the name of this technique?

Btw, somebody told me that she had seen something like it on tv but that it wasn't the thing I was talking about since the guy who did it did something to the shoulder of his victim.

Anybody know what that one is about?

I also found an article on a police officer once using the technique on a protester and getting fired because of it.

Btw, could I try it on myself as well? (I'd rather hurt mysself in trying to understand it than somebody else)

You only need to stop the blood going in or going out. Both is obviously better though. Perhaps your uncle was doing what is known by doctors as a Carotid sinus massage.

“Carotid sinus massage involves rubbing the large part of the arterial wall at the point where the common carotid artery, located in the neck, divides into its two main branches. Rubbing the carotid sinus stimulates an area in the artery wall that contains nerve endings. These nerves respond to changes in blood pressure and are capable of slowing the heart rate. “

Please note “Massage in a blocked area might cause a clot to break loose and cause a stroke

So don’t try this on your friends!

I know you guys are going to think I'm crazy (either for doing it or admitting it) but I just took my middle finger and my thumb, found both carotid arterys and applied a modest amount of pressure for about 2-3 seconds. Boy did I get very, very woozy. I WON'T be doing it again. Especially after reading the warning about JohnnyS about the potential for a stroke.
